"My Xbox 360 Died and I Lived to tell the story" Official Thread

Except there's still no proof it helps anything. New 360s run pretty cool anyway so you're really wasting your time with these things.

Besides that, it's not heat that kills 360s (as anyone that has failed to towel one to death can tell you), it's thermal expansion / contraction of the motherboard.

It does help...

You're still missing the point... lower temps don't necessarily keep 360s alive longer (which is why we've seen a bunch of people with dead 360s even though they used fan addons etc).

Plus, you're adding more noise, plus, as I said in the last post - new models run a ton cooler than the old models anyway.

So.... What do I do? I see 65nm Flacons here getting RRoD... Should I just pray that it won't die?

You've seen 4 falcons getting RRoD in 10 months on the market. If that sort of failure rate panics you, don't buy anything, ever.

My launch unit got RROD #2 on it 3 days ago.

It last broke down on me January '07 and they sent back my original unit from repair.

I got Forza 2 the other day and it died on me right after I installed the mandatory Forza 2 patch. I got error code E71 with one red light in the lower right corner. I rebooted it several times and then started getting the 3 RROD. I tried all the hints out there for error code E71, but then I started getting an E79 error code, and now I get nothing at all but 3 RROD so its good and fucked.

I'm seriously thinking about ditching this damn thing when I get it back from repair. This sucks so bad because I've already invested a lot of money in the system with games, Rock Band, Arcade titles. I was so close to buying Rock Band for my PS3 a few months ago and now I wish that I had. Guess I'll be getting Madden on the PS3 as well. Fucking Microsoft. Way to fuck yourselves.

Come on now, If there's only been four falcons die in ten months It would be extremely more reliable than the PS3 then. Where are these numbers at?

My 2nd xbox broke with the e74 error within a months time... talk about depressing.

Seems this xbox is no longer under warranty and they want me to pay 99$ for repair.

How does their service work? Do they just fix it and send it back, or do they replace the unit like they do when the system is under warranty? Also how long does it usually take?

I think they just send you a refurb. Microsoft are experts at this already so you wont be waiting too long.

Numbers are all in this thread (that's the number for RRoD falcons btw). Monthly stats will be updated on the 10th as they always are.

Well blow me, my launch unit has finally died by the looks of it after all this time of being solid as a rock.

The video output seems to have gone, was working an hour ago while I played geowars 2 but now the tv just doesn't detect the 360 video. I tried it on another tv using the same scart socket the cable box uses but it can't see anything. normally I use component on a hdtv and yes I did doublecheck to make sure the switch was set to HDTV or TV.

I'll have to test the box out at my cousins this week or something to see if it's only the cable that is dead and not the xbox, but what a kick to the nuts after topping up MS points and getting prepared for geowars 2 and castle crashers...

If the box is dead no way i'm paying Microsoft to fix it, i'm true to my word when I said years ago I would sell it as scrap and move on.

Ok, here's what happened. About 10 minutes after i started playing Bioshock, weird lines on green points appeared on my screen. So I turned off my console, waited 5 minutes, turned it on again and there was that fucking warning screen. Only one red light (bottom right one). Error code: E74.

I searched and found that it might be my disk drive. Nop. Tried without it and it still doesn't work. Read that I should unplug everything, wait a bit, and try again. Still one fucking red light.

Now I just called Microsoft support center, and the one red light problem isn't covered by the guarantee. And it would cost me a whopping 124 $ to repair it. WTF.

Is there anyway to...you know, 'force' your console to give you three red lights ? 124$ to get a refurbished console that will break any day, no thanks.

Next-gen winter.

For some reason my DVD drive doesn't want to always open. I have to jiggle the plastic on the front in order to get it to open sometimes. This is my 5th 360. WHAT THE FUCK.

You don't need to force anything. Just tell them you got 3RL. And don't worry about refurbished, they are all now Falcon mboards withou HDMI (Opus)

Psychotext said:
Really? I know some people are getting them but I didn't know that it was all they were sending out these days.

Yea the 360 that they sent me was an opus and it was manufactured on May of this Year. Pretty fucking good.

You sure? A lot of people get confused with the date on refurb consoles... it can also mean refurbished date.

Though if they send you a new PSU you'll know for sure. :D

I assume you're talking about the lack of HDMI... they're replacements for the original non HDMI 360s (because if they start handing out HDMI replacements they'll be dealing with a hundred thousand murdered 360s a week).

Ah, ok! I was confused -- I thought those boards were for everyone.

Still using my 360 w/HDMI from September of last year! First game I played on it was Dead Rising which apparently makes the console run warmer than usual, heh.

If my 360 ever dies on me, I hope it's when MS releases a smaller, significantly cooler running version of the console :D

what shitty hardware the 360 is!! Holy!! I see people with 4,5,6 360's, how can you put up with that shit?!

I had 2 die and I still want another one bad, I am just waiting till I know for sure it is a Jasper to buy.

No yea, They also sent me a new PSU. That's why i wondered why the box they shipped back was 11 lbs...

It does help...

It lowers temps but it also shares power from the 360 itself. This is bad. When a device is designed with careful power requirements a brown out or short would fuck your 360 and your intercooler. Intercooler and the like just prey on the fear that the 360 failures have generated. The Falcons are so much more stable it's not even funny. If we just posted Falcon only failures you'd probably see about the same as the PS3 failure posts. The Jasper chipset is out very soon, and past that.. the single CPU/GPU Valhalla. The 360's major failures are behind it.

If your this worried Naruto, you best not even buy one. It's just going to burn a hole in your gut worrying about it.

The Intercooler and any clone of it should be forced off of the shelves, honestly. It's a hazard. Anything that can potentially (and if it happens, so visibly, btw) fry your system like that is bad.

Not safe.

Mine started out with 1 red light and E71 error. Took the hard drive off, turned it on - 3 Red Lights. Attached the hard drive again, turned it on - 1 red light and error code E74. Repeated all these steps one more time and now I get nothing but 3 red rings consistently. No more error codes or anything. Its like the thing finally just said 'fuck-it, I'm dead'. I've probably turned it on 30 times in the last 2 days and its 3 RROD every single time.

The Intercooler TS which comes out on September, doesn't share power from the 360.
I know that the first Intercooler killed consoled and everybody freaked out, but the EX fixed that, and the TS should fix all problems.

I want to give a new update. I found out from so coworkers that there was a very slight power outage the night my 360 red ringed to a blank screen. They said it flickered so fast that it was like someone flipped the switch up and down within a second. I think that is why my falcon got a red ring.

I decided to not return it to the store and press on with it...

Sorry to scare some of you guys with some falcon related news...

Ohh that's great news then. Yeah power issues sometimes give 360 a red ring. If the power is flinky at times , is getting a UPS useful?

You know, the best solution is to use a normal fan and blow it directly on the left side of the console (when placed vertically). I wouldn't dare to use the intercooler, but if you think it will help, just go try it out and let us know it went.

Dropping my 360 off today at a UPS center to ship it back.

When should I expect it back in my hands again? What's the usual turn-around time these days?

Quoting myself. I sent it in 7/30/08 and today (8/4/08) the Xbox support website updated and says that it's being shipped back. I hope to get it back by the end of the week.

Anyone know if I can call UPS and have them hold it at a pick-up center? I won't be at my house during their usual drop-off times and I don't want to wait 3 attempts to go to pick it up. :(

Yup, it's three years from the date of purchase, but solely for the 3 red rings problem (as far as I know, anyway). I just registered mine for a repair and shipped it off for fixin' today, funny thing is my UPS store didn't even charge me for shipping, so all in all the entire thing didn't cost me a cent.

Oh, and the usual waiting time is 2-3 weeks from the day you send it them, for those who were asking.

Whats the word on Best Buy extended warranties? Would it be recommended to purchase one? (60 dollars) Or, would the MS 3 Year Warranty be sufficient for any eventual issues? Is it worth it?

I don't want to waste 60 dollars on something that's not much different than what MS will do for free.

If anyone can point to a resource, thread, or explain themselves how you increase the likeliness of getting a falcon (Serial, Wattage hoopla), I'd appreciate it!

Do you want to wait 1 month + to get your 360 back, or have a new one right away? My 360 has already had 2+ months of downtime this year. I WISH for once that I bought the warranty.

You don't need a new PSU for new motherboards. Old ones had more capacity so they can also power the new mboards with less watts. It's the new PSUs that don't work with old (Xenon) boards.

Different plugs on certain versions. They send you a new one because they can't tell what you have.

Just so everyone knows, if you get a RROD you are still under warranty. There are no 360s that are out of warranty yet for the 3 red lights failure because the warranty is 3 years and the 360 was released in November 2005. At the earliest, people who bought a launch 360 will run out of warranty in November.

To be more precise, November 22nd, 2008. Provided you still have a functioning launch day console, your safety net will run out then.

I just can't wait for the shitstorm for every out of warranty dead 360 that turns up after that date. Then again, if my machine had lasted 3 years without issues I'd probably be fairly pleased with it compared to a lot of other people's! :lol

I was just making sure because since launch I've had 5-7 consoles sent back due to the 3 lights :lol Finally got sick of it and fixed the last one using the xclamp crap and bought a new arcade unit this xmas..These last two are still working..for now.

Ok I just noticed that there's a few graphics artifacts (to be specific, stretched polygons) popping left and right in the main menu and in several games except SC4, but the games are still playable and the console seems alright except these artifacts.

Any gaffer had the same problem before? Is it a GPU failure or simply a power issue?

Psychotext said:
Yeah, that's a symptom of a dying GPU. The bad news is that it can take forever to finally die.
Man that is killing me. It's not a RROD issue (yet) and I ran out of the normal warranty. Is there some way to make MS fix the shit for me?
