Shit mine just red ringed after playing BC for 10 min. Never had a problem till then. Only had my elite for 13 months now

My 360 (9/17/2006 manufacture date) finally got 3 red rings yesterday while playing a demo. They're going to give me a free repair, hope it comes back with HDMI. :D

It won't happen. They'll put an Opus motherboard in the case you send back to them. Its a Falcon motherboard tooled to fit inside the older cases so it doesn't have HDMI.

my 360 isnt dead yet, but I have an elite which I bought 14 months ago, so the 1 year warranty is a no go and I gotta pay $100 to fix the issue, and pretty much, I can play a game for about 10mins, then the game crashes and says unplayable disc, then whenever I try loading a disc, it still says unplayable disc, I try again the next day, works for 10mins, etc etc...I tried looking on google, cant find anything, you guys have any suggestions?

My 360 is fine *knock on wood* but my girlfriend's is another story. It never actually red ringed, but the disc drive stopped working. So while she could run the 360 and play arcade games and all of that, she couldn't run any actual retail games, so she sent it in. So yesterday it comes back, she's happy, finally gets to play the copy of The Orange Box she's been sitting on for a month.

Unfortunately it then turns out that the open disc tray button will not work. She can still open it using the option on the dashboard though, so it's only the button that's busted, not the mechanism, so we figure whatever, we'll just get a 360 remote and that'll take care of the problem just fine. No need to go through a few more weeks of repair processes.

But then while we were just playing Halo a day later, after a few matches the fan is roaring louder than her old one ever got, and soon enough the console has shut itself down to over heating. We get back on, but within a few minutes it's off again, and now it's at the point where it shuts itself off pretty much immediately after being turned on.

I'm fine with having to deal with the occasional broken 360 and having to send it in, but sending one back that's already broken is just annoying. Way to go, MS.

Is the UPS going to come pick it up at my house? It's been two days since I called MS.
Can someone please answer this question. It's been a week now. Trying to request a pickup online UPS tries to charge me $11.

You're suppose to drop it off at an local ups store if you don't want to be charged.

Since you seem so excited about it.

My December '05 360 finally gave me the three red rings a night or two ago.

Are you required to send the harddrive with the system? What would happen if I kept that here and sent it without it?

It had been giving me problems for a few months, but nothing that affected gameplay. Just weird noises and that sort of thing.

Were you playing the Bionic Commando demo by any chance?

Do not send the hardrive. Take off any accessories and just send the system bare.

I don't remember what I was doing. I was either playing the BC demo or trying to boot up COD4 for my nephew to play it. Either way, I'm pretty sure I was doing one or the other first, then doing the second one when it happened.

Alright, I'll send it in bare.

My 360 RROD'ed back on August 8th... Bit the bullet and replaced it today (I was out of town all week). But you know, my friend's just died too and we both noticed two common factors...

- Our 360's were 20GB models
- They RROD'ed the next time we powered them on after the latest update

I wonder if there was something fucked with the firmware update like what happened with the 2.40 update for PS3's.

same shit happened to me!

Well, my original December 2005 360 finally Red Ringed tonight. I was trying to play Halo 3 when suddenly the system hard freezed. Rebooted it. Hard freeze again within 2-3 minutes. It did this 2 more times before finally giving the Red Ring and not booting. I've already ordered a coffin from the website.

Fortunately, I have a Falcon spare at my parents house. The Falcon was supposed to be used at my house but for some reason I can only rarely get both systems connected to Live at the same time, so I left the second one at my parents house. Too bad. Almost got 3 years out of a 2005 unit!!
Got a June 2008 refurbished unit as a replacement, seems to run just as well as the original 2005 model. I'm guessing it's one of those Opus boards. And I got it back within a week of shipment! Overall a pleasent experience for a crappy situation.

Had my Elite (purchased June '07) hooked up in my apartment for almost 9 mos without a problem and then I moved out on August 1st, That night, I hooked it up at my new place, used it to play Ninja Gaiden II for about an hour (froze up once) then watched an episode of a tv show via USB memory stick. It was also thunder storming that night, and I didn't have it connected to a surge protector, so I wonder if that had any effect on it. The next morning I turn it on and got the 3 red rings. Called it in, got the shipping label, sent it on a Monday and they received it on Friday the 8th. Got the call from UPS today that I will be receiving it back tomorrow, the 18th. Overall I'm not too miffed. Since I just got it last year, I bought it knowing well enough what could have happened. At least I'll have it back for Too Human and Castle Crashers. And I'll definitely have to try Braid based on all the good things I keep hearing!

My second console just died. One of the Premiums when they first got HDMI (07-01-07 man. date). The checkerboard was popping up for a week and it finally red ringed.

The service website is down so I can't even start the process yet. I tried calling and they said the same thing.

Totally wish I jumped on that first Dell deal because I could have just ebayed these parts like last time.

are they supposed to send a box? they said they were gonna just send me a pre-paid label over email which i haven't gotten. I called 48 hrs ago.

My second 360 died about a week ago. It had been thinking about dying for about 2 months. I would turn it on and it would sit there for like 30 seconds, then red ring. I turn it off, turn it on, turn it off, turn it on. Eventually it would suddenly wake up and work, and would be absolutely fine for as long as I played (leaving it on for over 24 hours too). But, a week and a bit ago it didn't think about starting anymore. It just red ringed as soon as I powered it on.

I have already received my repaired unit. They replaced the DVD drive too with a much quieter one. I'm reasonably happy with how it all went but I tell you what. If it wasn't in warranty, or if for whatever reason I didn't get my system back (lost in the mail for instance). I'd just buy a PS3. I'm not buying another 360.

My second console just died. Got the bottom right side flashing red light and an E74 error message. They want 99 dollars to fix it.

Just went and bought an Arcade concsole for 280 at Walmart. I'll use that till mine comes back from repair. ::supersadface::

I'm sending in my xbox 360 for the 5th time now, just got the RROD this morning.

Should I have talked to a supervisor or something, since this is my 5th time sending the system in?

The first person I talked to seemed concerned that it was my 5th repair, but I was disconnected with him.

The 2nd person I talked to (who completed the repair order) didn't even notice it was my 5th repair on my record and she sounded like a robot.

I want a brand new system after all this, not a fucking repair!

5th 360, sheesh. MS failed this gen, xbox 1 was way more reliable.

I picked mine up this morning from UPS. I took it home, hooked it back up, noticed how loud it was running even w/o a game in the drive.

Anyways, I played Rock Band for a few minutes and it seemed fine. However, I did trade it into Gamestop(boo hiss) and walked out with a wii. At the end of the generation, when the price is down more and the system failures are almost non exsistant, I'll be back. Enjoy Gears 2 and everything else!

Any Euro GAFers in here?

My 360 got delivered to the Service Centre by UPS yesterday morning, but it's yet to change to 'Delivered to Service Centre' on the service.xbox.com status page?

I'm guessing it only gets registered when it's abouts to get fixed?

Well, after getting mine on release day in the UK (2nd December 2005), my beloved machine just RROD. I am so pleased! I really wanted it to pack in before the 3 years were up as I had a feeling it would die.
Just filled out the request form so I'm hoping I'll get a nice new machine.
I've been told that I will get another 3 year warrenty for RROD. Is this true?

Time for me to join the club.

Came home to find the other dreaded error, E74.

Fuck you MS. Fuck you and your shitty hardware.

Un-fucking-real.

Wow, the Germany Repair Centre is awesomely fast!

1) UPS picked up my console on Monday.
2) Got delivered on Wednesday morning.
3) Marked as received on service.xbox.com on Thursday morning.
4) Shipped back Friday morning!

I may have it back within 10 days! Awesomesauce!

Well, the warranty page on service.xbox.com has changed to November 19 2008, which is 3 months from when I requested repair. :(

I sent my 360 off a week ago and i noticed my status never changed at xbox.com as well, but today my 360 was delivered to me out the blue.

They replaced my launch unit with an june 2008 and threw in a free month of Xbox live gold. I was really shocked at how painless this was with all the horror stories Ive heard about returns. I had already upgraded to an elite so im gonna look to sale this one or i may keep it as a back up for a minute :lol

edit: im in USA though.

My roommate's 360 is effectively shot, and it's already been refurbished once. It doesn't have RRoD though; if I wrap it in a towel and leave it on will that Red Ring it? I tried already and it didn't seem to kill it off, but maybe it just takes more time.

Search for "E74".

Basically the scaler chip has come loose and the warranty doesn't cover it. Fantastic.

Man, I'm am fucking PISSED right now and it's only my first 360. I can't imagine going through this more than once. 10 months going great than BAM, 360 is dead.

I am in amazement as to how anybody continues to put up with their 360's dying over and over.

Even though it's my first 360, I'm seriously thinking of getting a PS3 and not looking back. I just do not have the patience to deal with this shit.

FUCK! -_-

As much as I would like to pick up a 360 and never look back, the money I have invested in Rock Band and Guitar Hero keeps dragging me back.

Fuck!

Sorry for the swearing, I'm just really pissed. I have NEVER had a single console break on me. UGH!

My history with the console.

360 #1 - RROD after 8 months
360 #2 - RROD after 6 months
360 #3 - Unit sent by Microsoft was basically dead on arrival, constant DDEs
360 #4 - Unit works, but scratches discs and makes a horrible grinding noise. (same console as #3 ... just "fixed")
360 #5 - Working fine, but mainly because I've only had it for a week :lol. I took advantage of Dell's $350 Elite.

I never thought I'd have the patience to sit through 3 (basically 4) broken consoles in under 2 years. My launch PS2 is still working like the day I bought it. Darn Microsoft's excellent Fall lineup /shakesfist.

about 2 days after I finished braid - last wednesday or thursday, my console redringed. it had been locking up and hangin in ganes so it wasn't a total surprise. console #2 by the way. Dead dead dead.

mine died a few weeks ago. sent it in on a friday, had it back the following thursday. works great. It was a launch unit. I think the new one may have the opus mobo in it because of the late june date on the label.

Alright guys. I just got the RRoD and did the usual replugging of power cables like everyone suggests, no luck. I was getting some intermittent freezing and I was just trying to hold out until the Sept. price drop to get a new one and transfer my stuff! So much for that plan.

So I'm about to call, but has anyone tried the so called James Dean fix that you can buy directions for at xbox360redlightfix.com? I'd be fine with potentially voiding the warranty on my current box if I could just fix the thing right now, and I build PCs and have modded PS1s, so I'm comfortable opening the thing up...I just wasn't sure if the directions for the fix were worth paying for. They say it is not the towel fix and doesn't involve soldering, and they guarantee it...

Any opinions?

If you're set on fixing it yourself I would follow this guide:
http://www.llamma.com/xbox360/repair/ring_of_light_x-clamp_fix.htm

I've read a number of people use this method and had some success. I don't know how long the machine will last but it's a good last resort before throwing the box in the trash.

Thanks for the link--interesting stuff. I wonder if that's the same fix that the pay site offers--they say you only need household tools, which makes me somewhat dubious, honestly. This looks more like what I would expect to have to do.
