"My Xbox 360 Died and I Lived to tell the story" Official Thread

I'm on my fourth. It's great that Falcons and Jaspers are widely available now, it really is, but when MS keep sending me refurbs with 2006 manufacture dates that keep breaking on me, with issues ranging from RROD to the DVD drive dying, it dosen't do me much good. But you may be right, perhaps it's my fault, or maybe I just made the whole fucking thing up.

I'm sure it's not true, but I swaer sometimes I look at all these posts of dying 360s and I reckon more than half are made up.

I've had 4 and only ONE of those died, which was the launch one after 12 hours.

I know over a dozen people with 360s and ONE of those had again, a launch unit die.

I don't know what the hell you guys are doing to your 360s for them to be dying so often.

Because the build quality is absolute fucking trash. My first 360 died, RROD. Of the 6 RL friends who also own 360s, One had his falcon RROD afer a month, another has had 3 fail on him, another is on his second. My 8 month old Elite has never been right from day 1. It takes two power cycles to boot and sounds like a leaf blower. I am absolutely anal about keeping my consoles well looked after. Free from dust and with plenty of ventilation. I can't believe now, after all that's happened, that anyone could still believe it's something that users are doing to cause these catastrophic failure rates in this piece of shit.

I don't even want to talk about how many battery packs, wireless wheels, controllers and wireless headsets I've had fuckup.

My 360 died last friday. Launch unit, over 2 years with me. I had 82.500 gamerscore when it gave me the 3 red lights, so yeah, it was excessively played over these 2 years. I'm pretty happy by the ammount of time it lasted considering the insane number of consoles breaking out there. Just got a brand new falcon unit today, date on it reads 04/22, let's see how much time this one will last :D

Got RRoD on Monday. I've had my 360 for 2 years so I guess it's not too bad.

I've been using the towel trick for the last few days with success, but I'll probably go out and buy an Arcade soon, especially seeing as they're on offer for a stupidly cheap £99.

Do what others do scam Gamestop,do a towel trick before taking to the store so it will boot and sell it.:lol

That most what people are doing since i buy a used one and failed 20 minutes after opening it,then i change it for a new core.

Stats coming in a bit... but before that I was looking at who had had most dead 360s reported in this thread and I've come up with an list.

Owners most hated by their 360s (5 or more dead):
6 dead - rs7k
5 dead - dot50cal
5 dead - firstinhell
5 dead - forgotten ancient
5 dead - painey
5 dead - vustadumas
5 dead - wickedlaharl

There may have been more in the thread, remember that these are just the people that I could work out when their machine died (or if it actually died). If you're in that list and the numbers are wrong, let me know. If you're not in the list and you've had five or more die on you... let me know when they all died so I can see what's missing off my list.

Usual Disclaimer: These numbers wont match up to the list post simply because unless I could tell when your 360 died / was replaced, you weren't included in the figures. That's basically anyone that just posted to say that their 360 died last year some time or they've had x dead 360s and gave no more information. Also, if you posted to say your 360 was acting up and never came back to confirm its death / shipment / getting a new one... you aren't included either.

Don't forget that NPD US numbers are simply included to give a rough idea of how many 360s are out there for each particular month.

264izrc.png

In the figures so far are 1319 dead / replaced 360s, 16 of which were falcon models.

This Month

RRoD: 28
Drive: 4
Other Red Light: 3
Video: 2
Freezing: 1

8 of the 9 refurb failures were due to RRoD.

Ok. It's been one year since the Falcon model 360 was released (technically it's missing about 10 days but it's close enough).

1 Year of Falcon Issues
1RL: 2
DOA: 4
RRoD: 7
Video: 3
Total: 16

Here's some other rough numbers for perspective.

1st Year of Tracked 360s
635 dead (no specific info, only started doing that this year)

360s Reported In November 2006
42 dead in one month (98 was highest ever)

16 dead falcon models in like, one year now? not too bad. I'm pretty sure the 360 is just as reliable as any other console now.

My first 360 broke over a month ago and I was too damn lazy to find my own box and ship it out. Weeks passed and the label I was supposed to print out expired. I was finally going to call Microsoft again, but this time specify that I want a repair box shipped to me, and I found out that I could cancel the repair and request a new one all online. And when you do it online, your only option is that they send you the box, I think.

So if you call and find out you have to mail it in your own box (I think they'll have you do this if you answer "yes" to owning a printer) but don't want to, just go online, cancel the repair, and schedule a new one. After that first call they'll have all your information in their system so you can do it off xbox.com.

It's easy enough to just go and buy a box at UPS though. They pack it for you and everything. That way no need to wait for Microsoft to mail you a coffin.

UPS messed up or something for me. They put up a new "Rescheduled Delivery Date" and it's October 14th -_-

Good stats psychotext. Ugh. I really don't want a refurbished Zephyr.

Chalk up another dead refurb. My launch 360 died in March of 2007, and the refurb replacement died last week. It was sure great talking to Max again, though.

Sigh.

The incidence of refurb failure is astonishing. If MS weren't already ashamed of their initial hardware reliability they should be downright ashamed of what they've been doing with refurbs.

A quick question to anyone who received a replacement for their 3RRoD, were you not able to re-acquire your download content?
For example, I go into Account Managment & into Download History to re-download the keys my content, videos & trailers so they work offline just like in the FAQS tell you.

Yet when I turn off Live, my content no longer works again.
I emailed tech suport asking them that the above steps did not work, I got a canned reply that only said to use those exact same steps that failed to work in the first place.

Now I'm screwed out of all the stuff I downloaded on my previous Xbox360. I can't even use the media update that lets me play .avi files offline anymore. A fucking license key is attached to the free media update.

I sent my 360 off last week, got it back two days ago, It's probably a refurbished, but at least it's got HDMI so it's a falcon right?

probably. I bought my 360 last year though and even though it had an HDMI port it wasn't falcon. no problems with it so far though.

My 4th is now dead, glad it died now and not at the end of the month, should hopefuly have it back by the time Fallout 3 and Fable 2 come out.
Anyone know what the usual turn around is for the uk?

Based on posts over at Eurogamer you should expect to get it back in less than 2 weeks.

They're supposed to transfer the license over. Go to www.xbox.com and do the online drm transfer. You can find it under Support.

I was in the same situation as you after my last repair. I ended up having to use my once per year license transfer. I really hope my console doesn't crap out again this year.

Damnit, I wanted to believe my launch Elite is safe. But typing that out shows me how silly that kind of thinking is :(

I just sent mine off today. UPS said it would ship out today and probably get there on Wednesday. Here's to hoping for a quick and reliable turnaround. I also wrote down the serial number and product ID to see if I get the same one back. I really hope they don't send me a refurb.

Sigh, yeah me too. I had just received my beta key to COD:W@W and when I turned it on to give it a go, my 360 said "no". Talk about a kick in the nuts.

I've been having a fun new problem with my 360, it freezes. Like, I can even get passed the initial start-up logo before it freezes, but there's no RRoD. I'm pretty sure it's beyond anything I could fix myself at this point, which is utter bullshit since this is the replacement unit I've had for only two months that M$ sent me after me previous 360 did RRoD.

Ugh >_<

So are they going to send me a 1 month XBL code or something since according to them it will take 2-3 weeks after I ship it. How long does it take to send me the coffin?

Well, I was playing the COD5 beta and I got video chiping on the screen, and I turn it off and I got the fucking E 74 NOOO problems with this system at all until today. Luckily, I have an extra system from a previous repair! So, glad to Fallout 3 in 2 weeks. Well I guy on the phone basically made me happy as hell for about 5 mintues, becasue he told me my warranty was good til Oct 17 08. Good time to fuck up right, well right as I was going to get my coffin he changes his mind and says I ran out last month . I wanted to fucking kill him.

HOW do you make a system RROD!?

Take a hair dryer and shoot hot air into it for a few minutes. It revived my 360. Be sure to move it around or else you'll melt the plastic.

Sent of my Premium today after procrastinating for over month :P Can't wait to get it back! I've been so deprived...

I gotta say though, the customer service isn't nearly as bad as people say. So far everything is going smoothly.

What?! I don't know how long mine will be gone. I do know it should arrive in Mesquite, TX tomorrow, but they sure as hell didn't offer me anything like that. I have an odd question though...Did your rep tell you "sorry that your console broke"? Mine didn't and it sort of pissed me off. To answer your question, I'm not sure. The rep I talked to said to print out a shipping slip they emailed to me and go to UPS where I paid $6.16 for a box for it to be shipped in. My understanding from that rep was they didn't do the whole coffin thing anymore since I did bring it up to him and he give me those instructions I've listed above.

Just did it, moved it around and everything, it was hot. It did the same thing though. The thing is when I plug the power cable in it just has the middle green light, I turn it off and put my com cable in and I get the E 74. Fucking think worked perfect til about 3 hours ago!

I'm more pissed at the fucking customer service guy getting my hopes up and then crushing them, fucking M$.
I'll call again tomorrow and see if I can lie about RROD, and way will it not let me register my system ONLINE so I can get a coffin without talking to a CSR

Next time tell them you don't have a printer or request the repair online. They should send you a box that way.

It really won't bother me to pay the $6.16 if I actually get it back sooner, more specifically in time for Gears 2. I'm trying to be optimistic and hoping it comes back in time for Fable 2 release so I can play it on day one. I'm dying to play these game and the sooner the better. Come on MS, don't fail me...I don't want a refurb, I want the repairs to be done right, and get it back to me before the 21st! PLEASE! :D

I luckily kept my box and custom foam padding from my last repair return. I have no doubt, I'll be sending it back soon due to the onslaught of fall games.

Thanks for keeping on top of this. It is important that people are aware of the issues even though the RROD issue seems to going away with the new consoles. It is even more of a kick in the nuts that the most adversely effected people are the ones who supported the console early and paid the higher retail price tag associated with it.

My latest 360 has been performing fine with no issues since I got it. It is a "8/2006" model that only has the additional GPU heatsink. I wonder what kind of position Microsoft would be in now if they had included this extra cooling solution from the very beginning.

Nice number crunching and checking Psychotext.

16 dead Falcon chipsets in one year, vs 635 xenons in 2006. Wow.

But refurb quality of the 360s is really terrible. Sigh... my poor Zephyr elite.

OK UPS (according to their site via the tracking number) delivered my 360 to MS on the 11th of this month. But it still says "Waiting for device at service center". WTF?

Is this normal or has the 360 gone AWOL?

Check that...UPS is listing a "destination scan" at 10:10pm on 10/14. Hopefully they will process and get to work on it tomorrow.

Just quoting your post so it doesn't get missed by someone who could provide an answer.

I bought a 360 arcade 4 days ago and today when I turned it on, the video out wasn't worked right at all. I tried 3 different hdmi cables, and the composite cables. The hdmi would flicker in and out and only show the dashboard in a bright red hue, and it was very grainy with scanlines-like distortions, plus it was very off center to the right. The composite looked the same, except in SD and it didn't flicker. My TV is still working great with my PS3 and laptop, so I'm pretty sure that's not it.

I called the support line and they said they would repair it, but I'm put off by the 2-3 weeks to return, plus having to buy my own packing stuff.

I was wondering if it's possible for me to cancel the return order somehow and just return it to Best Buy. If so, is there any way they'll let me keep my memory card?

And how is the whole gamer tag/xbox live gold trial and stuff going to transfer?

Taking it back to best buy would be the smartest thing to do (don't get into refurbs unless you have no choice). They should let you just keep your memory card and they'll return the one in the other box.

You might have to ask nicely though. :)

Tag / gold trial will be associated with the profile on your card.
