"My Xbox 360 Died and I Lived to tell the story" Official Thread

I decided to buy a 360 for Fable 2. My decision as to where to buy the system came down to who had the cheapest/best warranty.

I figured Walmart was the winner saying they had a 2 year warranty for $20. I went over there yesterday and asked for more information about what that warranty entails. He informs me that it is an extension to the Microsoft warranty and I would deal with Microsoft and not Walmart if my system red-rings.

Im a little dissapointed by that so I go to best buy - surely their $45 2 year "Geek Squad Black Tie" warranty will cover me in the case of a RROD.

I ask the Best Buy employee "Ok, if I buy my 360 here and it red rings on me in say a year - if I bring it back can I leave with a new 360 that day?"

Best Buy employee: "Uh...im actually not sure let me check" *runs off - comes back* "Ok we used to do that but now what we do is if you have a defective system we will give you a refurbished on that same day."

What a bunch of BS. I tell him "I would gladly pay the extra money to have a good warranty but I dont want a refurb I want a new one if mine breaks."
He says "Yeah I dont get it either. I think its Microsofts new policy or something"

How bad is it, honestly, when a console is so defective that pretty much all electronic stores have to change their policies to give you a "refurbished" product in the case of your new product breaking?

Doesn't make any sense.

E74 message.
I called support, and received good service. To my surprise, it will be free of charge.
They said I will be getting the same console in return. I wonder if I really will. Sure hope that they make it magically quiet.

How long have you had the system?

About a year, 13 months maybe. I got it the week they came out here.
Germany that is.
I also asked if I would be having any problems playing my XBLA games. I was told no, since I will be keeping my hard drive. That is true, correct?

They say they transfer your licence to the new 360. Yes you keep your hard drive. Even if they don't, you can perform a licence transfer once per year using the xbox website.

As expected, my 360 arrived today.

Manufacture date is 2008-08-30
Was the one you sent them a 2006 or 2008 unit? I hope I get a Falcon back...

Why hasn't my 360 still arrived >_<!
I'm still waiting on mine also. My service order went to Stage 4 on Xbox.com on Thursday and yet it still haven't even started shipping yet. I seriously doubt that if it doesn't ship out today that I will get it back on the 22nd, as that's the delivery date on the UPS site. (It just says Billing Information Received.)

The online registration won't go through for me. It's not accepting the serial number and giving me an error page. Then it tells me to call the 1 800 number to continue. The lady, although not rude like the other bastard that talked to me a few weeks ago, said they are not accepting any repair requests today. Said to call back in 24-48 hours. WTF is up with that?

Actually, USPS just informed that my Xbox 360 arrived at the McAllen facilities at 8AM today and they still haven't updated a thing in their support page. Kinda makes me nervous there is some kind of problem. I really want my 360 before Gears 2, and if it's a new system or the same one I would be happier.

BTW Crippler, I also marked mine in certain "Secret" spots to see if they give me the same Xbox or a new/refurb one.

Mine came with a letter in the box saying they replaced it.

I guess with that MNF Date it must have been a new one, not a refurb. Is this your first time or second or third or fourth =P. Microsoft still hasn't updated their page, I guess they will just skip to the "shipped" part. As long as they are quick =P

I am looking at some posts before but I can't find an important tidbit...

Which repair center did you send the Xbox to? :D

According to my tracking details, it went to Toronto. Hope that helps.

Canadian repair centre is in Toronto. Don't think US repairs are done there at all. I hope I got an 08 one. How long did it take for you to get it back after the status changed? I'm assuming Purolator Air is quick.

Went from Toronto to Montreal in 3 days. I probably would've had it yesterday, but they don't deliver on Sundays.

3. Device received at service center - We have received your console.

Wohooo!! Now get it done with Microsoft :lol

anything new about the jasper consoles? what about the new holiday packs, are these falcons or jaspers?

sorry that i ask in this thread, but i think it goes in the same direction.

Wondering if I should even mention the fact that my 360 is having disc read problems =\. 13th 360 incoming? crapola.

Nothing concrete yet... the first 60gb machines were falcons though.

I assume you used to be sado | aggravatedgamers? In which case I only have 3 dead 360s listed for you.

  • March 2007
  • June 2007
  • December 2007
What's the detail on the rest?

Yes I am but I have had 11 break on me. Check the story linked. The story was posted a couple times in the thread. I don't think the list was updated correctly because I had 360s break on me as early as January 2006.

Detail on the rest -
"The list of problems is almost comically large: three red lights of death, two with disc read errors, two dead on arrival, several with random audio and video-related issues and one that actually exploded."

I don't remember the order or the exact dates of the 360 breaks currently. I sent 1up a list of support request numbers and dates proving every one but I no longer have the list.

As I say when I post the stats, unless you specifically posted when they died you don't get included in the stats. Not an issue now of course as they're collected as time goes on, but when I first put together the main stats it was impossible to tell when people had their machines die in some cases as I had to go back through over a year worth of posts... some of which were as vague as "had 3 die on me".

Checked the story, didn't see any extra detail on when they died. (Just saw your edit, no matter) If you have a rough idea I'll add them, if not, no problem.

Ah, gotcha.

January 2006
Feb 2006
April 2006
June 2006
July 2006
September 2006
November 2006
January 2007
March 2007
June 2007
December 2007

They didn't include the dates in the article unfortunately. I gave Phil (the one who wrote the article) a little over 7 pages worth of material/proof to use in the article. There was also a while there where it started to take longer between deliveries because of some systems getting lost by ups (2 of them).

CRAP!!!

360 just died earlier, I changed the colour of my car in Forza 2 and apparently that put enough strain on the poor machine. This is the third 360 I've had die on my watch. It never gets any easier.

First 360

Launch 2005 - July 2006 console froze more and more frequently until I couldn't get past the start up.

Second 360 - Free replacement

July 2006 - April 2008 1 red quadrant, Error E17, called Microsoft they wanted £60 to fix/possibly replace the unit. I used it as an excuse to buy my Elite, plus I would've missed GTA4 if I'd waited for a repair.

Third Xbox - Elite bought as a replacement

April 2008 - Present. The console still works great and hasn't put a foot wrong.

Third broken Xbox 360
September 2007 - October 2008 The proper Red Ring of Death. I'm visiting family in Australia for a while, and my step dad bought a 360 for Halo 3. I turn up and the 360 dies. I hope my Elite is okay under my brother's care back in the UK.

This last 360 was actually manufactured in September 2006, even though it was bought September 2007, which I'm not happy about but how was my step dad meant to know it was so old. So I'm not too suprised that it died, especially with how warm it's been in Western Austrailia recently. I'll call Microsoft tomorrow and arrange the machine's coffin.

*salutes another broken console* You served my family well, and died in the line of duty.

?

I'd give up already. The 2nd time my console redringed, I was so disgusted that its mostly a HD-dvd player at the moment. Never even went back to playing Geowar2. I still can't get over the fact that Braid redringed the console. A DLC game with the graphics that braid has.

I just got an E-mail from UPS about Label Delivery, and I printed it out.

So now do I have to bring my Xbox to a UPS store, buy and box, package it then ship it off? I thought the UPS guys drops off a box at my house then picks it up later.

Faster with the Shipping Label. Just print, go immediately to UPS and send it immediately, not wait days for Microsoft to send it.

Status Report: Mine is still being repaired

Thanks for the quick reply.

I'll have to do it tomorrow morning. So do I package it up myself or will UPS store do that for me?

My second 360 went down tonight.

This one is an Elite purchased in May 2007.

No red lights this time. The system freezes during disc-based games - gives an 8-bit beep and then freezes solid.

My warranty is through Target so I have to call for a shipping label and send it in. Turnaround time is officially 2-3 weeks, but the guy said this center usually whips them back out in three days.

This thing BETTER be back before Gears 2.

Meanwhile, I have a fresh new copy of Midnight Club: Los Angeles that I cannot play.

I KNEW I should have bought the PS3 version!

Yeah you do the package, but its simple stuff, no way that you can mess up, and UPS guys would also help just in case.

So, I got a console back on Friday from Microsoft. Manufactured June 08, BenQ drive, no HDMI. Not sure if it's a new console or one that happened to break super early and was refurbished.

Whatevs. Hope it lasts a while.

Where are the coffins shipped from? I'm in Canada and it's been a week. Also where do I enter the tracking number on the purolator site? I tried entering it where it says pin # but it just ends up getting an error and saying I should call instead.

So my 360 got stage 4'd yesterday and I'm waiting for it to ship. My question: the serial number on the Device Information page is the same one that I sent in. That means they fixed my original, right?

Specific games do not fry Xbox 360's, it just happens to me that at that moment something bad happened inside.

I know, that's why I said 'fuck Microsoft' and not 'Ubisoft'.

Still, a bit messed up that it had to happen right after I popped in a fresh version of FC2. Which I can now trade in for the PS3 version because I won't be able to use my 360 for a while.

Do you need a receit or something for RROD support?

Nah, just give them the serial console # and you are set.

It got repaired!!
Device shipped to customer - Your console has been repaired or replaced. We are shipping it back to you.

I think it's the same serial number as well... do all consoles start with 0130? I forgot to write it down lol.

EDIT:
Oh..

# Warranty Type: Repair

I much prefer my old console than a refurb :D
Oh I got another year extension! # Warranty Expiration: 10/21/2009 7:59:59 PM

I have just a question; my 360 core (2006) was replaced with a new, few days ago (I'm almost sure) but I have notice its sounds is yet loud; well, but the new model doesn't it more silent?

# Warranty Type: Repair

Time from Sent to Fixed: 5 days. Expect to be delivered in 3 days so turnaround would be 8 business days, or 9 if it arrives Monday and not Saturday.

I also hope there isn't a delay with the shipping, since they had a mess with my address.

Jesus Christ someone up there hates me.

I just traded in my 360 version of Far Cry 2, because it RROD'd. I came back from the store with the PS3 version.

I put it in my PS3, and it tells me I need to update to firmware 2.5, but it won't install, it just stops around 60% and it says an error occured. Whenever that message pops up my PS3 restarts and starts installing 2.5 again, but I can't shut it off during the install process!?!

And to make it...'worse', my 360 works again, so I shouldn't have traded FC2 in the first place.

Fucking hell...
