"My Xbox 360 Died and I Lived to tell the story" Official Thread

The disc drive on my 360 finally crapped out for good on Saturday. Rather than deal with MS customer support, and potentially paying them $90 to repair the system (which they have attempted twice and never managed to fix) I just went to Gamestop and bought a new Arcade unit. I traded in a bunch of crap, so it was only $100. I'm pissed I had to spring for a new unit, but this one works like a dream and the disc drive is practically silent in comparison to the old one, which always sounded like a nuclear reactor going into meltdown. I'm glad to finally wash my hands of the janky original unit.

Alright, I got an email saying they received my request for a repair but haven't received my console yet. I call the Xbox Customer Support number and they say my console has been received and shipped out.

Weird, at the time I was writing this, I log on to the repair support site and it's updated saying my 360 has been shipped and for the past week the site has shown that they haven't received my console yet.

This is fucking confusing. :lol Hopefully they are sending me my console back.

its such crap that if you're 360 breaks before the RROD from some other issue that you have to pay $100 to fix it.... anyone have any tips to make an already broken 360 show the red rings?

That entirely depends what's wrong with it. You're not going to be able to get a 360 with a faulty DVD drive to RRoD for instance.

Or at least, you probably could... but it would take a while and a lot of effort.

So Target's repair company, Micro Medics, has had my 360 for a week and a half. Just found out today that the repairs have failed and they can't get parts. (What the hell?) So MM will be contacting the warranty company and the likely outcome is I will receive a gift card to replace the console.

I'm irritated by how long this has taken, and by the fact that I won't be playing Gears 2 on Friday, but the prospect of getting a brand-new system with the latest internals is a decent consolation. And you can bet I will make sure to pick the absolute lastest build I can find on the shelf on the day I walk in with that gift card.

My Xbox didn't RROD; rather, it would beep and freeze up about 30 seconds into any disc-based game. Bad logic board, they said.

I am going on my third Xbox now.

Wow..i just noticed something, there are TWO people in this thread that i know from another forum (i wont say any names) but they are big time sony fans and hate on the 360 on a regular basis there and i mean all the time and for a long time now. and i just noticed they are in here saying their 360 just died lol... and whats even more kinda fishy is these two guys are like "buddies" .. you guys think there are some people in here lying?

Anyways, i had my Falcon RROD on me but i unplugged the power cable and left it sit with no power source for about 15 minutes..plugged my 360 back up and it works again. I think this is one of these temp RROD's the power brick causes once in a whiie..where its just a temp issue and nothing seriously By the way..this is a Falcon unit..made back june08 months ago

There have been plenty of liars here... and quite a few got banned for it. Nothing anyone can do about it though unless they make themselves particularly obvious to the mods.

As for your question, yes - that's a falcon.

update time... i spoke with customer support and they recommended i go ahead and pay for the repair but they said i could try and red ring it. So i wrapped my 360 in 2 old tshirts and left it on for about 8 hours. Woke up from my nap and there you have it... 2 red rings flashing!

Wooh :) Just saved myself $99.

Luckily one of my roommates has a 360 so i can still play gears 2 on friday!

I've got bad news for you... 2 lights is just overheat protection kicking in. You'll likely get a lot of 2 lights before you get it to 3 light.

I just turned on my 360 to play some NHL 08 and got the E 74 lower-right quadran red ring. I checked the manufacture date and it's just over a year old (Nov 5, 2007). I hope I can get it fixed soon.

If it's over a year, then they're gonna charge you, sorry =/

I got a E74 as well only six months into my Falcon's life

I got a 120 gig HDD yesterday and it makes a soft clicking noise whenever it tries to access data. I was wondering if I got a lemon or if this is normal.

I bought it Mar 7, 2008 so I should be good then. I'm just suprised that just after a year from the manufacture date it dies.

OK, I hope someone reads this:

I'm looking to get a new 360 to replace my garbage one (too lound, refuses to start up 50% of the time). Thing is, I always hear about these new upcoming chipsets but I barely pay attention.

If I want a new system with a 120GB drive, should I grab it now or is there a better revision just around the corner?

Console broke, sent it in, and the one they sent back was DOA. Extremely fucked up. SO I send it back. Just got another one back, DOA. This is so fucked up it's funny, but fucking not for me. As I said in my previous post, it's just ridiculous. Wasting my time and their resources.

Just to repeat, 2 DOA CONSOLES IN A ROW. 3 months of my live subscription gone, and only 2 cards to make up for it.

I just want to throw it in the trash right now.

Just received my 2nd replacement elite this year. This one was manufactured the same day as the last one. Is much quieter though, I just know this will Red Ring this weekend after playing gears.

System was in shit condition, my stuff is usually mint. So when I opened it to see scratches all along the front faceplate / button... wasn't happy.

I figured this will end up being sent back to ms this year prob, so nothing much to gripe about.

Well, after months of fighting with my borderline-busted Xbox, with plenty of games freezing or having really bad graphical problems, I finally got this shit sorted out and Microsoft is sending me my coffin.

Soon, my second Xbox will be sent away to the magical land of McAllen, TX where it will be repaired.

After the two years of shit I've been put through, it's the least they could do. At least I got a discount on the repair cost.

Fuckin' Disc drive is broken.

Won't open half the time, and failed to load gears of war 6 times out 6 tries last night.

What are my options.

If I recall correctly, the disc drive is only under a 1 year warranty. My xbox is just a hair under 2 years old now.

Will they fix it anyway if I'm persuasive on the phone? Will they fix it but charge me?
I've never had any problems yet, so I am new to this hell.

Since this was my third issue it seems that they are giving me overnight shipping through the entire process which cuts the wait down so much its not even funny.

They shipped me a box Wednesday, I got the box back Thursday. I shipped my coffin back Thursday, they got it on Friday.

The only thing that sucks is the weekend shipping lag. They probably won't ship until Monday now if that.

I'm confident I'll get my 360 back in total of a week amount of wait time which is great. The sad thing is that a lot of this hardware doesn't seem to be any good. I've had a refurb and an actual repair done now, and neither option seems very good. Repairs don't seem solid enough to last that long, and refurbs seem to be even worse off. Then you've got guys with elites and falcon units saying they've gotten failed units.

If it fails one more time, I'm contacting the BBB and seeing if I can demand a paycheck back or at least the newest model console they have out. Meanwhile I'll probably end up buying a new arcade unit after that.

I expect this refurb to last 6 months...thats the average these things seem to have lasted me.

So Target's giving me a gift card with which to replace my broken 360, but I'm also getting my old hard drive back from the repair center.

Will I run into problems trying to share two hard drives between my new 360? Will I need to buy a memory card to store my profile?

Thanks in advance.

Okay so the coffin took two weeks to get to my house and I shipped it out a few days later. Now on the instructions I got it said I had 30 days from the service request to send it in. I sent it about 15/16 days later because it took so long to receive the coffin. I was getting tracking updates the first 2 days and then nothing for the next 2. Last update was that it had been received at the package sorting center. I heard Purolator was terrible at updating from many people so I thought nothing of it. I decided to check my repair status on xbox.com and it no longer says I have a console being repaired. The console I have registered now says it is in warranty and that it is a repair warranty. So do you think it's already been fixed or should I be worried? Apparently on the new site it says 20 days instead of 30 to ship the console. I tried sending another request in case they hadn't received it and I got an error saying that SKU no longer exists.

Unbelievable.
UnFUCKINGbelievable.

I go to play COD2 and boom, those goddamn 3 red lights. Although maybe I should've seen this coming when the game kept freezing, and dropping audio causing me to reset.

That this comes a day after I gave MS money for Gears 2 is just...awesome.

I forgot does the MS line operate on weekends? Last time I had to call them 3 times over a month just to get my box.

I have a backlog of PS3 games I haven't touched but GODDAMNIT, I paid 400 bucks for this thing make it work!

I'm still amazed at how different each persons experience with Microsofts repair process can be. Some people get back a system that has the new Opus motherboard, some don't..Some get a free game from a small selection, some don't...Some people get overnight shipping, some don't.:lol
It seems like such a waste of money for MS to keep fixing these early systems the way the used to, knowing full well that they'll be back for repair in no time. Just give the Falcon-lite boards to us poor bastards and give UPS a break.

I didn't get the new Opus board, a free game or overnight with my last (4th) repair. I even asked a supervisor for overnight since I has just received the system back the day before and they had failed to fix everything wrong with it. He told me he wasn't allowed to do overnight.

Here's hoping my next repair with at least get my the better motherboard.

They're making me get my own box now too!

At least I'm getting another gold card. You know I was :THIS: close to breaking down and paying for internet gaming for Gears 2.

Yeah. From what I understand, the free game is a thing of the past. No way you can get that now, at least that is what I hear. I would definitively like one at this point, because these gold cards aren't worth very much really.

I'm starting to think that what people were saying some time ago about MS not actually fixing anything but rather replacing the defective parts and shipping the thing back is true.

It would seem that getting good quality from MS is about how much your willing to recall/cry.

Its almost getting to the point where I'm hanging up 3 times in a row until I hear a positive well speaking english voice before I ask for something. If it seems like the person is going to be a douche I just hung up.

This is my 4th box I'm about to get, so I know pretty much what to do to get what I want. Haven't received games, but I've negotiated free shipping, reduced shipping, and overnight shipping.

I called a week ago and they said expedited service wasn't available. They processed the repair order (get my own box) and I accepted it. The next morning I said to hell with that and called again and demanded overnight.

There is absolutely no reason why people with 3+ repairs shouldn't get beyond excellent service. Whats also an injustice is them reshipping out these refurbs. Its almost criminal. If it wasn't for the 1 billion dollars spent recently then I'd think MS was actually making money off of the repair service.

People used to compare the 360 failure rate to the Ps2. Well now the Ps2 failure rate is a soft lick on the ass compare to the anal plowing MS is giving us this gen.

I still haven't received an email from MS with the shipping info :lol

Great turnaround for my box this time. I'm frustrated that this happened at all and I'm still curious as to what the quality of my refurb will be, but I love this expedited service that I got.

My last 2 repairs have taken about 2 and a half weeks with UPS ground. You can't underestimate the weekend lag in combination with 3 business day shipping. I also don't know if the actual repair speed is improved with this service.

But they shipped the box Wednesday, I got it Thursday, they got it Friday, and they shipped it out today and will be here tomorrow.

If anyone here has had 3 repairs, I strongly suggest you DEMAND expedited service. It quickens things up significantly.

My second one has just died, I guess that's what I get for ignoring it for a week. I wouldn't mind so much, but I just bought a live vision/xbox live package 10 minutes ago. Bah.

I think I've had this one for 2 years, anyone know if it's still covered in Switzerland or if I'm screwed?

So I've had the red rings before... but now I've got no rings at all. On a scale of 1 to 10, ten being the most screwed, how screwed am I?
Does it actually do anything when you press the power button? If it doesn't, you've probably got a broken PSU. If it does, you're 10 out of 10 on your scale.

Got mine back after 5 business days. Not bad but it's a refurb. Manufactured in 6-22-2007 exactly 3 months after my first one. It's all scratched up. At least I got a 1 month XBL code.

NOOOO!!!!

The box was delivered to my door today. I pack up my system and take it to the UPS store. As I walk in, the dude at the counter looks at me and says, "So your Xbox died." All I say is, "You see this box a lot?" He's like yeah and makes sure I remembered to remove any games and my harddrive from the system. Cool guy.

Why haven't these systems been recalled? If the guy at UPS can tell it's an broken Xbox by just a white box, he must be seeing a ton come through. I hope the turn around time is quick since I want to play some Gears.

Money / public perception. Besides, if they recalled them it would take you about 3 months to get one back and based on refurb quality it would still end up dying.

Nnnnoooooo! ;-( ;-(

My beloved 360, two years and 11 months young, has passed (My first).

Like the little trooper it was, it failed 1 month before my three-year warranty ran out, god bless it.

I hope against hope that I don't get some scratched up, piece of shit refurb in return. Or, god forbid, some Premium console with an atrocious chrome tray.

God Speed little buddy, you let me finish Gears 2 campaign before breathing your last gasp.

;-(

Mine died very randomly.

Also, MS needs to stop outsourcing their calls IMMEDIATELY. It really makes it look unprofessional. Are these people working from their homes or something?

Sick of happening to be at the bottom of the page. Good old 360 deserves better.

I had a woman do the same thing when I took my Xbox to the UPS store. I walked in holding my box and she said, "Ah, another Xbox for repair?". I just laughed.

yep, shit still happens so often. I remeber back in the day I got the exact same look. I then looked off to the right of the the store and saw stacks of the same boxes. I did a "wtf!?" and the clerk just laughed and said "yep.."
