"My Xbox 360 Died and I Lived to tell the story" Official Thread

I remember when I walked into a Purolator drop-off center, when the guy saw the coffin in my hands, he said jokingly: "We don't want of your stinking Xbox! :lol "

My 11-21-2005 manufactured 360 finally gave up the ghost today.

I think I bear the responsibility: I'd literally been thinking daily for the past several days about the extended warranty period ending soon and wondering if I could "trigger" an episode to get the RROD, just because I'd been far too lucky to this point in not having it happen. Apparently, my "mentalist" power worked to full effect, as the SOB crapped out after about 10 minutes of Fable 2 today. Thank the good lord my week off for Thanksgiving is coming soon. I'm so glad to NOT have my 360 to play for that time off...:lol

RROD'd! Had literally hours before finally caved in and bought a 120gig HD. Hadn't even taken the thing out of the package, and KA-BOOM. No Gears, but worse, no Mirror's Edge! *sigh*

I'm trying to replace my second Xbox and just got the gift card from Target. Found an Elite, manufacture date Sept. 8, 2008 and lot number 0837. Any clue if this is a Jasper? I'd like this one to last.

If it's manufacture date says 2005, 2006, 2007, or 2008, it's not a Jasper.

Fuck.

FUCK!

I have an Elite. It isn't dead, yet. But it freezes. A LOT. I thought that it was just the game, because it just started doing this when I played Dead Space. Now it happens when I'm playing Gears 2. What REALLY sucks, is that I'll be in a Horde match, where I'm up to level 14, and BAM! Frozen.

Then I'll reset the box, and it will work fine for about another half hour then freeze.

FUCK!

If this Xbox dies, that's it. I'm done. I'm not going to get "just one more." This is my third and final. I'll be a PSWii guy...

...even though I LOVE playing Horde... :(

Well, you've nothing to lose (other than a little time) by sending it back to them as a RRoD case rather than just plain dumping it. At least you can sell the refurb if you no longer want it when it gets back. :)

And then I get to deal with Microsoft's Quality Customer Service(tm). There's nothing I like better, than having a nice little chat with Max.

Fake edit: It froze again. This really sucks.

You can do it online can't you? I wouldn't deal with their telephone people if I had a choice... but I live in deepest darkest Wales where places tend to have names like Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch.

Try getting that across to a phone operator. :lol

My launch 360 died the other day as well. Red ring of death. Shit was incredibly random.

I got in with the three year warranty by about 10 or 15 days.

Yeah, don't really know why so many people are saying they called MS. Just go online.

Unless the system can't find your serial, then it makes sense to call.

That's why it's well recommended to throw your system up on the site as soon as you can. At least you can sort out the serial issue at a different time. :)

DAMMIT!!!!!

*sigh*

I tried playing the Left for Dead demo, thinking "Well, the disc drive isn't running, so it probably won't cause it too many problems, then."

Wrong.

FUCK I have Banjo Kazooie and Fallout 3 that I was picking up tomorrow, too.

I'm going to bed. I'm getting way too angry over a fucking videogame console.

If this bullshit continues tomorrow, I'm putting this bitch up on craigslist. This isn't good for my well being. Games relieve stress, not cause it.

Xbox #4 just died on me. I loaded up Call of Duty to look at the description of one of the missions then powered off, went back about 10-15 mins later to try and play some zombie mode and was greeted by 3 red lights. I wonder if I can get that awesome overnight shipping other people have received?

How long does it normally take for them to get the Xbox back to you once it has shipped from their warehouse. It shipped out today, any chance I'll get it tomorrow? I really want to play Gears this weekend.

I finish playing some Fallout then decide to update my PS3 since I havent turned it on since January. It goes through the updates and I pop in a Blu Ray to make sure everything is working, all good. Then I say fuck it I wanna play a lil more Fallout before bed so I turn the 360 on except it didn't turn on

Elite Born 3-24-2007

Red Ringed 11-15-2008

Fucking retarded.

Well, my first 360 died this evening. I got home from work, pulled out my brand new copy of Tales of Vesperia, hit the power button and BAM! RRoD. The funny thing is that I've been telling my wife for months, "I just hope it lasts until I beat Fable 2." I beat Fable 2 last night. :D ANyways, it has a manufacturing date of 7/20/2006. I bought it in September of 06 so it's done reasonably well. I submitted for the coffin online. It's funny, I'm actually going to do some contract work in the Rio Grande Valley next week. I wonder if I can just bring the Xbox to them.

I got mine back on Wednesday - only took 2 weeks from the time a submitted the online repair request. Looks like they sent my original 360 back to me. Strangely, they also replaced the disc drive - it's much quieter now. Plus, when it does read the disc, it no longer makes a horrible grinding noise. Now it sounds a more like the PS3 does when it reads discs. Weird that they would replace the disc drive when it was sent in for RRoD. I'm not complaining though.

We all know the standard procedure of send your RROD and get a broken one in return just to have it break again in a month. My launch one broke in Oct of last year and I just figured I would get a Falcon since they were due in the next month. Bought one last december and indeed it was a Falcon, 30% less power draw and all. But on Thursday I sat down to watch the news on Media Center and upon start up, I got one red right and an E79 error. Of course after that I got nothing but the RROD.

I now question the reliability of the Falcon units.

Long shot, but try booting it up without your HDD attached. Completely remove / reattach the power cable before trying that though.

Falcons die, mine also did, also showing the E79 not the RROD which would be a nice way for Microsoft to get around the 3 year RROD warranty. Anyway, I say the Falcon dead rate is much less than previous models, maybe sightly above PS3 or Wii, but not that bad. Things DO break you know

Hello everybody. Finally got approved so this is my first post.

Anyway my xbox died last week with e74 error. Something with the GPU. They wanted me to pay $100 for the repair but I called like 3 or 4 times a day for 4 days and eventually got the fee waived. They told me that the red ring of death was a "general hardware error" and e74 (one light) is a "hardware error." I just kept saying how absurd that sounded and they really didn't say much back. I should be getting it back around xmas time.

I'm sure its somewhere in this thread but ill post the numbers again for escalated support (they are the only ones that can really help you).

866-506-3826 is an escalated XBOX support number where they all speak English.
Tel: 1-888-236-0927 (this you need a reference number for)

Now I'm not posting here saying my 360 has died, but I was having a conversation with my friend who told me about how his Xbox recently had the RRoD. Now, what was interesting was how he mentioned "4 red lights", now I obviously immediately told him that 4 red lights are referring to the cables not being properly plugged in. But this got me thinking, how many people do you think thought their Xbox had a general hardware failure when in fact it was simply the cables? It honestly wouldn't surprise me if a lot of the "dead" Xbox's were simply not plugged in properly... thoughts?

I think that is very likely man, i had that too for an instance, after reading all these RROD problems i decided to move my 360 to a better ventilated area. Only to plug it in wrong and getting those rings, ofc i immediatly thought f'n shit, but then i noticed my cables :lol

Still got a working X360 since launch.

OK, so Jaspers aren't out yet. Any idea when? I don't want to open this box if they're due shortly.

so, Jasper are still not in production? maybe MS will clear out the channels in 2008 and roll on the Jaspers in 2009... :(

So my first 360 from October 2006 just RROD last night while I was having a video chat session with a buddy of mine. :/

I'm totally clueless as to how this process works, do I just call 18004MYXBOX and they send me a new one after I ship out the old one?

Better to use the website. You send it, then you wait for them to fix / replace it and then send it back.

I fired up my latest Xbox (this is my third) - a Falcon manufactured on 9/8/08. Ran it most of yesterday, downloading demos and things I'd had on my old hard drive.

This Elite may be slightly quieter than the one that just went down - but it definitely runs one HECK of a lot cooler!

My first 360 died on Thursday. I'd had it since Feb 06, started to feel that it was immortal. I was wrong. Didn't really want to go through the hassle of getting it repaired only to receive back an extremely unreliable replacement, so I bought a new elite. All I'm hoping for is that it lasts as long as my last one. If it did then by the time it dies the next xbox will be out, and that one will hopefully be more reliable.

So my 360 was dropping the audio now and then for about 3-5 seconds at a time for a while. Then, I got Lego Batman from Gamefly and that crashed on me. A replacement copy from Gamefly let me play a little further, but then that crashed on me just a few missions in. Audio drops have been getting more frequent in Rock Band 2, and were happening in other games like Dead Space. And then suddenly in the middle of Castle Crashers it just dies and gives me a RROD.

Funny thing is, this is my second unit. The first was a launch unit that I swapped to bjork for his import PS2. According to him, it's loud (as all launch units are), but it still seems to be chugging along.

Oh well.

I'm probably going to pick up an arcade unit to keep me going while this one is out on repair. I'll just return it before the month is up. I know enough people who work at retail stores, that this shouldn't be an issue. That being said, anyone who's done a repair recently happen to remember how long it took to get a 360 back once you sent your busted one out in the MS-approved coffin?

Microsoft emailed me! They received my 360.

Just hope they fix it now 'cause I told them it had 3 rings when it only had 1. :lol

Mine went today NXE looks like a coincidence, chequerboard then three red lights.

Looks like I'm onto my 3rd one.

Got my bro dropping his off to borrow while I wait, got a huge pile of games to play and can't missing L4D on Friday.

WARNING FOR OWNERS OF 360s BOUGHT AT LAUNCH
(all 8 of you that are left ;)

You have 5 days of RRoD coverage left. If you were going to do something about a console that's failing / crashing... do it now.

Mine just showed up repaired! Total time from shipment to receipt: 6 days.

Total time from failure to repair: 2 1/2 weeks... I had nasty call center problems.

I just hope this thing works.

I was a launch window system and I was hopeful that it would avoid the RROD... I was wrong.

Man I hate getting American people on the line at the call center. In my experience they are rude, stupid, or don't really seem to care at all about your problem. I posted Friday that 360 #4 had died on me, I spoke to someone who sounded like she could be living right next door to me in Texas, was very nice, but apparently not too bright since she never submitted my repair request after hanging up with me. So I waited 3 1/2 days for a UPS email for nothing.

Called back tonight and got a woman who barely spoke English, was a pain in the ass to talk to, but she was extremely helpful and sent in a repair order in which I will get a coffin overnight shipped to me and I get it overnight shipped back. So hopefully this time next week I will be back in business on my own 360...
for 4-5 months anyway until it dies again :(

Okay so my box finally died after almost 3 years. I bought a new Arcade because, well, I don't want a refurbished one.

HERE IS MY QUESTION:

I did the DRM tool and transferred all my licenses over to my new console. What happens now when I send my broken Xbox in to get repaired... do they then transfer all my licenses to THAT Xbox? Because I don't want that to happen. I want all my licenses to stay on my new system, but I still want them to fix my broken one. Sorry if this has been answered a million times.

I don't think I've ever seen the answer to that one... mostly because people usually wait for the refurb before transferring their stuff over (playing things online in the mean time).

Arguably they can't do the transfer because you already did... and arguably they'd only do it if they gave you a new box. But who knows. Maybe you can ask them not to (which means they probably will!)

I just got my 360 60GB (HDMI) this weekend and I am worried with all the RROD problems (I work in a game store so I see tonnes coming back) is there anything I can do to protect the console? We sell an external cooler but I don't know how good they actually are. It is in a well ventilated area (will add pic later) and in my front room which is wooden flooring and is normally cold/cool...

The repair center received my 360 so I just have to wait for them to fix it. I was checking around the repair website and noticed my warranty was expiring the January 9, '09, but I bought my system in mid-March '08.

Is it easy to have Microsoft extend my warranty to the full year? It has a button on the repair website to dispute the warranty, but I don't want to do anything that might extend the time I'd have to wait for my 360 to come back from repair.

Sent mine out today... but forgot to copy the tracking # from the prepaid shipping label. Damn!

The UPS guy at the counter immediately recognized that it was an Xbox. :lol Oh MS. How I love and hate you.

They are supposed to transfer the licenses when they send you a replacement, but they don't a lot of time. Me included.
I basically had to go through hell to get them to finally transfer back my licenses & after all that, they didn't transfer 100% of everything.

Ugh sent my Falcon in last month over an e-74, pretty sure I got the same way back although they likely changed the disc drive along with other stuff. Last night I was looking for some free gamerpic in the marketplace and it froze on me. The next 5 or 6 times it froze on me on the 360 bootup screen or right as the blades were opening. I started it again this morning and it was fine but now it's freezing on me again.

Should I request a repair or is this maybe from the Live issues?

seeing this thread bumped so many times makes me worried about my recently bought falcon-x360, I should have waited more since I can't use the warranty in the country I live :(

Down to 7 launch consoles left. Mine died after playing Fallout 3 (Failout 1?) . Warranty . At least the warranty timing was good, even if the game playing timing was not.
I'm thinking about an Arcade, I am so tempted. New dashboard, Fallout 3, Fable 2, Gears 2-too much pressure, I CAN"T STAND THE WITHDRAWAL!!!
Tried my Wii, tried my PS3 and Resistance 2, they just don't satisfy those urges- GOT TO HAVE MY FABLE2/GEARS2/FALLOUT 3 FIX, I'M DYING HERE!!! :D

For the new page.

My second system died on the 1st of the month. I just got a replacement system, but man it seems noisier than the old one. It sounds like the fan is going to die. New console is date 5/28/2008 but it doesn't even have HDMI, cmon guys I know my original one didn't have HDMI, but you could throw me a bone here. If this shit breaks again Im going to ask for a brand new xbox. Hell, if they have a good revision soon, I'll just sell this one off and get that instead.
