"My Xbox 360 Died and I Lived to tell the story" Official Thread

Yesterday, my 360 wouldn't recognize my HDD. Now, my 360 boots up fine without my HDD, but once I plug the HDD back in, my 360 can't get past the initial system load (it doesn't even make it to the dashboard, it just stays on the green Xbox 360 screen). Is my HDD broken, and is there something I can do to fix it?

Just got my harddrive back a week ago because of this. It was a HD issue.

Basically it started like this...

1. Sometimes profile wouldn't show up on dashboard...only fixed by pushing it much harder into the slot.

2. Complete failure like yours. When my HD was on the 360 wouldn't go past the logo.

Only way to test this is to try your harddrive on someone elses 360 or to see if your 360 loads up fine with a different HD.

I never got that chance but just gambled and it turned out that it was just a dead HD. If you have cash, just buy yourself a completely new 60 gb or something. The turnaround time is complete shit because you have to send it in yourself. I'd still send it in to get replaced if you can, but just get it back and use it as a backup or trade it in or something.

Microsoft is supposed to reinstate the warranty, nothing yet.

I still have a suspicion that this unit may have been refurbished though. I wonder if there's any way to prove it (the box didn't have a serial number on it but the console does)

I think it really depends who you are dealing with and if they know what they are doing... XD But the way it tell if you got a new 360 or a refurbished is by the manufactured date, or if there is any scratches on the 360 itself...

Another weekend update:

It's now 3 weeks in. And 1 week after MS Rep called. They called back today, noticed that their tracking number has not moved (on my side, checking XBox support shows an invalid tracking number.)

They're going to redo it again and try to get me a new tracking number by monday.

Im at 2 weeks atm. Still no box for me either. Its looking as if im going to have to Towel trick my system again. Im still amazed/shocked its this much trouble for a damn box. I cant even imagine how bad itll be once they actually have my system in there hands! 2-3 months!?

Posting here because I like the graph a few posts above.

- Got my original 360 on Dec 11, 2005. It died a few days after Gears of War 1 came out (Nov 2006) and was replaced that month from MS.

- That one just died last week (Dec 2008).

I found a jasper while waiting for this one to return, then will probably keep jasper and sell refurbed units.

I posted this before but no one answered. What are the chances of me getting a falcon once my X360 has been repaired? Cause ya know, if I get a Zeprhy its just gonna break again in another 14 months or so.

Anyway, at the moment I'm trying to nag GAME into giving me a swap. The first time around they just quoted the general 12 month guranty but looking through the internet I've found that alot of people have managed to get swaps by quoting the Sales of Good act. I might give them a ring or shoot them a letter/email (If I can find their email that is) cause that seems to give a better sucess rate than talking to the managers who won't budge in store.

Basically, what I'm saying is that I feel that if I get GAME to give me a swap I'll have a better chance of getting a falcon than from getting it repaired. Also, its near XMAS so getting it back in time will probably be a issue if I send it off.

I'm guessing from what you're saying you already have a console with HDMI? In which case getting a falcon refurb is very likely (unless you get unlucky and they send you old stock). If you don't have HDMI, the best you can hope for is one of the "falcon minus HDMI" opus boards.

Getting a swap in store is always the best bet if you can pull it off though obviously.

My 360 finally died yesterday considering it was bought in Dec 06 I consider myself lucky that only the Hdd went bellyup many moons ago. Well I talked to the customer service people and like I thought the RROD thing meant it was still under warranty. I just hope sending it out tomorrow it will not take that long to fix and send back, christmas is a killer on the postal system.

AHHHHH FUCK! My falcon just died. Was playing Fable 2 and all of a sudden I got massive graphic corruption. And now it boots up with 1 red light and error E74.

Edit: FUCK FUCK FUCK!

Urgh. I just got the RROD.

I bought my 360 August '06 - I'm still in warranty right? What crappy timing right before Xmas. I was considering buying a cheap arcade unit if I'm not in warranty. :(

To be precise, my refurb Zeprhy died in 6 months.

I just got my 360 back from microsoft after it RROD'd, but now it's chewing up my game discs!! What do I do? (It seems to be all right if I lay it down, but there's no room on my tv stand. I have to put it on a tv dinner table instead)

Do I just live with it or do I try to get it repaired again?

my 360 is a zephyr, but im obviously gunna need more than that to prove it.

Xbox customer support is also annoying as hell, but i will wait until this weekend to see if the warranty renews itself, like they said it would.

It is really annoying that the Wal-Mart that I initially went to to buy a 360 arcade (the EB was the backup plan, I didn't want to go there initially) was sold out, and i go there today and see some brand-fucking-new arcade systems there, and I am stuck with a Zephyr which aren't even supposed to fucking exist anymore.

Does anywhere even sell Zephyrs now? How the hell is it that they still have one on sale?

My March 06 unit died on me Nov. 26th.

I applied for a box that night, received it a few days later, and shipped off the console. It's supposed to be back tomorrow, so from repair request to getting it back will be roughly 3 weeks.

Not bad.

Of course I went out and bought a Jasper on Nov. 30th so it's not like I was waiting for it with baited breath but still 3 weeks is not bad. I was going to buy the Jasper anyway, btw. HDMI is very nice and it runs so cool. Pity the fans aren't any quieter. I'll use my refurb upstairs on the computer monitor.

Well I got my "new" system back and it says on the back that its was made 7-25-2008. When did they start putting HDMIs in the back of pros because mine doesn't have one.

Also..I was wondering...how do I get all of my downloads back so everyone on my system can play them? Do I need to recover my gamertag?

well it's just shy of a year. last year my launch xbox 360 died with a RRoD.
not long after i decieded to get a newer elite falcon chip one. last march.

this morning i turned it on to an E-74 error.
as far as i can tell it is covered and will be shipping it out later today or 1st thing tomorrow.

merry xmas to me.

what a pain.

I have a question which was slightly answered in a few posts before this one.....I'm currently waiting for my X360 Elite to be repaired and to be shipped back to me, (I sent it in two Mondays ago, arrived in Texas this past Monday and is currently being repaired)...Will I receive a refurbished one? and if so, will it be the same model? will it just have a new chip (probably not but it doesn't hurt to get your hopes up)? I guess what I'm asking is, what determines how your X360 get's repaired, and how long do refurbished units last? would it be better to just buy a new X360 (like and arcade or something since I already have the 120 GB HD). and how long does the repair process take?

That's a refurb date, not a manufacturing date. It's confusing obviously, because of the labelling.

I was under the impression that all repairs now come back with an Opus motherboard, which is falcon but without HDMI.

So, it's as Falcon as you're going to get.

being a falcon means squat.

my original xbox lasted way way longer then my falcon elite.

i'm just lucky it took a dump before my warrenty did.

my refubished unit has lasted longer then my Newer Elite Falcon.

That doesn't really mean a lot. My 2 360s have lasted longer than the two Wiis I've had break on me... of course, in terms of percentages it should never have happened that way, but sometimes it comes does to random luck.

Wrong.

I just got back my refurb from MS and it's a Xenon. (At least according to the voltage on the sticker, Mfg. date, and the way the power plug is keyed)

Kinda sucks. Glad I went out and bought that Jasper, now.

My 2nd 360 died yesterday. 3 red rings. Already have the order out for repair. Barely a year old(manufacturing date was somewhere around sept 2007, but bought it near the end of nov of that year).

Good thing i still have my backup 360, but that one is older and no hdmi.

My xbox just died. No video output, just audio. I tried different video cables, different hard drives and different televisions. No red lights either. Strange.

That sucks. Yea, power supply key would be the most revealing. That sucks. But, I'm in the same boat as you- got a jasper while waiting for repair, will just sell the repaired unit or something when it comes back.

If you're considering doing the same, you may want to get that discounted 20gb hdd from MS ($30, also has 3 free months of live Gold), they honor it even on Jaspers. Mine is in the mail as we speak.

Different TV or TV input? Doesn't sound broken.

I already have an extra 20GB from when I upgraded to the 120GB. So I'm just going to slap that on there.

However, rather than sell it I think I'm just going to keep it upstairs in the computer room and hook it up to my monitor's other input (I already have the VGA cable as well). That way I can play 360 games when the wife is watching sports in HD or something else on the big TV.

Not strange at all. Its the gpu completely fucking up or something and the 360 doesn't flash lights to tell you about it. The way you can tell if that is truly the problem (other than what you did) is to use the towel trick. It will work for some time and then checker up and go black again.

When you send the console back, do you have to send the HDD too? What happens to all your game saves etc?
No. Send nothing back with the console.

You keep all cables, HDD, MemCard, Custom faceplates.

Longer than a year since you bought it? No. Otherwise, yes.

It's about to go on a year. (2 more months)

So I have time to contact the support, do I just address the error and the code of it?

So I've got an odd story here... Last year my friend's 360 died but he didn't even get the RRoD just the DVD reader was screwed. He registered it online, called Microsoft etc but he sorta got the axe since it was a refurb he bought online. Turns out one year later, yesterday he calls me up and says Microsoft sent him a 360 just like that, he still had his old broken one too. Is there some kinda giveaway happening or is he just plain fuckin lucky?

Yes. Do yourself a favour and use the website though... no-one should choose to deal with their telephone people.

Thanks for the info, I remember dealing with the people over the phone on my first 360. Man that was something, getting my info wrong....

I tried putting my info in online for a repair, but the form doesn't like my 360's serial number for some reason, looks like I'll be making that call to MS, always a joy.

I turned on my xbox this morning to find, for the first time, the dreaded RRoD. I've had my system since January '07 and only now am I getting this. So my question: what are my options and what will it likely cost me? Also, how do I keep my Hdd data in the process?

This is a 190+ page thread, so I'm hoping to get an informed response now instead of having to read the whole thing, you know.

Details:
A couple days ago the system froze on me in the middle of the XMB, and when it froze it did some kind of artifacting thing where there was a bunch of white squares on the screen (along with a constant beeeeep).

So this morning I noticed my XBL connection was gimped and not working for some reason. So in the process of resetting my 360 to see if that would bring it back, I got the artifacting again, same thing. BUT then when I manually reset it, this time it RRoD'd me. I hope this explanation helps.

And thanks in advance for your advice.

You get it repaired, it won't cost spit, and you prevent losing your Hdd data by not sending in your Hdd and then plug it into your new console. Might also be worthwhile making sure the thing is actually dead, they like to rise from their grave.

Anyways, I don't think I've been counted for my 2nd RRoD, so might as well post in here. Happened back in July, just sent it in Monday so I could beat the 3 year timeup.

I don't know who the fuck ya'll have been talking to, but I've called in to get my repair like 7 times total since July and blew it off for one reason or another and they were never anything but courteous. Also after the first once or twice I swear I've gotten non-Indian operators too! Either that or they've gotten scarily good at hiding themselves.

How fast is the repair time anyway? I'm hopelessly addicted to checking the status on xbox.com. It's kind of annoying the repair stage doesn't have multiple stages though, it's been stuck there since Tuesday!

Thanks. Yeah, I requested a box since it should be a free repair.

Would be nice if they give me a 65nm model refurbed or something like that, but I'll take my old one fixed thanks. We'll see what happens.

Whelp, after surviving more than 3 years, my launch 360 has officially red ringed. Poor thing, I was cheering for it.

I ran out and bought a jasper arcade unit to replace it already, but I'm still going to attempt to screw around with it and see if there is some way to recover from it (doubtful). As expected, it came out of nowhere (was working flawlessly just today). I simply turned it on and it was dead.
