"My Xbox 360 Died and I Lived to tell the story" Official Thread

My brother's 360 is dying. The game I was playing crashed with artifacts and when I reboot the system the screen just went blue. It is as good as dead and this is his second 360 to die. His first was a launch system and this is a launch Elite. I always knew it was going to happen so I hardly played his 360.

Is anyone else having an issue using the website to set up a repair? Mass Effect 2 killed my 360 this morning, but the website can't process my request.

So I sent my 360 to the Dallas repair center last week. Within a day I get the "We received your console" e-mail and the "Your console is repaired" e-mail. Tracking info has this one coming out of Memphis.

I'm guessing that means I'm getting a replacement / refurb and not my original console repaired?

OH. MY. GOD.

I just connected my 360 to a power source again, and to my TV (it has been dead for over a year) and BAM, it works! What the hell? Did not try anything at all and BOOM. Great fucking stuff!

Still, this 360 is so old it doesn't have an HDMI output, and I switched to HDTV about a year ago, so I have to use component cables?

Are they pricey? Is there a lot of difference compared to HDMI (my PS3 is connected through HDMI)? Can I wipe the 360's memory clean?

Also, I forgot how much noise it makes. DAMN! Like a jet plane taking off!

EDIT: Never mind! It RRoD'ed again :lol

*sigh*
I'm back in the club! My elite (manufactured April 2, 2008) has been summoned by the red rings in the sky. Tried to get it to work on via HDMI, and VGA. RROD every time. So frustrating... I know others have had it worse though.... I've lost count now... this is the third or fourth time I've sent one in now... :/

I am on my 11th Xbox 360 - and 3rd Elite. If I start to tell my story, it would take days, if not weeks to finish.

If it wasn't for Xbox Live!

My 3rd 360 just died loading the BF Bad Company demo. Demo locked up, the 360 green screened and now boots to the 3 red lights of doom. This one lasted a little over 2 years.

my friend asked how to fix this in his facebook status:

"I'm getting the xbox screen (white & green) with MW2. I've wiped it off, let the XB360 cool down, and even tried a disc doctor. "

so my green halo 3 xbox is about to say goodbye.. I put in modern warfare 2 today only to have black lines running threw the sky and all over the place. checked a few more games and they have the same problems black lines running threw some sections of the graphics.

I am not an expert on these things but isnt this a prelude to red rings?

More likely to end in E74 (1 red light)... but yeah, it's going to die at some point.

this is what I figured!

I have a few questions though: I called xbox support last night and explained I had graphics issues but the dashboard still worked and netflix was fine (its only in games) he told me that my warranty expired in sept 2008 and it would cost me $120 to have the repair done and extend the warranty a year.

my question is if I get 1 red light, does that then extend the warranty and they will fix it for free?

so i was playing this (notice my GPU starting to crap out on the top of the screen)

and then I got this

so my fiancee got me this since I had to move my 360 to my desk to play ME2 and I blamed my e74 on moving the stupid thing lol so MGS PeaceWalker demo & tons of PSone classics until my elite comes back...oh and a big screw you to bioware for locking down DLC to internet connections only, cant even play my ME2 save game on my buddies 360 since he is internet-less

My Jasper Elite from August 2009 runs like a champ. 30h Forza, 100h MW2 or 30h ME1 are no problem for it.

But I should say, that I'll install every game on the HDD - so much better.

yea when I just had graphic glitches it was $100, when you get E74 or 3 red rings its covered under the 3 year warranty

xbox elite #4 died during Mass Effect 2 session last night. bought July 07 orignally and spent an hour on the phone with customer service explaining that it hasnt been 3 years, so its still covered under warranty. /facepalm

well that makes me feel better! do I just continue to play with the graphic issues until it finally e74's on me?

sigh, playing MW2 today and all of a sudden the graphics had some tiny black lines (at first thought I got EMP'd, lol). Backed out to the find a game menu, everything looked fine. Got back in another lobby, as soon as the game started up, the graphics went bad again. Turned off the xbox, tried to turn it back on, got the E74 message.

Bought it in Nov '07. Sending back tomorrow, hopefully it won't take too long to get back. And I'm off work all this week, now I have nothing to play :(

Mine did the exact same thing as yours, took about 2 weeks to finally E74.

OK so my 360 has been dead for a while, its a launch 360 date 2005-10-17. Juts aking but is there anyway i can get this fixed without paying? I really should have rang them up but being an import console i never bothered.

But now my brothers died on him November last year. He is only 10 years old and wants me to try to fix it. Its an old console, dated 2006-11-15, but he bought it in 2008. I rang them last year and the girl on the phone was a cow and because i was ringing from work, and couldnt troubleshoot it didnt want to know me until i could. I mean it does not fucking work, all you get is 3 Red Rings!

So anyway, mine is probably gone, but what about my brothers? I rang them up now 2 times in 3 hours and there systems are updating or some crap so they cant do anything, but will they fix his console without a recipt? I mean, its only what 3 months out of date according to its manufature date, and as i said was bought in March 2008. Anything i should say to them? Also any help with my launch one or am i screwed?

I can't really see any way that's going to happen unless you're able to provide them with a receipt. It's amazing that the machine is so old given when it was bought. Very unlucky.

Yeah it is unlucky! But the good news is they agreed to repair it for him! So kudos to MS. I just told them the situation and all and the lady on the phone was awesome. I guess sometimes you get idiots and sometimes not. She knew it was probably just old stock and was cool about it.

Although I think it helped that i had tried last year when it was in warranty but as i said they stuffed me around. Because it still had everything on the computer about when i last rang and all my details, so she knew i was not bullshitting. Anyway i have a question. She said i would get an email within 24 hours. How long does this usually take as i have yet to recieve one. It shows this on the support website:

Repair order submitted - We have received your repair order and it is in the queue to be processed.

Is this because i am waiting on the email?

Anyway glad i rang last year otherwise i would probably have left my brother without his 360 :lol

Also MY 360. Its a US model. 90% of my games are from the US and are not region free. If i pay the $150 to repair it, as its NOT covered by warranty, will i get another US machine back, or will it be PAL? And if so is it likely to be a newer model? I dont want to spend the cash when i can buy one new for almost that price.

Sorry... i have to vent

FUCKKKKKKKKKKKKKK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

FUCKKKKKKKKKKKKKK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So doing some work... take a break play some StreetFighter.

Back to work... Postman honks the horn... Yay Bioshock 2 SE.

Finish work... turn on 360 BAM! red ring of death. (i was just fucking on it)

This is my 4th rrod... shit is getting old.

Has anyone demanded a new 360 from microsoft instead of there old one getting repaired and got it?

Just trying to get a little pre-emptive knowledge here. I got an NTSC-J 360 so if my box red rings/e74's can I get them to send me back my same unit? I don't want them to send me back a US 360 and have all but two of my 360 games become useless.

Well I got my latest refurb today. It has a nice gash down the top. Now I know we don't sit there at stare at the top of consoles while playing games, but I do take pride in taking care of my shit.... at least the damn thing works... for now. :/

For what it's worth, I've sent in four boxes now... I've never gotten the same one back, though they generally give you the same version you currently have. I'd tell you to call them, but that is torture in itself.

Goddammit

Why? Why did you have to die RIGHT BEFORE THE FINAL LEVEL OF DANTE'S INFERNO?!

*sigh*

I'm gonna call MS about it tomorrow. I'd do it online right now, but MS says my warranty expired, but I still have 5 months left before it does so, so I need to call them so I don't have to pay.

It's somewhat depressing, but I can live with it. What I CAN'T live with is the fear that it'll break again and often because it's refurbished. This is my first RRoD, so, uh, 'experienced' users, how long do refurbs typically last?

Well guys, I finally got the red ring. I have an older model, according to something I read about the serial number it is from early 2006. Just when I have some free time to jump back into mass effect 2, i turn it on and the smacked by the ring. I'm assuming with no receipt there isn't a chance in hell they will replace it for free. And I don't have 100 bucks to plunk down on a repair.

I've been looking online at different "fixes" for this issue (error code 0020, according to the eject/sync button thing).

I'm going to give the towel trick thing a shot I think. Any risks associated with that? You know, like fucking my xbox up more? What are my other options if I'm well out of warranty?

Just suffered the unnamed video output issue. Red saturation and weird ghosting-type lines appeared on the entire video signal about 5 minutes after turning my system on. I then powered it down and back on to see if that would fix it, only to be greeted with a "No video output" message on my monitor.

I've had this system since 2006. I'm going to need to pay for repairs, aren't I?

Google the "x-clamp" fix. Don't know how much it costs, but it has to be cheaper than $100.00. I'm going to try that whenever mine goes out of warranty.

Well my launch 360 just got the RROD. Do you all think I should get it repaired for $100 or fork over another $200 and buy a new system?

Well, if you get a new one at $200, you can sell one of the HDD's to make up some of the cost, plus you'll have another 3 year warranty against the RROD. I'm on my fifth system, others have had worse... I'd go with a new one. Maybe x-clamp this one (if that works) and keep it, or sell it.

I can finally join this party. 360 died today. Was starting my hard run for Bayonetta. Game froze up. I turned 360 off and then turned back on. This time 360 freezed on the startup splash screen. Turned off and on again. Bam! I got the lovely red ring. Kind of wished the 360 died 2 months ago when I still had warranty. Now to decide if I want to repair for 100, buy new one for 200, or just give up.

They are repairing more these days. At least mine has been running solid for over 15 months since it was repaired without a hitch.

(now watch me jinx it)

Whee... my first red ring. It's a Falcon Elite. If I want to just want to buy a new console and skip the warranty stuff, will my DLC and saves carry over if I just buy an Arcade and swap out the hard drive?

My 360 just kicked the bucket, it seems. I'm getting white dots across the screen. Sound works and there are no error messages. It's out of warranty so I'd like to try and fix it myself, since there's nothing to lose. Anyone know if this is fixable?

Choice 2 or 3 are probably your best options. If you pay for the repair you're just going to get stuck in an endless cycle of refurbs that will likely RRoD again within a year.

I was in the middle of playing Mass Effect 2 when the system crashed. When I restarted it, clashed again at the opening animation. I tried it a few more times but the same thing happened. I took a picture of it see if anyone knew what the fuck is going on.

2nd RRoD, about 2 hours out from finishing ME2 :(

Question about DRM: I had some stuff from XBLA (most notably got Shadow Complex when it was on sale a month or so ago), will that stuff transfer to a new Arcade without any extra work?

Hmm depends. Since it's a launch 360 it doesn't have HDMI.

HDMI makes a difference (not a huge difference though) when playig on an HDTV, so that's a plus. If you don't play on an HDTV, consider this worthless info :D.

And like lord Helmet said, the warranty will be renewed and new 360 models are way more thrustworthy.

If that's worth 100$ to you, go for it.

You'd have to transfer your game licenses via the xbox.com website and then re-download everything via your download history for all your DLC/arcade games/etc. to work on your new 360.

What's this like #13 or 14? Someone find my old posts and confirm because I'm not keeping count at this point. I should have been. Would make nice evidence for a lawsuit.

My brother's Elite error'ed GPU died on him. saw that during L4D2 white checkered pattern appeared. black lines across the screen playing COD:WaW and white spots on dashboard. restarted and E74 appeared.

He had it since Christmas 08.

Just got my brothers 360 back and its a build date 2009-07-27. Thats pretty cool considering it was an early 06 model before. Hoping it does not fuck up again.

I have a question though, ho does the warranty go? Like he only had a year left on the other console, is there just a year left with this one? Or does it restart?

So I turn on my 360 to play MW2 and I notice that while I am playing blue "static" starts to appear. I turn the console off and then turn it on again and the problem is gone. This happened last year when I played Arkham Asylum whenever it was released and was solved by the same solution. Should I prepare for the worst?

Hey guys, can someone shed a light on my problem? I'm getting general hardware failure errors quite often when I try to boot-up my Xbox 360 but when it manages to boot-up it works flawlessly. I've played several hours of Halo 3 online and watched a movie, all without any hiccups. I've downloaded the Just Cause 2 demo and I'm about to try it out. The only time I've gotten an RROD when playing a game is after Toy Soldiers froze and I had to restart my console. But I can't seem to replicate the error with a game.

So... I guess my Xbox 360 is dying. I have one month before my 3 year RROD plan ends. Should I towel this sucker?

Send it now. You will have it back in time for Alan Wake.
Yeah I'm thinking of doing that but what if I send it in and they boot it up and get no RROD?

Because I've just played the Just Cause 2 demo, restarted system, booted up Bad Company 2 and it worked perfectly.

I hope they're not that shallow when checking the system for errors.
