"My Xbox 360 Died and I Lived to tell the story" Official Thread

My Elite E74'd two weeks ago, and it was a Falcon model (built in March 08). Got it back on Monday and managed to trade it in for a 250GB FF13 360.

I am astounded how cool it runs compared to a Falcon, and it's very heartening to read that all Jasper failures were PSU related. :)

My second 360 red ringed yesterday; the warranty expired the 28th of last month. Any chance they will fix it for free even though it is past expiration?

Ok, my 360 died! It boots up but I get no display....it worked a few minutes before but every thing was like purple! So I restarted it and now nothing! No red ring though.

I submitted for repair as a RR....should I, ya know, make it RR?

I bought it sep '07 incase anyone was wondering...

So, my 360 just died recently (RRoD). I'm not really interested into putting any money into getting it fixed (unless that can be done for really cheap/free). Anyways, how are you supposed to dispense with these things? I figure I'll keep the HDD and cables but I don't know what to do with the system itself. Is it worth anything or should I just trash it?

It's worth something.

Sigh...I think my 360 died this week. It was an old one(no HDMI). I got it from my brother-in-law last year. I had almost no problems with it. The dvd tray gives me some trouble but I can get it open. And I can count on one hand how many times it has locked up.

I started getting red rings last week. After multiple reboots, it finally worked. Got red rings Sunday and I got it to work. This morning the same thing, and the damn thing won't come on. I think this is RIP for this system. I just finished disc one of FFXIII:(

Got a gaming PC around late 2006 early 2007. Upgraded for more POWAH! during summer of 2007. Xbox 360 redringed, bought it 4 months after launch. Got if fixed and kicked it to the curb for a big pile of DS games and shiny DS Lite.

My PC still runs great, though aging as most do because of upped graphics requirements. I have a PS3 now and tons of games for it.

I miss not being able to play Tales of Vesperia and Shadow Complex, but i'll survive.

So, can anybody give me some advice on my options right now. I know that I can send it for repair, but that would cost $100 and that there is a decent chance it RR's again. Do they have a warranty on the repair? I could also buy a new one. Now, do new Xbox's have this problem? I also thought about buying it used, but i know that can be dicey.

Call MS up and complain, they'll probably fix it for free(even if it's old).

So my refurbished GameStop 360 just stopped working. No errors or anything of the sort, it just won't read games anymore. Tried everything I have and it always says Reading... Open Tray. So glad I got the year warranty, as this will be the second time I've had to get a replacement from them. I suppose its more convenient than waiting for MS to fix it and send it back.

It is strange though, because I played for 2 or 3 hours last night and experienced nothing out of the ordinary. Now 12 hours later its a goner.

I just picked up my 3rd 360 last night. Got the Halo/Forza bundle.

1st one had a bad disc drive, so I sent it to MS and they sent me a whole new system.

2nd one the video went out. Since it was no longer under warranty I couldn't send it in.

Now i'm the proud owner of an Elite. Not sure what to do with so much space.

Unbelievable. Took my 360 to GameStop and got another refurb w/ the warranty. I just tried to load up a game at my buddy's house.. same problem as the one I just returned. Reading.. Open Tray. I'm pretty sure they just stick broken 360's in boxes and sell them.

It was shady how the guy told me I'd need a new(read: $20) warranty now that I'd used mine once. I neglected to tell him that the first time one of their refurb's went out I used the original warranty and got a new one, for fear that he would say it was no longer valid, as the dude just re-issued the warranty - no charge. Any former employees know what's up?

Either way, I'm going back tomorrow to get another.. maybe if I bitch hard enough he'll give me an arcade. Wish me luck boys.

I don't think I ever posted it, but for the record, my oft-repaired launch 360 is all dead now (as opposed to mostly dead). I bought a replacement about a month ago.

My Xbox just started up locking up randomly, sometimes showing graphical glitches. I bought it back in August 2007, so it's out of waranty. Should I force it to red ring? And if so what's the best way? Or are we not allowed to discuss such tactics?

edit: nevermind, it just red ringed by itself.

My launch 360, the only one I've ever owned, finally passed away this afternoon. Time of death: 5:27 PM EST.

I went to play some MW2 the other day and it froze around five minutes into my first game. Rebooted, got into another game, and it froze within seconds. Next reboot, got three red lights. I waited a few minutes, and started it up again, and was able to play Peggle for about a half-hour with no problems. At that point, I had to go out, so I figured I'd just give it a try again later. Just a while ago, I turned it on to see what it was gonna do this time around, and I couldn't even get to the dashboard without a freeze. After five lock-ups at the Xbox splash screen, it red-ringed again. Dead, for sure.

The Xball even SHATTERED!

It sucks, and it's the only video game hardware that's ever died on me, but I got almost four-and-a-half years out of the thing — a LOT more than most people with launch units. I'm not really surprised it chose to die now, as it got the most use of its life in the last few months due to MW2. I don't see any point in trying to get it repaired. I'll just take my chances with a Jasper (I want the HDMI output anyway).

It sucks that I'm so pathetically broke right now, otherwise I'd go out and buy an Arcade unit today. Gonna miss having that platinum disc drive swagger, though. :(

I've had 5 360's die on me(3 Pro's, and 1 Arcade, 1 Elite)

The longest one(Arcade), lasted close to 9 months.
The shortest one(Elite, lol), lasted 1 month.

Right now I've got a refurbed Elite and its starting to act wonky again :(.

Here's hoping my new PS3 slim doesn't give me any guff.

my first 360 an elite from 9/9/07 just crashed while playing perfect dark and is now red ringed. filled out the repair request form on xbox.com and waiting in queue or whatever...

couple questions:

-what models are they sending people back? (jasper, falcon, etc) my elite has the quiet version of the fans/drive and i dont want a jet engine when it comes back.

-for canadians how long are repair times?

fuck now i have nothing to do... might as well masturbate.

I have a launch console and this happened to me recently. I still don't get a red light or anything of that nature, just freezes after a few seconds of being on with artifacts everywhere.

I don't know if it's an issue I can fix on my own or if I should just send it to MS. :(

Welp, I'm officially in the club. Was playing Fallout and the screen went all snowy. Saved the game from memory and tried to go to dash but no dice. Restarted and got a lovely E74 with the lower right part of the ring red. I really hoped we we wouldn't have this problem since it was a newer one. I think I ascertained at one point that it was a Jasper but don't remember (or care enough atm to find out) how to check.

Microsoft is requiring you to provide your own coffin now right? Do I need to send cables and all that, or just the box itself?

My friend and I just played Halo 3 for about 5 minutes when suddenly the xbox360 froze. We turned it off and on again but it is not working anymore. To clarify, there was no RRoD when it froze and after turning it on only the center light (power button) lights up but no one of the quarter rings. Also there is no picture on the TV.
In addition, since about half a year his xbox was not working - let's say: at its best. When not hosting a Halo ODST firefight game (that is to say entering one as a client) for LAN party there was about a1 second lag on his console (sometimes also FPS very low). When playing Mass Effect 2 there were a lot of loadings while walking around (in comparison to me) and in the videos the people often switched their position instantly.

He bought his one back in 2006 (one of the first Elite models). About a year ago he changed the case of his xbox. Could this have something to do with it?

So, do we have to go buy a new one tomorrow?

Thanks

I figure this is as good a place to ask as any. Is it worth getting a 360 if I have no intention of taking it online? I really just want to play the new Splinter Cell and Portal 2 (No the PC versions are not an option).

they are lots of single player only games, so yeah.

I'm on my 5th Xbox.

First one spun the discs in the tray.
Second one began to lock up during loading screens
Third one began to lock up during gameplay
Fourth one began to lock up during gameplay and finally RROD'd.
On my 5th one now...

The funniest thing is that my 360 is my secondary system, It only comes on to play MS exclusives... My PS3 sees the most action. Launch day 60 gig. Not a single problem.

Mine is starting to read games as DVDs. Should I be worried? Thank god I still have 1 year of warranty.
Are you getting something along the lines of "put this inside a 360 to play"? If so, yeah, that's cause for concern. It might soon stop playing them for good and you'll have to send her off for repairs. :(

Yeah, this is exactly what I'm getting :(. Oh well, I guess she had a good run (2 years 1/2 now). I now have an excuse to get the slim, lol.

Anyone know what the turn around is now a days?

edit: When I went to UPS to have it boxed up the lady at the counter told me the price right when I walked in. Apparently they get a lot of them in :lol

double edit: Do they usually give you the same xbox back?

So... my 360 is dead. Well, the GPU is dead cause there is no video/audio yet it "runs" and it hasn't given me RROD. Fuck! Both my PS3 and 360 died in a span of 1 hour!! :(

Question: Is this covered in 3 year warranty?

GAF, why the fuck does my xbox 360 sound like a goddamn air conditioning unit? Serious. I put in Dragon Age: Awakenings to play it and the noise is incessant. I'm burning it to the hard drive right now so I don't have to listen to that shit but really, is the disk drive going out on me? It wasn't like this a few days ago, then again I mainly put all my games onto my hard drive so it's not as loud.

Finally joining this club. I was watching Arrested Development on Netflix when the 360 froze. Restarted and it kept freezing at startup with a popping sound. Tried unplugging everything and this time I got the three rings. Only every third time gives me rings. Other times it freezes or doesn't send a signal at all (tv is waiting for hdmi info).

I got this December 2007. It was the 20 gig, HDMI, newest chip set (falcon?).

Well, my GF's co-worker says we can take ours in to the Microsoft store in Scottsdale and have it repaired while we wait, so I'll report back on that tomorrow if anyone's curious.

I'm not sure what's going, I wonder if anybody can help me.

My XBOX360 turns on but the green lights won't turn on, and the green lights on the controller are all lit up. I try to do anything on the 360 and it won't budge. It doesn't start up. I can hear the disc rotating but nothing after this point.

Any ideas what it could be?

If my 360 breaks, I'm never buying another one ever again -.-;

Was playing the other day and noticed that the left analog "click" button isnt working anymore on my controller. Is that a commom issue?

So, my 360 stopped wanting to read discs about 2 months ago. I had to hit the top of my box to get discs to start, but even then, it still took a couple tries for the disc to actually start working.

About 3 days ago my box finally got the RROD. I actually celebrated because it means I get to have it repaired for free. Hopefully I'll get my box before the Halo: Reach Beta comes out.

Welp, my Australian launch unit console just RROD'd. And the 3 year warranty ran out sometime last year...

I'm tempted to pop open the case and give it a shot myself at fixing it. But it might be smarter to have it sent off to be fixed and just take the repair costs, which are going to be less than buying a new console which is probably going to be the only other way out.

What are people's experiences with getting RROD consoles repaired past the three year warranty? It's been in service once before for a two red light error, so I'm wondering if that might have added another warranty on top of it? Though the xbox.com website says that the unit's warranty IS out.

Sadly, this isn't my only console to break on me today. Talk about bad luck. :(

got the email saying my console is being shipped back. compared the serial number with the one i sent in and im getting back and even older unit. thanks microsoft! :(

when this one breaks, and we all know it's guaranteed to, im going to shit in the box before sending it back.

Im in Aus and got my friends Xbox back today (I was getting repaired for him, as it broke when I was borrowing it). He reckons he bought it well over three years ago and I wasn't charged to get it repaired, even though the website said the warranty was expired.

I'm a bit disappointed they sent another 1st gen unit back, it's just as noisy as before and bound to break again :(

Oh, and my 60gig PS3 YLODed on me last week too, my third PS3. Replaced it with a Slim.

launch 360 died 3 months after purchase first case of RROD

2nd unit lasted for 8 months before the RROD

3rd unit was DOA on arrival from MSFT

4th unit which I was told was a jasper unit lasted up until about 5 days ago RROD. My daugther and son wanted to play some lego star wars and "you're in the movies"

Microsoft wants to charge me 150.00 to repair since it's out of warranty and unless the supervisor that's supposed to be calling me can tell me some good news i.e free repair My kids will be playing the ps3 till the next generation.

Blah. Went to MS store. Was told they don't repair units, but they'll send it back for me...So I guess I saved myself the hassle of finding a box and mailing it. Yaaay.

And now we play the waiting game.

So I just got the flashing 2 red lights while playing MW2 and my console shut down. The interwebs tell me this is due to overheating. Is it safe to assume I'm on way to a RROD in the near future? I'm coming up on 3 years in August.

Sadly I think so, however it all depends on you luck.

Anyway, welcome to the club :lol

RROD confirmed. No graphic glitches or anything. Just went to a black screen mid-game. Reset the 'Box and there it was.

Help me out GAF. Playing Mass Effect 2 at the moment on an Elite system. About a couple or so minutes in the screen darkens - kind of like a screensaver but with odd graphical glitches - and then it goes black. There's still sound, but no picture... Is it about to go?

edit - had it for about two years.
