Help me out GAF. Playing Mass Effect 2 at the moment on an Elite system. About a couple or so minutes in the screen darkens - kind of like a screensaver but with odd graphical glitches - and then it goes black. There's still sound, but no picture... Is it about to go?

edit - had it for about two years.

..and I read this as I was about to pop ME2 into my elite system. Yipes, just yipes.

It was playing fine from the time I got it (around the beginning of March) up until a couple hours ago. Granted, my sister keeps the game with her at college half of the time. Just got it back this week, played once Monday night, and then again this morning.

Fake edit - I think it's about to go. It's doing it with Forza 3 as well.

Did you leave it turned off for a while and try turning it back on? If not do that and let us know.

However, you don't normally get any kind of technical errors like that, only the occasional 360 freezing issues or normal, anything beyond that might be a problem.

After getting the nerve to try to play ME2 I put it in the tray and turned on mah 360.. it says 'Play DVD'

FUUUUUUUUUUUU

I loaded it and it got stuck on the Xbox 360 splash thingy, so I restart and it loads up fine. ME2 played with no glitches or anything out of the norm.. *wipes brow for now*

My 360 died today. :( 7th time. I turned it on to play some FFXIII and it froze up on the opening screen, I turned it off and back on and got the 3 red lights. Sucks that it is out of warranty now.

Let it rest all night and tried again just a couple minutes ago. Now I'm not getting any picture at all... I'm still getting sound but no picture.

anyone know where you can buy the xbox oem nidec fans that ships to canada?

i got my xbox back yesterday and sure enough not only is it older than the one i sent in but it has dc brushless fans. fucking fans are so goddamn loud.

Okay this is probably a long shot but i have no idea. I recently sent my brothers 360 in for repair and its great. But i now want mine repaired. However i have a USA machine. So i was wondering, will MS send my machine back (they didnt send my brothers back) and if not will it be a USA machine, even though i live in Australia?

So I did this "8 penny fix" I kept reading about on my launch (2005) 360 a few days ago and so far it hasnt RROD lol. It was RROD'ing every other day before doing the penny fix.(revived each time by doing towel trick).

gotta love it.

Im hoping I live to tell the story but my Elite just died last week with RROD and I immediately sent it off to MS to get fixed but since that time there hasnt been any update of its status on MS's repair site or the UPSs tracker so I am bit concerned and I was really hoping to get it back by the end of the month so I could play some RB2 when my old roommates come visit. also for RDR and Alan Wake.

Anyone else experience substantial lag time between sending their Xbox in and getting updates on the UPS tracker and MS site? I know from lots of UPS experience that its mostly up to date and accurate but on occasion theres a real delay in info or none at all, but Im still a bit concerned my Xbox is lost to the world.

Same issue here. I dropped mine off last Thursday and tracking it via UPS still only shows "Billing Information Received". Seems an odd coincidence, as you stated UPS is generally fairly reliable. So you're not alone!

Knowing someone else is in the exact same position has me feeling about 1% better, hopefully we both arent screwed and are just unlucky when it comes to tracking.

i had shipping like that before, sometimes it would say my package was still sorting at the ups warehouse even though i had it im my hands.

the microsoft site is useless to track your xbox. mine never changed from repair pending until after i got an email saying my replacement was sent back.

I'm sick of having my 360 sporadically overheat, so i'm gonna pick up a new arcade. Are there any deals going on right now where I can pick up a unit for less than $200, or for $200 with some kind of incentive like a giftcard?

Also, I should be wanting a unit with a Jasper motherboard correct? How do I verify this? Should any unit I buy come with the correct motherboard at this point, since it's been awhile since its introduction?

Sending in my box for a second time. First one RROD late last year. The replacement they sent me had a somewhat loose HDMI port. Was pretty pissed at how they could send out a bad unit as a replacement, but as long as no one touched it, the HDMI worked fine.

Up until this past week. The video is now going in/out/in/out etc. So damned annoying. Damn thing is going back out tomorrow and we'll see what piece of shit they send me back.

Sorry for the rant. Just really pissed at how I take really good care of my things, it RROD's and I get some abused piece of junk that someone didn't take care of and can't even hold an HDMI cable. Ah!

So unfortunately, its my first time posting in this thread (had reported two ps3's already); the victim is a Halo 3 system from 2007. It was lightly used through these years, but apparently, it was just a matter of time until this happened....

I have however, a situation, since this 360 was won in a Walmart videogame competition and I was not given a receipt (even though I asked for one, since RROD was well known by that time).

There is definite proof that the system is within warranty, since this particular console was made starting in sept. 2007, but I have a feeling that not having a receipt is going to be a major issue....

I'll have a go of it tomorrow, but if anyone has any advice or pointers on how to get this resolved, I'd appreciate them.

You got a RROD? Just go to the Xbox site (here, I think) and type in the serial number of your console. Don't need a receipt, it's all a fairly automated process.

Thanks for the advice, I just tried online and it really was simple and straightforward; props to microsoft on that.
I had just heard about people having to argue with the service reps so much that I though it had to be done by phone

Well its been two business weeks since I sent my Xbox in and I still dont have one bit of confirmation that my Xbox has been shipped, received, sent back or anything. UPS tracking still only says its received the billing info. Im guessing I should call someone up to see what the hell is going on. And here I thought it was a nice smooth and simple process from the ease at which I was able to report my RROD and get a shipping label for MS to fix it for free. You get what you pay for I guess.

My 3rd 360 is starting to freeze up a lot. Also getting those artifacts(blocky screen).
Does that mean it's on it's way to RROD? My last 2 just died instantly. I'd almost rather have that than this slow death.

Mine started with that. Then onto green and purple pixels out of no where.. and then BAM! Error 74. Was over the year warranty too, if I'm not mistaken the RROD is the only thing covered under the 3 year warranty.

Pretty sure if you get E74 you can towel trick it enough times to eventually get the RROD. From what I understand anyway.

I think I already know the answer...

My nephew's 360 just broke (RRoD) and it's outside the 3 year warranty period. Tried the site but it said that he'd have to call and deal with customer services for the repair... who I assume will want some cash to fix it, making an arcade a much better bet.

I assume there's nothing else he can try?

(It's especially annoying as I'm convinced the slim 360 will be coming soon enough)

Amazing, MS doesnt have my Xbox and the UPS store I dropped it off at said they dont have it, so Im gonna have to call up UPS corp to see if they can figure out where it is, but likely Im screwed and I didnt put any insurance on it so its likely no one is going to be reimbursing me for the loss.

So with that whats the cheapest Xbox I can buy with the best chance of not breaking on me so I never have to bother with this shit again?

It only took me one reboot after that happened.

Likewise. Got the 2 lights, let it sit overnight, turned it on the next day and had RROD within an hour. Absolutely no symptoms or issues of overheating or ANYTHING prior to that.

Oh wow that is bad if true, I am sorry.

One question though. The xbox support site does not show me the repair status of my console and if I search with the process/repair number nothing can be found. Is there something wrong or do I need to wait until my Xbox has arrived at the repair center?

The fan in my PSU for my Elite (Falcon) seems to of died but it still seems to be working fine albeit fairly hot, I left on all last night on the Halo 3 title screen and no problems, tbh I thought my system sounded alot quieter and I guess now I know why, my system is outside of the standard 1 year warranty so I guess my PSU is not covered?, anyone else had this problem and do you think it'll be safe to keep using the PSU like this?

I purchased a new Arcade unit less than 24 hours ago. I just booted up Just Cause 2, and when I got into the game, it was running at roughly 10-15 frames per second and there was all kinds of banding and artifacting going on. This was only in game, not in the menus or map screens. Restarting the game fixed the problem. Should I just return this thing to Best Buy now? Or was this a one off occurrence?

I'm hesitant to say it was the Xbox, since i've seen artifacting somewhat similar to this before, but it never affected the framerate in any way.

If it is new, return it for another one just to be on the safe side. You can never be too careful when it comes to this system.

Ugh, yeah, I figured that would be the best course of action regardless. I assume I can just take it back and exchange it, and not have to go through MS?

As long as you have your receipt and the system packed up in its original packaging, I don't think you will have too much problems.

Thanks.

Hmmmm. Does the penny trick really work?

Most of the time, yes.

EDIT: After reading the post below, I think I should mention that the penny fix is a "temporary" solution. How much longer it'll keep your 360 alive is basically random, but i've heard of people keeping their unti alive for 1 yr+ using the penny trick.

As a follow up to this, I just took my Xbox down to Best Buy to exchange it. They tell me they won't do that unless they can see the problem themselves. So someone takes it and plays for a few minutes, and the problem doesn't occur, so they won't do anything about it.

Do I have any options here? It's happened twice now in two different games since I purchased the thing less than 48 hours ago.

I sold one of my 360s to a co-worker fairly cheap. Had it for 2 years, it gave me issues now and again on boot-up, but it always started up. Even long play sessions didn't cause any problems. Of course I explained the quirks with the system before selling it so it was well known.

So getting to the point of the story, co-worker takes it home and it calls me within an hour telling me it's dead. I was thinking I hadn't moved in a long time and it could be moving it that shook something loose, but 2 things kind of irked me when I heard them. One, he set it vertical, I always kept it flat. Two he installed one of those intercooler kit things. Now of course he wants his money back. So I'm out a 360 and the money now. It could have been on it's way out, but I can't help thinking he basically killed it. Could what he did have killed it?

Sorry to bump the thread but any feed-back on the following?

Doubtful. There are so many variables at play.
I'd say it was on its way out before he added the inter cooler and stood it up vertically.

Speaking of standing and flat. I had both of my 360´s flat and both died albeit not beeing used THAT much (just look my gamerscore). Theoretically the flat position is better because of the air-suck-in. But everytime I see videos or pictures of 360´s they are standing. Is there any evidence that a flat 360 is less likely to rrod?

@ kpop100
I also think that everything could have caused that, I think you are out of luck here :(

I remember there was a comparison with thermal imaging of the 360 standing and flat. There was a difference but I don't think it was great.

I had my 360 die on me once flat, and once standing up... so 50/50? :lol
