I don't think you've seen the PSX version in a while. That screen is way too sharp to be the original 1994 PSX port. It is the emulated arcade version, just like Tekken 1-3 on Tekken 5 were arcade emulations.

PSX Original Release:
ManaByte, yes I have. what you posted is the Arcade, but running under VivaNonno emulation on PC, which makes it looks slightly different, and less sharp than the arcade. I know that for a fact because of the texture filtering in that arcade shot. you can add filtering in VivaNonno, but the original arcade game had NO texture filtering at all.
the arcade Ridge Racer clearly whips the PS1 translation. especially when you see the 2 in motion. not as badly as Model 2 arcade Daytona obliterates the Saturn versions though.
Arcade System 22 Ridge Racer, 1993
*60 FPS
*High Polygon. probably in the ~200,000 per second ballpark. System 22 is capable of 240,000 texture mapping polys/s with guaraud shading, lighting, z-buffering (no Z on PS1)
*640 x 480 interlaced - yes it was that high of a resolution. higher than Model 2 games
*32,000+ colors on screen.
*high res, hi color texture mapping
[if you have Next Generation magazine issue #1, you can see they have System 22 Arcade Ridge Racer specs in the Playstation RR preview.
Playstation Ridge Racer, 1994
*30 FPS
*low polygon. probably in the ~90,000 ballpark. no z-buffering.
*low resolution, probably 320 x 224 or something like that
*lower on screen color
*low res, low color textures
technically, the Playstation RR is probably 1/3 or 1/4 of the System 22 arcade game, graphically, and to my eyes it looks, at best, 1/2 as good. but this was good enough to get people to think that it was only a small downgrade from the arcade. 1/2 to 1/3 of the arcade game, technically is ALOT better than the first Saturn Daytona which was like 10% of the arcade. and Saturn Daytona CCE was maybe 20%.
now, the FAR superior Playstation Ridge Racer Hi-Spec from 1998 is probably technically ~50 to ~70 percent as much as the arcade, which makes it look pretty close (80 to 90 percent to the eyes) to the original 1993 arcade game. most of the big downgrades from the arcade in the original 1994 Playstation RR are put back into 1998 RR HiSpec. 60 FPS, high resolution, high color. much better shading and lighting. although even HiSpec does not have as high a polygon count or z-buffering of the arcade.
