This is not "the" camera(s). They are used to detect hazards. The better cameras take too long to send data for us to see it on this pass.

you know whats crazy the fact that when people celebrated curiosity's landing, it had already been sitting on the surface of mars for 12 minutes.

thats how far mars is from earth that even at light speed it takes that long.

Seriously ... the people in here going 256x256 need to realize how difficult the challenge of landing something like this was. This was a lot of years of work. I'm sure for a lot of people this was their life's project. The amount of things that could have gone wrong. It's just incredible.
