hey man you provoked! but ok i apologize.

but seriously China is awesome. i bet they will be leading space exploration efforts 30-50 years from now. can't wait. already learning a bit of their language.

We agree for sure, China is going to kick major ass in space exploration sooner then most people think.

yeah. i hope they will be as inclusive as NASA, letting other nations join in on projects.

overall i'm optimistic. space exploration shall unite us all. if it doesn't, nothing will..

Can't wait for that first shot of Mt. Sharp. Going to be badass, especially if they are near the base of it.

Very curious to see the landing location. Hope we get that in tomorrow's noon presser.

I'm fine with the shown nationalism, if the chinese go crazy with their space budget in the next 30 years as a response to the NASA effort. We know how nationalistic the chinese are.

I'm fine with nationalism when it actually helps improve its country. That rarely happens though.

It's a lot easier to say "I support our awesome troops - they're the best in the world!" than it is to actually increase veteran benefits and end wars and bring them home. Similarly, it's easier to praise NASA than increase its funding.

I'm really curious as to why Nasa didn't install something like 10 megapixel cameras on the rover, it wouldn't have added any weight nor would it require substantial amounts of power to run i think.

Because megapixels mean nothing. The lens and sensor are the important part.

Data size. Bandwidth is at a premium. They can either download lots of One Megepixel photos or just one 10 Megapixel in the same amount of time. It isn't needed. 10 Megapixel would be overkill.

Also. The camers on the Curiosity weren't bought at Best Buy. They have to be incredibly fault tolerant to extreme temperatures, etc. you have to stop expecting things on Mars to work like they do on Earth.

I don't think this is likely. China is not known for being international and inclusive; instead, they're known for being especially nationalistic and exclusive.

I'm not saying it's impossible, but I wouldn't get my hopes up that China will be better than the US in this regard -- they're likely to be much worse. Still, scientific progress is scientific progress, and I'll take exclusive nationalistic progress over no progress at all, if those are my only two options.

I can't imagine any one country going to some place like Mars though alone, some nations are going to have to step up to share the costs and responsibilities, so i hope that inclusion among nations like China happen.

To be fair to China, our Congress gave them the middle finger last year or the year before. I don't remember what the exact legislation was, but it basically said, "No, fuck you, China, we're not going to be working with you on Space stuff." It was just the most childish, nationalistic bullshit.

International space exproration effort! It would add up to something useful. Big projects are better than lots of small projects and duplication.

I doubt there will be another space race. Congress has given up on Nasa sadly.

they just need a swift kick in the ass. Right now we're all austerity and debt is too big and other shit. There's time enough to right that ship. Might not be tomorrow, but in a decade or two you never know.

Never discount the old guard being stirred up with Cold War fervor when China does a lunar flyby or landing. I could easily see NASA getting more funding in the future event of a successful Chinese mission to the Moon (provided Congress gets their act together and comes up with a credible long term deficit reduction plan next year).

Private companies aren't going to advance new frontier. They can barely get 62 miles up, very old frontier.

I suppose if private companies can make a shit load of money some CEO might try to some day though. I mean, if Mars has lot's of Iron and other minerals, i bet one day in the far future some company could set up a mining industry there.
