NBA 2k14 Next Gen : OMG Trailer

It's been a while, but I'm fairly confident on default sliders every year there are several major flaws, like all dunks or zero dunks, or shooting percentages just being way off for certain situations. etc. I'm not saying I need the key to perfect realism, which requires a ton of accounting for individual skill issues, but just always surprised by the fundamental flaws baked into the defaults that have to be accounted for via sliders.
Eh. I think they have to appeal to a wide audience. This means not making it so you easily get crushed if you're not playing the game of basketball perfectly. It would scare a lot of people away, and wouldn't be the huge seller that it is currently. In that sense, the defaults make sense in my mind. That's just a general feeling, I never really dig that deep into the sliders.

I definitely agree that it would be nice if they put a lot more time into preset sliders, like a "true sim" setting. Now that I think of it, that's pretty lame that they don't do this, considering the amount of long time fans they have.

Are slider settings downloadable from other users? I've never tried that.

so glad you were hammered for this comment. It offends me how lazy the 2k ports on PC are. Literally, the only available upgrade is anti-aliasing and resolution, the PC is just an afterthought for those assholes.

Deserved to be hammered for saying that. Looks almost identical to 2k13 but just plays more fluid.

NBA video-game fans: Is there a chance that any of these games will be even remotely realistic without serious slider customization? Why aren't the baseline sliders at least a decent set for new players let's say? And then when you get really good you tweak stuff (or even better just bump up the difficulty). Given the amount of work put into this, I'm always perplexed that if you play without tweaking the hell out of things (how exactly to do so no one can agree upon) there's stuff like people making 70% 3-pters, 90% of scores being dunks, or the opposite of those just things that are fundamentally and clearly broken regardless of idiosyncracies like player skill level. WHY?

You didn't play 2K14 yet, huh?

They've re-adjusted AI to lock down the paint. The game is almost too sim in paint protection.

Just saw the NBA2k14 trailer and I'd like to thank Visual Concepts for always pushing the envelope when they don't have to (look at EA). The same company that wow'd people with NBA 2K and NFL 2k on the Dreamcast still doing it strong in 2013 for yet another next gen transition. Best trailer I have seen in a long time. The trailer was just perfect. Perfect song, perfect selection of athletes and perfect time to show this now as the NBA season opener is coming up soon. My basketball fan dad even smiled watching this. He doesn't play games. It's that profound and I am that excited.

I hope it's a little less sim-like. I'm sure I just suck, but getting around defenders is fucking hard, man

Whoa, looks awesome. I am glad 2K got it right, mainly because, as a tennis fan, Top Spin is the best tennis game out there, and I literally cant wait to see Top Spin 5 looks, if this footage is anything to go by.

I don't know anything about sports, NBA, or basketball games. Couple questions:

1) If I want to start watching the NBA, would playing the game help me pick up on team/player/rules knowledge?

2) Are these games (either franchise) fun for the average non-sports fan games enthusiast? I wouldn't mind picking up the newest version if it's good beyond just playing your favorite teams and such.

1. Very much so. Basketball is relatively straight-forward but the game will always help out with the rules since you'll immediately know what went wrong in the game. Team and player knowledge will also go up since the game has a great presentation with the announcers talking about recent team moves, player accolades, etc. that makes you well versed in not only your team, but your opponent's team.

2. I think they're fun but it's hard to say coming from a basketball fan and someone that loved to play it in real life. To me, the fundamentals are so good in this that it doesn't matter if you're not attached to one team, it's just fun period and if you do a career with a custom player, you'll learn a lot about teams you had no interest in before even if you were a fan of the NBA since it's hard to know them all. The game plays well and rewards teamwork regardless of what you know about them and the game will tell you what each player is good at with the show skills option.

I think if you have any interest in basketball, it's a great game to check out because it does get you hyped and interested and it doesn't help that it's one of the prettiest games out there.

Thanks for the answer! I know this thread is for NBA 2k14, but are earlier versions or the Live series worth checking out? Definitely wouldn't mind getting this one though, it does look pretty damn good.

1) watch slam dunk anime. it's a story of a guy who doesn't know anything about basketball. the audience learns basketball with him. the guy might start out as annoying or clueless, but it's the best sports anime out there (and it's 15 years old).

2) no. games today have become so complicated. games from 5-10 years ago only have simple commands i.e. one button for a crossover, to shoot, etc. so simple answer is no. these games will be very enjoyable if there's full understanding of basketball.

EmptySpace was in the same boat. start with simpler older games, and watch slam dunk.
too bad dog missed out on some of the best bball players in their prime.

Number one is a huge yes, the more you play I promise you will learn rules and players/teams that when you turn on the tv and watch it you'll be pretty knowledgable. I was never really into basketball, still prefer football but ever since nba 2k1 on dreamcast Ive learned alot about the sport.

one of the only reasons i want a ps4 is this series

it's an incredible series but the pc version is always broke and they never patch it

1) Yes. Nitpicky issues aside, this is one of the most accurate and lovingly-crafted sport simulations ever made. The commentary has loads of dialogue recorded for every team and individual players on each team. You should brush up a little bit on basic basketball strategy before plunging in, but it'll teach you about that even.

2) I don't know if I can answer that since I love basketball, but the My Player mode is essentially an RPG mode where you earn skill points and increase your abilities as you see fit. It's really enjoyable and addictive from that perspective. But will you like the game if you're not already into basketball? Idk. It might get you into basketball, actually. It's just really well made.

Hip Hop Gamer's hype always makes me smile. :D

I lost it.

I haven't played Live in a long time so it's hard for me to say, but let's just say there's a reason I haven't bothered playing that series in a while. I tried all the demos each year and it always felt the same while being a lot less realistic, looking worse, and being buggier whereas 2K has impressed me with its authenticity and how they try to actually replicate the game. Even though Liva has been absent for a while, 2K continued to improve and refine their game and it shows compared to other sports games that get complacent when there's no competition.

Live always seemed to just play more arcade-style to me instead of 2K. 2K has its flaws but has been ahead for a long time now in terms of representing real basketball and it tries to eliminate the solo play and turn you into more of a team player that practices fundamentals over 1v1 street-ball. :D

Thinking about getting this as a visual showpiece but I've never played any of the basketball games before. I know the game, and play a little pickup in real life every once and a while, but am I in over my head with this?

I don't think you're over your head. Having knowledge of the sport translates well once you have the controls down. There's training camps in the game to help you learn the controls and there are drills to help you sharpen them. There's a bit of a learning curve as far as shot release timing is concerned, though.

Something bizarre... the gifs look goddamn amazing, but when I played the trailer on youtube it just looked meh... like a slightly improved ps3 version... and yes I had it on 1080p... strange... i hope it looks good when I get it... judging by the comments here I will.

Secondly I don't really agree with how this game looks 'next gen' - the lighting, the shaders have all been improved, but they seem to be using the PS3 models (with more or less the same number of polygons) and also all the animations are basically carried over too. There are things like when the player catches the basketball, its still janky cause of the transition and the player is not gripping the ball, its more like cupping the ball. I know I'm being picky... but I'm still seeing the PS3 game here with a PS4 skin over the top.

Either way - ill be getting it seeing as the last one I got was 2k11.

Idk how people say it looks like the ps3 because I sure as hell couldn't stand nba 2k on ps3, it looked terrible and is much worse than the 360 version. This looks thousands of times better, especially better than the ps3 version because that ps3 version was always the garbage version. Everyone is now round and natural not with retarded irregular triangle faces and arms. It's deffinetly using way more polygons.

Played FIFA on a PS4 demo pod and it was the same. With the default camera, you can barely tell the difference between that and the FIFA 14 on PC other than the celebrations and crap.

This looks like a genuine step up, hope it plays like one too.

I wasn't attempting to say that the game is going to be 30fps, only that the 30fps footage wasn't caused by the fact that it was being streamed by Youtube.

...but I will try out that double playback thing out for shits and giggles. lol

When I said Internet video, I didn't only mean youtube-- most sites (outside of gamersyde) only host 30FPS videos, and most publishers only give out 30FPS videos as well.

On the flip side..i just want to ball up and cry thinking about what a NFL2k14 would look like on a PS4/XBone

I don't even play NBA games and I'm looking forward to more gameplay footage. Hope they do a developer technical breakdown of all the little details and get into the nitty-gritty of it all. Great stuff so far, 2K.
