NBA draft pick Thon Maker likely to be 4-5 years older than he is officially listed

I feel bad for this dude. Everything he went through and then he gets caught up with some really shady dudes looking to profit off his talent.

Yea but its not like he sucked or anything, he still avg 22 and 13 and 4 blocks, those are better numbers then a lot of guys that went to the NBA out of HS.

Yes he has lest growth to mature physically, but he still can get better as a player, one thing they said about him is how hard he works at it on wanting to get better, and also like I said he's 7'1 lol

Four years is a pretty big deal at that age. There are countless 22-year-old college players that could look amazing if they got to go back and play against teenagers who are still developing.

It's one of the reasons smart draft models are skeptical of prospects that don't perform until their junior or senior year of college when they have the age and experience advantage. They will never have that sort of advantage in the NBA. Maker's alleged situation is the same, except it's not even against college players, it's against high school kids.

Isn't it possible Thon Maker got promoted in high school in Perth and finished year 12 a lot earlier?

Festus Ezeli says he graduated from high school in Nigeria at 14.

Pefect summary gif.

They've got an alright young roster. If they can turn Thon into even just a role player that team is scary defensively.

The bucks are kind of a fascinating team, every player is 8 feet tall with a 10 foot wingspan but I'm not sure what the hell that team will eventually turn in to.

How come nobody's covering this? Can't find any blogs about it or anything.

Because the theory is currently based off of some potentially flimsy evidence that redditors found. I'm sure in the coming days/weeks someone will do some more research and we'll learn more.

A lot of primary schooling in the West Indies are finished by 14/15.

Not surprised it would be the same in some African countries.

As a current resident of the Dominican Republic I will have to disagree on that. Unless you are an exceptional overachiever you are extremely unlikely to complete highschool by 14/15. 18/19 is more aproximate to the norm.

Why isn't there a Star Wars RPG? And wouldn't James Bond make for a pretty good FPS?

To me that looks like he was a regular High School student and not just in an english class like his shady agent claims.

Not really up on this news or NBA in general but..why does the age matter? Is it some problem or the fact that he lied about age?

You draft young to get someone with hopefully a lot of upside potential. Someone who is 23 is already likely as good as they are going to get.

Oh, that should have been obvious since it makes so much sense. lol, thanks for explaining. :)

Well, there's an argument to be made that regardless of his age he's a pretty shitty and overrated player/prospect that the Bucks reached quite highly to draft.

Skal roasted him whenever they were matched one on one and he slid because of a shitty season at Kentucky. Doesn't really speak to Maker being decent at all.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T_OlIxqaobM now you can see that was a 22-year-old adult versus a 17/18-year-old kid? LOL

And in the actual Nike Hoops summit game, he stunk it up.

Common practice. There are kids in my sons league that are older and more developed. Their league is by grade and not by age. So you have parents hold their kids back so they can shine.

I wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt because as an early blooming 7ft dude I spent the majority of my teens having to prove my age in athletic competitions but those yearbooks photographs are ridiculously suspect.

Update:

https://www.reddit.com/r/nba/comments/4qbh92/more_thon_maker_age_proof/

After seeing the updated information from /u/plumlord I decided to do some digging within web.archive.org on the Aranmore Catholic College Website. What I have found I believe to be some of the more concrete information available.

During my dig, I found that Aranmore Catholic College posts a weekly newsletter that were archived along with the website. One of the features of this newsletter is to congratulate students on their Birthday. After scouring through a few of the newsletters, I was able to find one that lists Thon Maker.

The February 11th 2009 Newsletter congratulates a Year 11 Thon Maker on his birthday. This lines up with the time table already put forward on him graduating in the 2010 year. The links below are the web archive (archived September 2009) and a screen capture on rehosted on imgur.

...

In the April 29th 2009 newsletter from Aranmore it congratulates a Matur Maker (same name as Thon's brother) on his birthday. It lists Matur as a year 7 student. Currently Matur is listed as being only a year younger than his brother.

Reminds me of

Someone had jokingly accused him of being well into his 40s, despite the documentation stating he was a 1996, and some people took the bait.

I would have guessed that he was at least 50. I know a Moroccan dude who's 58 and looks younger.
