To hell he is, he's dead right, a neighbor that does that to there house does directly affect your ability to sell your home at a given price. Just because it's not a concern for you does not mean it doesn't affect buyers who actually care what the surrounding area looks like. I had to sell my house for 10k less that I wanted to because the neighbors 3 bourses down let there house fall to shit and have created a very negative vibe at the top of the neighborhood. When people comment to there realitors that they love the home but are concerned about the surrounding properties, that's when you know your neighbors lack of care is negatively affecting your investment.

You don't drop your life savings on a house in a neighborhood that has houses painted like clowns, it sets a bad vibe. You can change your house all you want, but you can't do a thing about the ugly neighbor houses around you. Location location location. You can change everything else about a house, just not that.

Well, when buying a house one has to ask oneself: do I want to live in a neighborhood? or do I want to live in an investment portfolio?

There has to be some kind of bizarre pathology involved when people have kids and start living their lives completely for those kids.

Wow. Maybe they are still young at heart. I think it is very playful and would like to associate with such people.

Nobody wants a mortgage on a house that loses its value.

Then rent, and put the money you would have spent on property taxes into your retirement. As has been already said, how a neighborhood's value changes over time can be a very subjective thing, and there are no guarantees. Many housing markets are still in the gutter after the most recent housing crash, and aren't showing any signs of recovery, and that had nothing to do with wacky paint jobs.

Home ownership can be great, but I don't believe it's the mark of success that our society conditions us to believe it is.

Apparently one of the neighbors is suing because the lead levels in her yard are "in the tens of thousands of times above the legal limit. So my yard is contaminated.”

I'm not seeing the connection the home owner is making. Why would your neighbors repainting a house increase the lead levels in your yard? The only way I could see it is if they stripped the old paint off the house first. If anything, the lead levels are likely high due to their own home.

Yep. Looking at the pictures from the neighbors' houses, it seems more likely that it's her own house paint that caused the high levels. Don't see how she's going to prove that it's their paint in the case.

Eh. Though personally I wouldn't give a shit, I can understand why the neighbors are upset. Even as a huge UP fan I can see my mom being livid if she had to live next to that atrocity, haha. Looks absolutely terrible.

That being said, they need to just get over it. There was a similar looking house in St. Louis that I used to always pass as a kid and I remember loving it.

Their children will probably ask for it to be painted 'normally' once they grow up and their heart dies (lol, breakfast club).
For now the neighbors seriously need to stfu

Nosy neighbors shut the fuck up and mind your business. Keep your own houses from looking like dusty old granny shacks, then maybe you'll have the right to judge--silently.

I think you meant to use 'affect'.

I think you meant to use 'effect'.

edit: Yes, I realize I said the neighbors should stfu, then proceeded to grammar nazi.

I think you meant to use "Nosy neighbors *should*".

I think you meant to use "mind your *own* business'.

I think you meant to use '*If you* keep your own'.

I think you meant to use 'to *be a* grammar Nazi'.

That house is beautiful. I love those pastel colors! Bright, colorful but not tacky. It's a real gem IMO. Those other houses in the street look quite pale in comparison, just watched a video about this "controversy". I bet those other home owners are just mad that the colorful one will draw all the attention.

Historical. Ha!

Nothing should be seriously called historical unless a) it's explicitly mentioned in history, b) has been around long enough to have the terrain around it alter significantly or c) mentioned by Unesco. Otherwise it's just old.
It's USA. Anything over few decades old is considered historical ;)

I've had to deal with two different home owners associations.

The first one was chill as hell. Pretty much meetings consisted of drinking beer and talking shit about each other's wives.

The second was much more anal. Lots of complaining about how "The Stevens have the audacity to have a campaign sign in their yard" or "the Richardsons have gone two weeks without cutting their grass", or how "the Silvermans bought a Pit Bull and I don't feel that type of dog should be allowed." Everyone getting on each other's nerves stepping on everyone's dicks.

Then pay tenfold the value of the house to the owners if you want it so much that you would wrestle it from the rightful owners.

Fucking idiots have no sense of ownership.

Good God. So Disney fans will be even more annoying and have less taste when they are middle-aged home owners?

"They say their kids want a fun home

Paint the house in colors the children choose. Is anyone going to be surprised at future discipline problems?

To me, this is really silly. Let the family paint their house like 'Up' if they want to.
Yeah, the neighbors seem really stuck up, and they care too much about how another house appears in their neighborhood. This whole thing is just ridiculous. A person should be able to do what they want with their home, as long as it is legal.

The argument about historicity is complete nonsense, as Victorian houses were intended to be flashy and loud, and were originally painted in much more extravagant colors. If it was an old Colonial or Federal I could maybe see the argument, but Victorian and Queen Anne architecture is supposed to be bright and loud. The least likely paint color for a historic Victorian would be white:

It is an ugly color scheme IMO, but not nearly enough to have an effect on other people's property values.

I can't comment on the internal or porch stuff but according to the article they did what they needed to do to get the OK to paint the house, their neighbors can fuck off (about the paint).

It's amusing too considering their house looks far better condition wise than any of the other ones with it in those pictures posted from that video. If anything I'd consider their houses to be bringing down the property value of the UP house due to how shitty they look in comparison.

(Not that they actually look "shitty" just saying they don't look nearly as nice to me.)
