[Neil Druckmann] - "I've started thinking about how many of these games I have left in me - And its not that many" (at least not at this scale)

Feels like this is happening across all industries. The old guard, the titan names of different mediums, are all punching out and leaving a massive void behind them. The result will be a competency crisis and a lack of direction or vision towards the future. The bad times are upon us.
The industy will be fine without him. Sony will be fine without him. Bruce Straley left a bigger hole than Neil will.

More than 10 years after and people are still with the same stuff.

Neil created, co-directed and wrote The Last of Us 2013.

He also was a writer for Uncharted 1 and 2 alongside….. Amy Hennig, which never had tanything to do with the Last of Us Franchise.

It’s understandable that a lot of people want to downplay his role at ND, but he’s a key part of the Studio.
well yes that what i said you just repeat and expand literaly same stuff i mentioned . my sentences should not be hard to understand. english is my second language so pardon me if it come accross differently to you.

previous Uncharted games and first TLOU is by Amy Heanig or co-directed with Bruce Starley with that guy as main director while he is with creative director role which is in interview he call that man as his 'partner'. even TLOU 2 also has Anthony Newman and Kurt Margenau acting as co-director overseeing gameplay element in the game
i just put everything in one sentences because i dont see the need of hassle to breakdown everything like the writer role etc since everybody here should already know about these stuff. like you said, it is more than 10 years.

and here i specifically focused on director positon so thats why i didnt touch the rest.

dont worry sir, i know what i am saying. i used to be his fanboy.

It'll be a sad day when folks like Neil, Hideo, Cory, Yoshida, stop making games.

The new crop of directors, while good, don't have what these guys have.

He wants to follow Kojima's path, enter into the world of cinema. It's the natural evolutionary step for directors at that level. That doesn't change the low opinion I have of him.

If he wants to go to hollywood, then do so, but don't drag your IPs through the mud please. Don't make a tv show out of last of us 3. Part 2 is for me one of the best games ever and I don't wanna watch the continuation on hbo.

Most creatives run out of steam rather sooner than later.

I have no idea how Tarantino came up with the number of movies he thinks he has in him directing, leaving the option as a writer anyway open, but feels right to actually not continue forever becoming better in the craft but also robotic and soulless.

Creativity, some truly original ideas can't be forced, ordered and payed. Hence scripts are so mediocre in general, since none of these writers are actually good, they are good enough to form some coherent plot , mostly, and produce some sufficient dialogs, but it's worthless drivel compared to actually good writers. I wonder if AI can soon come up with interesting plots, but at least writing itself might sound more sophisticated and or characters with more distinct personality.

I did really like TLOU 1. The expansion was alright, but not anything great. I disliked TLOU2.

So yeah, hopefully he retires soon and lets someone else take a shot. So far in thisngeneration he did a remake and a cancelled game. Let’s see what’s next.

He needs to make a light hearted game or at least not as depressing as TLOU2.

I love getting the feels too but there's only so much one can take before you get numb to it.

he talk like he alone already generated tons of game like some big veteran legend in industry lol

despite the fact it just TLOU part 2.

  1. He has been in AAA game development forever. Which is the point he is making.
  2. Has been the director of Uncharted 4, TLOU1 and TLOU2. Every one of those games took over 4 years to make. Which is the point he is making.
  3. Every single AAA developer makes games along with a lot of people, but doesn't make the work they do any less important.
  4. If being a developer for over 20 years and has been a part of or helmed at least 3 games of the year winning titles doesn't make you a veteran... then I do not know what being a veteran is then.
  5. To be honest you just sound like a hater.

Ken Levine should give this guy a pep talk.

Seeing Stephen King comment on the show versus all the time he could have spent playing the game was weird.

He has made some very enjoyable games. I feel like he also gets caught up in the non gaming industry. If that makes sense.

Genuinely don't understand why people take Neil seriously at all, as a (wannabe-oscar-bait-movies) video game maker, when he is just a more talented and honest version of David Cage...

Actually David Cage is better, because at least he never pretended to care about video games at all to begin with.

That HBO series is what Neil wanted to ACTUALLY do his whole career.

Embarrassing.

It genuinely makes me sad how lowest common denomiator people that barely play anything beyond PlayStation "it look so shiny" exclusives, think that TLoU1 and 2 is like the peak of gaming.

Please play more games, please

Uncharted: Everything wrong with Triple A "games", condensed into 6 games (the Chloe one, and the PS Vita one included).
Where when people talk about how great they are they never mention a pip about the ACTUAL gameplay.
It's the spectacle, "it look shiny", and the characters, that is ALL you will hear about it.

Some of the greatest games ever made, everyone.

The Last of Us: Oscar bait movies, wearing the mask of a video game.
Where again, 99% of the conversation is dedicated towards:

1- How "deep" it is (Specially 2, which is embarrassing)

2 - How shiny it looks.

3 - How deep it's characters are (Watch or read, ANY post-apocalyptic media, or "father/daughter figure" centric stories, and you have seen Joel and Ellie before, done better)

And 4 - how much it's a beautiful example of how video games are art (When you can make the "games are art" argument with Kirby, but of course lowest common denomiator people think that video games only started being art, when Father Neil made Uncharted and TLOU)

Some of the greatest games ever made, everyone...

It's funny how to this day, Until Dawn has done a better spectacle movie-like game better then Neil and David Cage ever could, and that the Dishonored series was what The Last of Us 2 wanted to go for, but made by people who actually care about video games, so the point of the game, tied with the gameplay, was actually well done.

But Until Dawn and Dishonored will never get the same amount of dick sucking as Uncharted and TLOU2.

Considering Dishonored was made as a love letter to Bioshock and Until Dawn was basically an interactive movie. The comparisions you made are pretty ass.

That said, Fuck Neil Drunkmann.

If You Say So Wow GIF by Identity

Bruce Stralhey wrote what was good in TLOU 1 and the setting is city of thieves lite , if neil had his way storywise (ie an idiotic revenge story across the devastated US... wait it reminds me of something...) it would have been far less interesting.
Surely you can’t be serious with this post lmfao
Neil wrote the entire game

When this man calls it quits, it'll be a sad fucking day for me. He's made more than one of my favorite games of all time - And views games the same way I do. An important figure in the industry. One that tries to actually push the medium forward.

But sounds like after these 2 games He's working on, he'll either try something else, or downscale significantly. Nothing in the AAA realm.

Theres no news article about this anywhere else yet, I'm breaking the news here. Transcript below typed up by me.

On a Podcast that just dropped today, with rapper Logic (the interviewer) Neil Drcukmann was asked:

Time stamped below:

Really good interview, I reccommend watching the entire thing.

I'll never deny that ND makes some amazing games but the praise for the story in TLOU? It's just piggybacking off of The Walking Dead and every post-apocalyptic story ever. There is nothing special about it at all. I'm happy if you like it, I'm not saying no one is allowed to like that stuff but that entire trope felt stale to me when it released on the PS3 and it's still being beaten to death considering Western pop culture is consumed by grief porn.

When Neil leaves ND, they'll improve. I guarantee it.

The first ND game I'm actually really into is TLoU2 because they finally realized good level design and gameplay is important. I'm still baffled that people think introducing more cutscenes and shallow Hollywood tropes pushes gaming forward.

Mah wife is deeed and mah baby guuurl too wahhhhh. Come on lol. That opening is hilarious.

Its not surprising, ND has an insane reputation in terms of quality, that puts a massive amount of pressure on you as the face of the studio.

But his Tarantino example makes me think he's always gonna come back, the small experience won't be fulfilling enough for a guy like him, i would bet. Tarantino will make more movies, he's too critical of modern filmmaking not to be a part of its resurgence.

Should get back to basics and make stuff in the vein of Jak & Daxter and the like, of course Sony/ND won't let him do that but sometimes it's a good change of pace to work on a smaller project. It's like what Sakurai probably wants to do with stuff like Kid Iccarus over Smash Bros again and again and again.

No one cares, go to work, or not. I guess this got me thinking about when I retired from my first job, then I started buying houses to rent them. I’ve done my job so far, but I may soon start buying less houses soon. One day I’ll just retire yet again.

Anyone care?

Well no I dont care about your job, because your work is not my entertainment. I'm not looking forward to your next endeavour because it has nothing to do with me. This is a silly comparison to make. Surely you understand the difference here....

I only want to hear about the emotional drama of the people that bought the houses. The pain and suffering of the bank loans and inspections as small cracks in the hallway had buyers running for their lives. The stress and tears.
