Neo-Geo Collections (PS2)

Hot.

Last Blade 1-2 and the Twinkle Star Sprites remake are also part of the "Neo Geo Collection" and playable online through KDDI. I hope we get Metal Slug 1-2X and a Pulstar/Blazing Star combo too.

It'd be great in Nintendo worked out a deal with SNKP for NeoGeo games on the "Virtual Console". I'd prefer that to Sega stuff actually.

Hate to bust out the "old news," but well, yeah, this is old. :)

Garou: Mark of The Wolves will be out in a few days. I'm getting it and hoping they added an actual arranged soundtrack (not that crap that was on the DC version), which is all the game really needs. I doubt they're adding anything since the game is a budget release ($43 for the game without the Neo-Geo joystick) though, but hey, they did it for Samurai Spirits V, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed...

Anyway, these collections sound nice, but unless they are going to go the KOF '94 Rebout route and make the sprites high res plus add new backgrounds, I don't think I'm going to bother with them unless they're cheap enough.

I'd rather hear about release dates for KOF Neowave (next month now but they keep pushing it back), Neo-Geo Battle Colliseum, and Samurai Shodown Tenka.

World Heroes and Samurai Spirits are "new" though. :)

Seems to be a game by game thing. Twinkle Star Sprites is a total remake visually.

New news to you, maybe, but not to me. I already read all this a little while back on the Neo-Geo.com forums. :)

Yes, and I'm definitely looking forward to that. But right now I want to know about Garou's soundtrack. I've been wanting an arranged soundtrack ever since I got the game on cart way back in 2000.

Will SNK release these on the X-Box?

The company's been consistent in the past in simultaneously releasing their games on both systems.

No, no they haven't. :) It seems to take 6 months to a year for games that SNK releases on PS2 to come out for the Xbox.

This week The King of Fighters: Maximum Impact Maniax is coming out for the Xbox. That's a little under a year after the Japanese release and around 8 months after the U.S. release.

Xbox only has Metal Slug 3, SvC Chaos, KOF MI, and KOF 2002 right now IIRC. KOF 2003 is coming out in late summer/early fall, so I'd expect to see the U.S. KOF 2002/2003 package released here by the end of the year if we're lucky. Meanwhile PS2 is about to get Neowave next month.

As much as I like WH's characters (Go Mudman!) the games themselves leave a lot to be desired nowadays, and haven't aged well. This became apparent when I played them very recently.

Anyways, these have zero chance to be released for US PS2. US XBox though, is a possibility.

Even back then, World Heroes really never played as well as the other fighting games, so yeah, they've definitely aged badly. I did enjoy World Heroes 2/Jet somehwhat back then, though; played the arcade version whenever I saw it, Saurus did a good job porting WH2 to SNES, and Takara did a surprisingly well-done job bringing Jet to the Gameboy. I remember EGM even gave it a silver award when it came out. :)

BTW Mudman is in NGBC.

Doubtful even for Xbox.

SNK Playmore USA is run by a bunch of idiots so these will never come over.

I know that SCEA gives them a hard time and only lets them release their (old) games in collections but they aren't even going to bother with the KOF 95/96/97, KOF 98/99/00, and Last Blade collections slated to hit Japan later this year. Those are practically guaranteed approval in the states and they are sure to sell a decent amount (Last Blade especially I think) but they aren't going to bother releasing any more stuff on PS2 until after the PS3 comes out according to some people I've talked to.

SNK cube games ? Zero possibility. Their explanation: the demographic.

Really, all they'd all hav to do iz sell or package a custom-designed controller with one of their games. Damn Nintendo for not redesigning the dpad for cube.

With all these late releases, i liked it better when Agetec was handling SNK's franchises for the west.

It has nothing to do with "late releases," it has to do with SNK USA making collections out of their games. They go and announced KOF 2002/2003 when only KOF 2002 is out, for example. It's obviously going to take time not only for 2003 to be released in Japan, but then the translation/packaging stuff too.

Their Xbox ports take longer due to the Live play; I'm sure they try to optimize as best as they can. But it's the same with 2002/2003 on Xbox. They always announce these ports WAY too early.

i loved world heroes 2 /jet on Gameboy... that was the shyt! But I never figured out what "JET" meant? Anyway, brocken (sp) is a cool ass character... All the SNK games were great.. I liked Art of Fighting even...

These Hori SNES like controllers are perfect for these old games. If only Nintendo was more serious in marketing these things.

Even though I DO own an XBox, I'd much rather get all my complimations on my Cube since

A. The Gamecube really does have more of the retro video game icons all over this system. I.e. Mega Man and Bomberman have a home here and are welcomed with open arms.
B. Most of the complimations I own are on the Gamecube (Though obviously when it comes to marketing, Gamecube owners sometimes READ: SOMETIMES make up the smallest part of the owners of these complimations.
C. Portability. When you have SNES ports on the GBA, and arcade and other complimations on small compact CDs, really, the Gamecube was modeled with the idea for holding parties. Only if Nintendo was more reliant on LAN gaming would this statement be 100% true.

Think about it, 4 small Gamecube machines running...oh say Hydro Thunder on MAT3 using steering wheels, wireless controllers, what have you. The idea is TOTALLY there. But...thanks for screwing up THAT idea, Nintendo.

As an aside: how are these games typically "ported?" Do they write emulators? Or is everything written after a certain era pretty much in some C derivative and easily recompilable?

SNK should release all these games on one disk in a collection disk. with hte amount of games that is on that list, Iam sure Sony would approve that.

The Fatal Fury series after the first one still hold up quite well, same with all the Sam Shos. I was never a fan of World Heroes or AoF though.

Also SNKP Xbox Live ports kthx

Ported. PS2 doesn't have the ram to straight up emulate newer KOFs. Plus they often enchance them in many ways (KOF2001 had higher res'd BGs and a new menu screen, for example.)

SS collection for XBL please kthxbai.

The "Jet" was for turbo speed if I'm remembering correctly. The game also had two more characters (Jack and Ryofu), plus the new tournament mode for single player where you fought three guys in a row. Fun game.

The next WH title, World Heroes Perfect, added like one new character (Son Goku) and really not too much else from what I remember. The game looked better, but just felt like more of the same. Loved the Neo CD/Saturn arranged music though.

ADK's best fighting is Ninja Master's; it still plays great today. It's the only weapons-based fighting game that allows you to sheathe your weapon and then do some different combos without it. Check it out if you've played it; I'd love for that game to get the PS2 collection treatment since it was vastly overlooked.

Each KOF game on PS2 has been ehanced with every after 2000:

-KOF 2001: Higher res prerendered backgrounds, new menu graphics.

-KOF 2002: High res 3D backgrounds, five added hidden unlockable characters.

-KOF 2003: High res 3D backgrounds, new arranged soundtrack, new classic style KOF play mode. With all its enhancements, 2003 looks and sounds like a new game.

-KOF '94 Rebout: High res 3D backgrounds, sprites made high res with new filtering technique.

-KOF Neowave (Not yet released): High res 3D backgrounds, five added characters (one of them is Angel), ????

I've seen Neowave in the arcade before and while not like Rebout, the sprites have had something done to them where they look a bit sharper/more colorful.

Also KOF 2002 on Xbox had its background colors dulled down; it really lacks in color but does make the sprites look better against the backgrounds. I prefer the look of the PS2 version over it, however.

supposedly Fist of North Star and KOFXI slated for fall in Japan.. geez whats taking Neowave so long..

Those games are slated for fall *arcade* releases, not home releases. :) Someone on Madman's took some Japanese text regarding the various fighting game releases and thought they were talking about the home versions. Neowave hits PS2 next month.

I believe the arcade release dates listed are:

July- Neo-Geo Battle Colliseum, Gundam Seed, Tekken 5 ver. 5.1
August- Samurai Spirits Tenka
September- The King of Fighters XI
October- Fist of The North Star
November- Guilty Gear XX #Reload Slash
December- Super Dragonball Z

World Heroes Perfect had more normal attacks, a super meter and guard break moves. Most of the presentation was new too, new levels and endings.

Guilty Gear XX Slash is kind of ridiculous. XX is old, they need to do XXX not another upgrade. It doesn't even seem like much of one.

I have been reading about this too. Supposedly, SnkPlaymoreusa will continue to distribute U.S. releases of SNk games for the PS2 once the PS3 arrives on U.S. shores. They believe SCEA well be more lenient in their approval process once the PS2 catalog of games starts to dwindle down.

i dunno lyte, iggy is pretty reliable when it comes to news

I know, but apparently the original source he got it from was talking about the arcade releases (which certainly makes sense given that some of those games aren't even out of the testing phase yet and would have been announced for PS2 some time ago if they were coming in a few months) according to people at Neo-Geo.com. The original Japanese article(?) even mentions an arcade IIRC.

EDIT: Yeah, Beezlebubble confirmed it...Iggy links to Kohatsu, which is an arcade web site.

i saw that and wondered why he said "port" thing is kohatsu is an arcade (not far from where i live actually) and the schedule at the bottom of their site is referring to arcade release dates.

as is this:

7月上旬に鉄拳5Ver5.1 tekken 5 ver5.1
7月上旬にガンダムSEED 連合vsZ.A.F.T. new gundam one
7月下旬にバトコロ nbc
8月下旬に剣サム samsho
9月にKOF11 kof 11
10月に北斗の拳 fist of the north star
11月にギルティスラッシュ new guilty gear upgrade (super turbo x championship ed)
12月に超DBZ chou dbz

Wow, they announced NGBC last year and KOFXI was just announced in May and they are releasing it only 2 months apart? What is taking NGBC so long?
