Not sure what there is to 'get'.
The action is great. You either like it or you don't.
If you are watching it for plot and humour and that's it, then yea, you may not think it is 'anime of the year' quality.

For most people who dislike the show, that is the main issue. The show has nothing to get. One Punch Man offers up some of the best fights and action scenes in the genre; I doubt many people can deny it that. Along that line, OPM has some of the best animation of the year with the only real competition coming from the absurdly detailed Sound! Euphonium.

But the humor - which is good in the first half - dies off in the second as the series becomes more serious than it really should be. As a result of the change to a more serious tone, the parody aspect of the shows starts to suffer as well. When we start getting introduced to numerous shallow characters who don't have enough screen time to really connect to in any meaningful way, the path that OPM was taking changes drastically and the whole series suffers for it.

I can't say that people are wrong to chose it. This is a poll on what people thought their personal favorite shows of the year were and enjoyment is based on different things. I, objectively, can't see the show as better than Shirobako or Sound! Euphonium. Personally, I can't even see it on my top 5 for last year.

Well if one doesn't find the humor funny/finds the series one punchline to get old then what are you left with? An action series where a bunch of jobbers doing impressive looking stuff that almost always amounts to nothing while the audience waits for Saitama to show up and solve the problem in one punch then get no credit from the masses due to innane leaps of logic.

It truly comes down to clearly what people like about OpM is what I and others don't like about it and the only option is to agree to disagree.

Though we can all agree that the art is fantastic in murata's manga version and the animation in the anime does it justice.

Honestly, I don't even find it very funny. I find it amusing and the goofiness makes me smile, but the character interactions and action are what I'm in it for. Stuff like Saitama's interactions with Mumen Rider are among my favorite anime moments in 2015, and I'd hardly call those funny. More heartwarming and optimistic, which the series does surprisingly well, especially the latter.

Sure, if I had managed to put Euphonium in my list, OPM wouldn't have been in my top 5 either.
It's not the anime of the year for me or anything.
I'm just trying to say that it is easy, for me, to see why people would really like it.

Wow, no way! PP has a movie? I'm going to watch this once I tell my sister about it.

I've barely watched any new anime in 2015 to be honest. I've been heavily into older anime/manga since I binge watched Slam Dunk in December of 2014. Whoever has not seen this, watch it. It's the best fictional sports story ever told on any medium. I've been slowly catching up with Saint Seya watching normally one episode per day. Only new series I've watched this year was Haikyuu season 1, and I am a season behind! Also PP season 2, it came out last year right? Possibly 2-3 other new anime standalone series, but my mind is going blank. :'( I think I will continue watching some of the old stuff until possibly June when I have more time, then start watching the new series in 2015 and whatever 2016 has in store for me then. I would like to finish REAL by the incredible Inoue-san by then. Then I can choose to either start reading Berserk (saw the anime) or Vagabond.

Eagerly awaiting for season 2 of both Magi & Attack on Titan. I've decided to watch the animes before I jump and completely finish the manga of each series once I finish watching it. I feel anime loses some of its luster when I simultaneously read the manga, One Piece being the biggest culprit.

The second featured comment for Shirobako makes me really want to try it out.

Its a very good quote too. Really describes a big part of why I enjoyed Shirobako. Felt incredibly "relatable" for a lack of a better word.

I'm like, the only person in the main anime OT that is watching it and a lot of people seem to hate it.

Now that Super isn't retreading old ground I'm sure general opinion will improve. However, the show is a labor of commercialism and not love and it shows.

It's sorta expected. OPM is the kind of anime those are new to the medium will watch, while Shirobako is much less beginner friendly and doesn't have the "hype" behind it to catch as much attention.

Eh.. what are some series you do like? 2015 had a ton of overlooked anime, for me. Gatchaman, Punchline, Blood Blockade Battlefront are all action shows that didn't make the list that I would have given an 8. Non Non Biyori and Koufuku Graffiti are fantastic SoL anime. I would give NNB a 9 or 10, even.

I thought this year, as a whole, was much better better than 2013 and 2014. There weren't any real standouts - things like Ping Pong, Space Battleship Yamato 2199, or Kill La Kill - but I would give every show up until the top 42 on the voting list a 7 or greater.

For sure, but the story alone isn't really why people would vote it anime of the year. Or at least, I don't think that is why.
The story is decent, the humour is decent, the characters are good, and the action is great, would be my opinion.

It's not solely a comedy series though. If you watch Daily Lives of Highschool Boys and don't find the humour funny, then you are literally left with nothing.
With One Punch Man, the action is excellently done, the character designs are interesting at the least. Even if you don't find the humour funny, there are still reasons to watch it and enjoy it.
It's perfectly fine if you don't like the series and if it isn't for you. I would never say you have to like it.
But when people say they 'just don't get it', and act like it is shocking how people could even possibly like it, I find that to be a little extreme.

I'm not shocked that people like it, I'm shocked that an overwhelmingly large number of people enjoy it. It's near-universal. Things that are hyped to this extreme by this many people usually deliver something for everybody, and even if it's not something I personally enjoy I can see why it would appeal to them. I don't get that feeling from this show. My closest friend and I looked at each other confused after finishing it. There was this strange, cognitive dissonance between us when we tried discussing it. "We should enjoy this, right?" It's not a trend of us not liking this sort of thing. We just didn't enjoy it, and I'm still bewildered why so many from so many segments of the population love it.

What BassForever said captures allot of my feelings on the show. For its fantastic production values, I don't feel there's much to it at the core. It sets a pattern for its stories and then sticks to them without advancing in a meaningful or interesting way. I don't like most of the cast either although I'm hesitant to say they're bad (I'm hesitant to say anything really lol).

One of my passing thoughts is that OPM should have just been a few OVA episodes. That would have worked fine... maybe, I don't know. I can definitely say I don't like the TV series.

The show deftly manages a cast of dozens of endearing characters, juggling personal conflicts and larger narrative threads and constant jolts of comedy. It’s an adult drama that simultaneously reveals and canonizes the struggles of anime production, coming across as a fatigued love letter to the industry that built it. It’s full of great gags and relatable personal trials and little moments that bring its characters to life, highlighting the everyday melancholy of stuff like telling your parents you’re okay on the phone while heating up one more microwave dinner. It consistently veers off into side-stories from the industry, intriguing sidelines that run from The Day Anno Saved Christmas to watching a character break down as they remember the characters, stories, and shows that made them fall in love with anime to begin with.

Always nice to see that a bunch of people watched and enjoyed the shows that I like as well.

I hope next year will be one where IBO will take a similiar spot and one where I can give Concrete Revolutio S2 a solid entry in my own list. Although it's going to be tough for both those shows, especially with all the hype competition that's coming up.

The whole first episode was amazing and such a good start to the series. I also must say that the opening scene overshadows everything else in GX. There where so many amazing moments like

Cross Ange is the perfect example of great concept ruined by weird unnecessary inclusion of T&A. There's a glimpse of brilliance hidden under those ecchi. It would have done fine as a straight mecha anime.

I'm usually not very fond of GAF's aggregate AOTY lists, but this year in particular has probably elicited the most averse reaction I've had to them. In the past I felt like there was at least a small opportunity for titles that were creatively refreshing or substantial to sneak through. These choices carry such a flat tone, a wall of sequels and spin-offs that very bluntly wear their commercial nature on their sleeve. My natural assumption is to assume that these sort of titles will serve as building blocks for a list that comes from a public vote, but the results this year feel artistically bereft. In the past at least the OVA/Film/Short section offered some kind of reprieve, but I don't get the same feeling this year. The complete disinclination towards smaller projects leaves a very sour taste. Hand waving away these problems by labeling the year as "weak" ignores the reality of the shift in the voting block. I could not be more disappointed.

I don't know. What do you think was overlooked from 2015? It was a year of tepid sequels. You're going to get these years at some point.

In contrast, 2016 already has a strong showing with Rakugo and Erased and the "standardization" of the shorts format.

It made my list. The second half isn't as great as the first of course, but I still think the show is overall pretty good and an easy recommendation for anyone with even a modest interest in anime. Migi is the bombest.

I'm not bothered by it not making the list. I haven't seen most of the shows that made the top 10, actually.

I'm almost done the first season of Haikyuu!!, and I'm loving it.

I suppose I'll need another subscription service because Crunchyroll doesn't offer all the shows that I'm looking for.

A few years ago, something like Galko would've been stretched out to 20 minutes with a lot of padding to ruin the jokes. However, there's at least 3 decent shows this season using the 7.5 minutes format. I think it marks a shift in how gag manga is being adapted and it's a format that has room to grow.

One of the reasons the Movie/OVA/Shorts section tends to be really lopsided (popular movie heavy, light on shorts, OVAs all over the place) is because the choices are not very visible or accessible. Shorts like Galko existing in the same space as regular shows like Gundam means more people will be able to see them and vote.

Yeah sure but the things like the "Ultra Super Anime Time" block and Teekyu were already a thing in 2015. As well as popular other shorts like Somera-chan and Wakako-zake.

I wouldn't say that this is really a thing that happened in 2016
