Hitler and Stalin were both sufficiently bad to not really need to have a heated argument about which of the two was worse, right? Like when you're three years old you start reading books and stuff and go, "whoa, Hitler was, like, the worst guy ever!" But then you read the next page of your History of Western Civilization textbook and go, "oh, hold up, 40+ million body count and all these ongoing geopolitical consequences? Shit, maybe Stalin?" Then you debate it with the other kids while pretending to clumsily play with blocks. But then there's some contrarian nerd who walks over with his fuckin' Lincoln Logs and insists on bringing up Pol Pot or Mao and ruins a perfectly good debate you were having and you all team up and kick his ass.
Hitler or Stalin: both acceptable answers. Lincoln Logs: loser blocks.

I had considered making a new thread for this, but don’t want to risk stirring the pot. Can someone catch me up to speed on what NeoGAF is like nowadays? When the other forum opened up, they were all about “civility” and healthy debate, but it seems to have become a place where you get banned for not agreeing with the mods. Yet, i see several recent threads here where people have voiced very conservative views and not been instantly shit on, and an actual discussion happened.
Is NeoGAF actually the sane one now? Can people on both sides actually talk to each other here without people losing their shit?

Yes, sanity has returned here and the atmosphere is more of what it was like pre-2010.

I don't think you're making it worse because you seem to handle criticism/discourse with decent composure.
I think it's because you realize that opinions can be shared without the fear of an authoritarian mod staff. I myself am also adjusting to that as well.
It is seemingly not an echo chamber so far. To me that is a good thing, since people can learn from each other's perspectives more and possibly see things they may not have seen otherwise, no matter the political ideals or worldview.

I was banned in 2015, effectively for arguing that punishment for crimes should ideally be left to the judiciary & in all cases need to be investigated thoroughly before punishing someone; in contrast to having social media mob justice that try get people fired/otherwise punished, at times based on evidence or claims from one side without proper fact checks:

Around where I'm from (Europe), this wouldn't even be remotely controversial.
Maybe in the US there's a different attitude towards trust in the legal or public system, so you could probably debate if these channels are still effective in preventing racism etc.

Yeah there were many odd decisions before 2016. The depth of the crazy bans just did not become very apparent to the owner until the election and sabotage of the community. Anyway, you should PM Evilore and ask him to unban and merge the accounts. He is very active again and will almost certainly get back to you in a timely fashion, and if he agrees the ban wasn't warranted he can unban your old account and merge it with your new one. His offer to review them is legit, I know from experience.

It was not banned, i just forgot my password. Got logged out on my desktop, tried to change the password, but my spam filter from my office mail didn't let any message through. Eventually after i got logged out on mobile i got back to lurking.
Would it be possible to change the email in that account to the one i used to create this one? Or just merge the accounts so that this useless one disappears?

Yeah, we're partially through the initial review of the Ban Justice list and almost all of Bish's bans are slated for overturning. We're going to go back farther than 2016 for his ban list after this initial run is concluded, and possibly a couple other ex-mods depending on how the rest of the review goes. At any rate, your original account has been unbanned.

Thousands of perms. iirc he's top three all-time with besada and dragona.
The initial Ban Justice list we're working on is about 1300 perms and will help us evaluate where to go from there. I don't want to jump to any conclusions about people's actions, especially in public (i.e. here), without a thorough investigation first. Bear with us being a little quiet about additional specifics until this phase wraps. After this list is completed I'll be able to share some more about who the bad apples were on the ex-mod team and what the next steps are.
In a few days I'll begin with the unbanning and notification of the people on the aforementioned big list who have been found wrongfully permed. Expect more than half of the 1300, mostly regulars, to get their accounts back (specifics when the exact number is known of course) And that's just a partial list from 2016-2017.

I had a Junior account that was perm banned for calling out Devin Faraci as a creep before he unmasked himself as a creep.
Not sure if that falls under the scope of your work here, but I think it's good you're taking the time to review unjustified ideologically motivated bans.

Considering this was 3 years ago (almost to the day), I think I learned my lesson.

Evilore, I wish to be granted member status again. I was juniored by one of the "old" mods for stating my own opinion on a fellow members relationship that was twisted and mobbed against to which i was painted as a sexist. Those old mods couldnt handle dissenting opinions I guess

This is one of my biggest complains about NewGAF, maybe it has to do with the new platform, i don't know. Whenever I see someone banned, I click on their username to try to go to their post history and see what lead to that ban, but most of the times I get a "Oops something went wrong" message.

Yes it would be great to know why and what post to help others and understand the moderation rules in practice, but I assume there is too much work to do especially if it were repeat offences or a pattern then u would need a lot of links etc. Im happy with the current system provided its transparent to the members.

I mean I think he was clearly trolling, but yeah I'd like to know why he was banned as well, as far as trolling goes that was pretty mild and harmless and even inspired some decent debate.

And it is truly difficult to see the difference between a parody and just a devouy far leftist these days.

If you hover over where their avatar is or is not (a link to their name works too), a window will pop up with some of their info. If you click on the posts number, it'll take you to a list of their recent posts. That works for me.

Ban and warn reasons have definitely been a thing since the redesign. Seen them plenty.
Just a note. We will try and pull this all together in a moderation thread as well but there are a lot of things happening in the background that are eating time. Documentation always falls by the wayside.
A warning is not always a warning. Sometimes we just tag them onto a post for high visibility. It's leveraging the feature to post a public notice.
If points are assigned then it becomes a proper warning. We are still getting data on whether a threshold should indicate a ban for accumulated infractions. Like driver's license points. That way the users know in what context theyvare posting. At the moment we use them to track frequency of misdemeanors.
Mod edits are done as a last resort and we try where possible to leave the original content so people reading the edit know what's not acceptable, but also in what context, as that makes up the proportion of things being taken the wrong way.

If you are going to do a points system then you need to have a system in place for points to fall off also.
For example, at 10 points you are banned. For minor infractions you are given a point. For majors 3. For egregious ones you are given 9 or 10. Whatever.
But like every month a point falls off.
That said, it seems way too hard to keep track of something like that.
But there needs to be a way to get back into the good graces (that isn't publicized so people can know when to eat a moderation cuz they got room to spare).
It's automated. So if you assign 3 points, they can auto expire after 1 month say.

Bill has there been any thought into implementing threadmarking for the forum? This would allow the OP and mods to mark certain posts that can be accessed from any page so posters can see if there have been any announcements/updates/threadruling updates/etc. I'm a member of another forum that implemented them a few years back and while it was a bit odd at first it actually became really convenient once it was figured out.

Yeah like bookmarks, or anchors. Our dev resource is pretty tied up on custom developments at the moment but I see there is an add-on for xf 1.4/1.5 that we might just wait until it's ported to 2.0 as a stable release

When you have time would you please review my account? Over 6 years I got 2 mod actions:
1. Last August I was banned for a month by a former mod and I don't think I deserve it. I don't think the celebrity was a good role model imo, which has nothing to do with their gender. It applies to both men and women. Was insulted and wrongfully labeled by the mob and mod, simply because of their assumptions.
2. 4 years ago I made a parody thread and got junior-ed. I deserve this one. I was immature, childish and the forum doesn't need a knee jerk reaction thread. I have learned the lessons and still regret it.
My question is that will my account ever gained back the "member" status? I don't have the ability to create thread, achievement points and conversations for over 4 years. I think I am a better poster now and hopefully can contribute to the community more.
Either way happy gaming everyone and wishing that the forum keeps growing! Thanks for reading!

He permabanned me because I changed my mind and edited a post about a member who loved to make mass account graveyard threads. The ban message was "Not slick enough"

It's actually kind of funny looking at that thread now because it's like a reverse death toll now.
I just had enough of him getting away with what he liked to do and said some things about him and the mods. Did I deserve a ban? I'd say so. Did it have to be a permaban? Of course not. It's just a shame that so many others in that very thread had to take his bait and get banned as well while I was basically telling them not to take the guy seriously since he just wanted to cause trouble.
