NeoGAF Candy Swap Summer 2011 Edition

I don't mind going above $20 or to be paired with someone from the US, but most of the good stuff here in Chile is chocolate, cookies, hard candy, toffees and gummies. I definitely would prefer someone who's willing to take a bit of everything.

We also have Manjar Bars. Familiar with Dulce de Leche? Imagine that, but in bar form.

Not sure if you are or not, but I'd keep a running tally of the US/Canada versus international participants so you know how many of each you need to get even match ups. The past few candy swaps have been lopsided toward US participants and we had to freeze those and extend sign ups for overseas folks for a while to even up. I did a quick count in this thread and it's looking better than the one I ran, much more even. Just something to keep an eye on.

I believe Dega is keeping some track of that but I'll do it regardless this evening. Good idea.

By the way, list updated. We only have a few more days to sign in, so hurry up!

I traded with J.M. last time (yes, I was responsible for the bugs). I had a blast and I'd love to do it again!

Bacon and cheese crickets... Interesting. As a huge cheese fan I'd be curious to know if you've tried them yourself and if they deliver on the taste front?

Guys, I know I'm a fledgling-gaffer (this post being in fact, my first) but I really want in on this! Please? I've dreamt of exotic candies from other lands for so long and despite living in the UK (not best known for producing particularly striking cuisine) will deliver what I can.

Pre-empting that I'm allowed in, here's my info:
Kung Fu Bill
Country: UK (Wales)
Preferred partner: Non-specific, but outside of Europe if possible
Likes: Everything (apart from below)
Dislikes: Coffee flavoured candy, gum, clove, liquorice and not overly keen on nuts
Allergies: Nope

Man, I'm passing so many random candy and snack shops here in Hong Kong. I'm getting ideas out the bing bong.

Whoever gets you is in for a treat...Loads of good stuff from Aji Ichiban, Kee Wah, Wing Wah, etc.

ok, i give...i give...
I'm down

Litflynt912
Home Country: U.S.A.
Perferred Swap: U.K. , Japan

No allergies but prefer nothing licorice or bugs

Yeah, I'm in.

Swapper: Crucified
Country of Residence: Canada (but we have plenty of U.S. candy too)
Preferred Partner: Non-Canada, Non-U.S.
Likes: Just about everything.
Dislikes: Salted licorice, anything goopy or gel-like.
Allergies: None!

I really want to get in on this, but I'm worried about the shipping costs. Anyone have any experience shipping a ~5lb box (I'm estimating) to some place like Japan from Canada?

I hate to do this, but I need to rescind my entry into this year's candy swap. :(

Unfortunately, I just can't afford it. Please remove me from the list.

Good luck to all those who are participating this year!

My wife brought me some of these from a trip to Texas. They don't really taste like anything. They were crunchy, and had a slight flavor of processed cheese dust.

Ugh, I just phoned all the mail companies in town and none of them allow for shipping any sort of food. The only way I can ship it is through regular mail but it takes about a month and everything will melt by then, not to mention there's no guarantee it won't be confiscated by customs.

So yeah, forced to back out. Really sorry about this.

I'm in, as well as my best friend if that's OK. She did it last year too along with me and it went well :)

Me:

Resident Country | UK
Preferred Partner Country | Outside Europe, preferably
Candy Likes | I like most things. Sweet, Chocolate, fruity, caramel, peanut butter, go for it!
Candy Dislikes | Licorice, coffee and dark chocolate.
Allergies | None

Nothing eatable, they said. I specifically asked for wrapped candy and they said no.

Just don't tell them! Pack the box and cover the candy in newspaper. I've done it on numerous occasions. Not just candy but the occasional cheque or cash :|

Like I said before I'm willing to spend well over $20 because like others have said, I a) love candy but b) want to make a good impression.

bump!

I'll make that here in a bit if you haven't already.

Hmm, I think I'd like to do this.

Before I get into it, just curious, when I give someone my shipping address, should I go with my current home address or my school address that I'll be at in a month? Essentially, how long do these take to get to their destination? I'm planning on getting something from Europe and I live in NH.

Best bet might be to give the school address, but ask that whoever sends to you delays until you know you'll be there?

could we also list people who are willing to spend more than the $20? because on both of my trades, I'm happy to go up to £30/$50, so would be handy to know how many people are willing to do whatever amounts

Ok, coming close to the matching date and we have 38 people from the USA/Canada so far and 34 from overseas.

So to even up this we need at least FOUR people not from USA/Canada if we want the matchings to go mostly even.

Also, if any more people want to sign up, we close shop in less than two days. So hurry up!

It's always better to be on the safe side. Delays happen, and candy won't go bad in a week or two. (Or a month)

Also, we posted some links for shipping calculation prices in the OP. Do those work for you? I believe those are only for the US but national post office websites have shipping prices and whatnot.

Where are you now?

Good idea.

Still, if people who have done this could give me an estimate on how long it takes from when the package is shipped until they receive it, that would be helpful.

Regardless, I'm in.

Nathan Gower
Country: USA
Preferred partner: Non-UK/Ireland western Europe, preferably Scandinavian countries.
Likes: Everything basically. Specifically, dark chocolate, caramel, toffee, white chocolate, nuts, gummies, limited amounts of hard candies. I like really rich flavors more so than really sweet flavors, if that makes sense. I don't dislike fruit flavors, but don't go overboard.
Dislikes: Coconut, whatever you classify DOTS under, taffy, cinnamon, spicy, Licorice, bugs, mint derivatives.
Allergies: None that I know of, but strawberries make me break out, so better to avoid them. Strawberry flavored candy is fine, but something explicitly strawberry (like dehydrated fruit) should be avoided.

Cool! I'll put you in. Try and bring people from outside of the US and Canada in for the swap as well :P

Country: USA
Preferred partner: Anywhere uncommon, preferably not European, someone who wants weird candy
Likes: the weirder, the better. Also, dark chocolate.
Dislikes: anything without nuts or peanut butter or caramel
Allergies: mosquitoes

Hmm I have the opposite.

USA-35
Overseas-38

edit: 35 now..

Hahah one of us is PLAIN wrong! I have to do some stuff now but I'll check back later. At any rate, the list in post #6 should have the details, with username/country of origin/country of preference.

I did a shipping calculator thing on canadapost.ca and if you can fit all your candy into a box 12 inches by 15.75 inches by 7.75 inches, you can ship 2 kg (4.5 pounds) to Japan for around $25. Small Packet International Surface, 4-10 business days.

I'll give it a try.

Country: USA
Preferred partner: Japan preferably.
Likes: Gummi candy, jelly beans, hard candy and caramel.
Dislikes: Anything with bugs in it. I also dislike chocolate, anything with peanut butter or peanuts, almonds, walnuts.
Allergies: None.

Fuck it, I'm in!

Country: England

Preferred partner: USA/Canada

Likes: Chocolate, chocolate and more chocolate stuff (but not white), especially the Reeses peanut butter stuff, caramel, taffy, also loved the Mini Charleston Chews from last time. Basically any chcoclate with nuts or other ingredients are good with me. Don't mind crisps (chips) either. Would also like to give a Sno-ball or two a try. Also loved Turtles! Any other unique to the States/Canada stuff you can think of.

Dislikes: Liquorice, Twinkies, Haribo, Mike & Ike's, Skittles, Snickers, Mars, Milky Way, Starbust (Do like Haribo, Skittles, M&I, Mars, Snickers, Starburst etc but are easily available over here)

Allergies: None

Sorry if it sounds overly fussy but seeing as it's only once a year thought it best to get unique stuff if I can.

This is what I received last year which has enabled me to be a bit more thorough in my dislikes: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=23150619&postcount=505

This is what I sent: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=23256504&postcount=635

Am willing to go to approx. £30/$50

Edit:I have a friend not on Neogaf that would like to take part as well, if that's ok?

Ok, here's my friends details:

Russ:

Preferred country: USA
Likes: Any Chocolate stuff (but not with nuts), Cakes, Caramel, Pretzels, Red Liquorice, Taffy, Gums, also love Charleston Chews (so plenty of them). Would also like to try some Hostess Sno-balls. Also anything you think is unique and that you probably can’t get in the UK

Dislikes: Anything with NUTS in it, Peanut Butter, Haribo, Original Skittles, Snickers, Starbust ( I do like Haribo, Skittles, Starburst etc but are easily available over here)

Allergies: None

Spend approx £30/$50

I'm actually totally fine with having someone from my own country (US) found out what I wanted to ship doesn't ship internationally. I'll take international as well, but it will be a lot more complicated. Sorry, I'm a whiner. :[

Hmmm... going to have to sleep on this one and make a decision tomorrow as to whether I'm in or not.

But wouldn't want to swap with a USA/Canada based swapper. If from the UK, I'd probably provide a shopping list... Dry Roasted Peanuts, Revels, Prawn Cocktail Skips...

Did we have to say whether we're willing to go over the $20 benchmark or not? I thought this would just be something that we could work out with our partners.
Well either way, I'm willing to go over $20 for sure.

Actually, I'm going to have to cancel my entry for gaf candy swap :( I'm so sorry. A sculpture with an upcoming due date broke, I need to scramble for cash to rebuy some materials :(

Now i feel like such a jerk face.

Probably easier to sort out now so people can be matched up with people in the same price brackets :)

i'm in! :)

Country: Germany
Preferred partner: all except Europe
Likes: nearly anything
Dislikes: fruits, pure milk chocolate(eg hershey stuff)
Allergies: none

My friend wants to join. Hope we're not too late.

Preferred Country: Non-Canada, non-US
Likes: Gummies, sour candy, chocolate
Dislikes: Coconut
Allergies: None

My gf was excited when I told her about this, so I'm in.

Which candy you like: chocolate, sour, sweet, hard. Anything unusual!
Which candy you dislike: licorice
Which candy kills you on the inside, be it allergies or some sort of phobia: none!

So how are people going to get paired up if they have no preference?

Either by our hunch or by a randomized method such as the paw of a cat.

Anyway, we are closing shop! Dega got the matchups ready, I'm gonna go over them, see if we have any people hanging and how to work it out and will be sending PM's.

So no more signups for now!

Thank you all for taking part in this. Now it's candy shopping time.

Well, all PMs have been sent. And DaNcaKe, since the deadline is today and if somebody else shows up we can do an exception or two.

That is unless some of the swappers already matched wants to go the extra mile and double/triple dip.

Now I need to get some not-candy. I've been sending PMs for like an hour and lunchtime was two hours ago!
