I`ve lived in Tokyo for 6 months and I didn`t even know 2000 yen notes existed :lol

I lived in Beppu for a year and my mind just got blown.

By the way, I don't know how long the trip is, but you will burn through that incredibly fast if you are going to a tourist area. 2000 yen alone just dissolves in your hand if you stand in Japan for 5 seconds.

Go to a Yamada Denki for me and sing the song. I miss it so.

LOL...like I said last page...the $500 is for simply getting to the hotel from the airport--it's just to have local currency in my pocket when I touch down.....lol

I actually want to use my card as much as permits (which I don't think will be alot) and don't mind paying the extra 5% on top of that...

my actual limit for the trip is about 1500 total for the 5 days I'm there...and I doubt I will blow through that... (there are only so many maid cafes...lol)
but I have more if I need it...not like I am on a mission to find the first nintendo made...
just going to take it in and explore...
FF XIII is a def pickup though since I leave the 18th and it comes out the 17th...
some magazines...a couple saturn games at Super Potato...
food..food...food...and a pair of edwin jeans with a BAPE hoody...that's it...

+ Hello Kitty stuff for my 5 year old...

I do apprecaite the GAF help and advice as always... The touristy places might be the strip in Akihabara but that would be it...

Been a long time since I bought anything Star Wars related, so I went with this:

And for the hood itself, there's a 'visor'. :)

That's awesome. What I like most is that it's not too obvious what it is. Just subtle enough, IMO. I may have to pick one up myself.

You don't want to go to Kobe, Nara, Osaka? Your missing out on beautiful spots, especially right now.

C'mon man. Japan is more than Akihabara and weeaboo bullshit. It's a shame if that's all you'll do there.

We're actually still thinking of a middle name! My wife wants something short, and everything I think of is "too long".

Actually, your wife could come up with some suggestions if she likes, because at the moment, we can't think of anything :lol

leave it to GAF to make one feel bad about going on vacation...:D j/k

when it comes to this trip....I have wanted to go to Akihabara since I was 4 (I'm 27) and I plan on exploring every square inch of it if I can in the time I have...if I get bored...I plan to hop on the train and explore...There was a reason I booked the hotel in Akiba for double the price of the hotel I originally had booked in Hiro... (was $250 for the week, now I paid almost 500)

to each his own...as far as going to kobe for a meal...going to Osaka to take in the scenery and the tetsujin statue...if I can, I am all about it...but I'm on a mission...

more over so, I do appreciate all the advice and please don't stop...

I dont have pictures right now, but I havent posted in this thread and have a lot to take pictures of.

If you remember back in the July/August range I did post the birthday gift from my girlfriend, an A/V Famicom and a ton of games.

Christmas present is even bigger for me. A Pc Engine Duo-R with Ninja Ryukenden and Dracula X... ALL for $250, and in the US shipping :D Pics to come. :D

Honestly, you say this now, but when you get there, you'll probably be ready for a change after a day or two of Akihabara shopping/arcades. When you're only in a country for 5 days, only seeing one very limited side of it feels very wasteful. I'd plan ahead to at least see the Imperial Gardens. Kamakura is a 1/2 day trip and more of the "traditional" side of Japanese culture.

As for general travel tips, the key to having a successful trip is to plan plan plan. You want to have a daily schedule/itinerary in your hand when you touch down. Don't think you'll just figure things out as you go along. You won't know the language/how to get around, don't throw figuring out where to go on top of that too. An hour spent planning at home is another hour to have fun in Tokyo.

I like Akihabara, but couldn't stand to live in it...too many people >.>

During Comiket, Akihabara actually smells horrible too, especially on Saturday...people who weren't able to buy their wanted doujinshi at big site rush to Akihabara to buy them and...well, there are quite a few folks who haven't bathed for a few days, spent nights sleeping in parks, etc, all to buy the latest and greatest amateur tentacle porn :p

I would get a new cooling fan if you have the chance. I had one like that on my Intel and it didn't stick to the CPU very well, caused me overheating issues.
Thanks fo the heads up, but I haven't had any problems yet, I hope i don't...

This is probably my last pick up of the year:
SpiritTracks.jpg

I already have the Phantom Hourglass versions of the Link and Phantom figurines, but the tin edition cost the same as the game by itself so I thought I might as well double dip.

PS3 died on me while playing Uncharted 2, to get the disc out I had to do this:

Took advantage of Best Buy's deal on Sony TVs with free PS3, movie and game.

Hell the few beers I have had on that picture I had to buy in my neighbor state.

This. Akiharaba is ace and all (Yodobashi Akiba was a total wet dream for me!), but there's a wealth of other things on offer, not just in Tokyo. As above we did the Kamakura walking tour with the massive statue and traditional meal. Really enjoyable. I found getting around on the tube was easy and if your stuck, phone up JapanTours when your over there and book something to get out of Tokyo (World Heritage, Mt Fuji). If your flush you can buy a Shinkansen 2 week ticket for $200 which will give you complete access to the country. Only visitors to Japan are allowed to buy the tickets. It's the one thing I wish I did when I was there.

My god, I want to go back so bad. Japan. What an amazing country.

Just curious... why wouldn't they accept the 2000 notes?

The machines aren't designed to read them. It's just as simple as that.

But if you have 2000 yen notes, they are gladly accepted although you may get a look of bewliderment from the clerk you are paying. I've noticed only travellers seem to carry 2000 yen notes. I don't think most businesses would hand them off in Japan for the main reason that it would inconvenience their customers. Go Japan customer service!

Think of it this way, it's kind of like carrying around a sack of pennies. It's money, but it's useless in machines, unless you use it at a store. At least a 2000 yen note is easier to spend than a penny.

Also, since you are in Japan, you may want to grab a Tokyo travel book from your local book store before you leave for Japan at the very least or pint out a few pages from a website. There are tons of spots to check out just within the Yamanote JR loop line if you're willing to leave your comfort zone. If anything, check out Asakusa and Odaiba if possible. Shibuya is another photo spot just to show your frineds back at home how crowded with humanity a place can get.

Edit:I left out a letter in notE.

Thanks for all the tips...
I actually speak well enough (at least here in the states) to get by the few days I'm there...

as for the 2000 yen notes...sounds like perfect payment for the nex...

Alright, I have a couple pictures to post up now. A lot of this stuff is from up to 2 months ago since I've been a bit lax in posting pick ups. But here we go.

I built a pretty much entirely new PC.

That stupid wireless USB thing on the front is gone now in favor of a PCI card.
That cpu cooler is badass, dropped the max temps on an 1.3 GHz overclocked i5 by 40 C.

Then we've got actual non computer pick ups.

Band of Brothers and V for Vendetta I picked up at a Chapters a while ago.
Guild Wars 2 art book was a freebie at PAX.
The Bud Light toque I won at a pub.
