While I agree with a lot of these awards, the "popular vote" mechanic gave ME3 RPG of the year over Persona 4 Golden. Eesh.
All these are good people:

So a downloadable 2 hour title beating the biggest franchises to GotY means the whole year is shit. Way to logic.
I'm not saying the whole year was shit, I'm saying the high profile AAA games didn't deliver like years past.
DQ'd?
I guess that's what you get when you only have 1 game on your GoTY list.MuseManMike

I don't played enough games of 2012 im honest was a year of LTTP
Oh look, NeoGAF's top three is the same as every publication's top three
Some of this year's hyped up/big budget releases:
Mass Effect 3
Halo 4
Assassin's Creed III
Diablo III
Yeah, that's a controversial, disappointing bunch there : /
A lot of games got pushed to 2013, too. Probably for the better.I agree with this.
If you asked me at this point last year what I thought the best games of 2012 would be (ignoring when some games were actually announced and delays), I would have guessed Mass Effect 3 and Assassin's Creed 3 and I was massively disappointed by both those games.
I'm not saying the whole year was shit, I'm saying the high profile AAA games didn't deliver like years past.
I like how Atelier always has a strong showing in this particular metric.High Quality Award

05. Atelier Meruru: The Apprentice of Arland (2.80)
Natural Selection 2 not even in the top 100...
This somewhat happened to me? I don't play that many PC games anymore, and I used to be really into the point and click genre in the past, but this year ended up pushing me back into that direction. My list, for example..I tend to enjoy platformers and RPGs, and 2012 wasn't a sterling year for either. Now that I think about it, my list had a lot more genre diversity than usual:
1) FPS
2) Roguelike/Sim
3) Platformer/Stealth
4) Point and Click Adventure
5) Strategy
6) Point and Click Adventure (although dialogue trees are the central mechanic)
7) Puzzle
8) Whatever the hell genre Dikembe Mutombo would be
9) Platformer
10) Murder Puzzle Simulator?
2012 pushed me out of my comfort zone to find good games, for better or worse
It's absolutely bonkers to me that it's not more popular on GAF.
And for how much scorn ME3's ending spurned and how some of us like myself were disappointed with the game beyond the ending itself... it just BARELY missed that top 5, and I think I seriously would prefer it over the other big hyped up AAA games of last year anyway. It may say something that the game everyone blew up about to the point it was actually catching headlines at more mainstream news places is STILL preferable to the other AAA alternatives. The fact that none of those made the top 5, and three out of the top 5 are completely new IP...yeah.
The term of art you're actually reaching for is "interactive fiction".
Nah despite its flaws it offered tons of fun.SSX deserved to be shunned.

For what it's worth, you were on mine.I was expecting a few people to appear in my affinities like Dark Schala though. Kinda surprised she didn't.
This year was a welcome paradigm shift.
Yes, many of the big AAA titles and sequels did not deliver like I hoped.
But it forced me to go out looking for replacement experiences, and I ended up with some amazing new IPs and very innovative indie titles that this industry has sorely needed for years.
This has been one of the most refreshing gaming years in a long time.

9) Genre Diversity (platform, shmup, bullet-hell shmup, something, I dunno)
10) Visual Novel
Now when you compare that to my 2011 list or a 2010 list I have filed away, this list is just downright weird and out-of-bounds for me since I stick to RPGs and Platformers for the most part.
I did complain endlessly in other threads that I didn't have a game of the year, which is still somewhat true; my listing for VLR just happened for the sake of numbering as it was the game I liked the most, but not enough for GotY. It was simply a weird year overall, with games that didn't stand stand head and shoulders taller than the other stuff this year for me.
A lot of the major stuff ended up being disappointing for me as well (Assassin's Creed 3, Final Fantasy XIII-2, etc.).

I agree. Don't think we can really go back, either - feels like the playing field has been leveled between the big players and the little guys. Next gen will be flashy, but a Kentucky Route Zero or Antichamber will get their due if they deliver just as much as any blockbuster franchise. Great time for the medium. This year was a welcome paradigm shift.

I expect Pikmin 3 to be elevated to GOTY status by starved WiiU owners most likely, much in the same way Kid Icarus appears to have been. We can name it "The Xenoblade Effect".
Kind of sad that NSMBU didn't even chart. I know not a lot of people have Wii Us or are burned out of Mario platformers, but it's easily the best Mario game since Galaxy 1.
1. Journey (GAF rank: 1)
2. Sword & Sworcery (GAF rank: 94)
3. Sound Shapes (GAF rank: 40)

It's nowhere near 3D Land. And even among the NSMB games, I probably enjoyed NSMBWii more.
SSX deserved to be shunned.
Max Payne 3 and Akai Katana Shin in the same category lol. Forgot how silly genres can be in this.
For me, 2012 was a great year. Lots of quality titles.
I'll continue to disregard what a "community" thinks. Like any sane person does.
Code:Riposte 1. Tain (66) 2. Semblance (62) 3. Dambrosi (55) 4. Augemitbutter (50) 5. Codeblue (48) 6. Burning Justice (47) 7. Clairvoyance (44) 7. DarkLordMalik (44) 9. BubblegumCrisis (41) 9. Sojgat (41)
hmm, can't say the top 3 surprises me. If Riposte->Tain is 66 and Tain->Riposte is 65, what does that mean?
EDIT: I agree with Duckroll in saying "Stealth" is not a genre. You can also add: "RPG", horror, and survival.
Are we forgetting the first eight worlds of 3D Land?
