Welcome to the NeoGAF 2020 GOTY voting thread

The format change has carried over so please read the thread. I know we have had quite a few new signups. It's not rocket science and will save you many questions. TL-DR merchants, the link to the form is at the bottom.

Rules
Deadline:
Voting closes January 17th
Minimum votes: Games 1-3 are the only mandatory votes;

How long will it take me to fill in the form?
If you only vote for the three games:
~3-5 minutes
If you vote for all categories (no commentary): ~10 minutes
If you vote for all categories (with commentary): ~ 15-20 minutes (depending on thinking time)

Disqualified votes
Game spamming:
If you use the same game in more than one position, then your vote will be removed from the ballot count. Please bear this in mind for minimum votes above;

A game I want to vote for isn't listed
I tried to include the most common games, and even asked beforehand (also use this thread to get your votes in your head sorted). But if there is one you really want added let me know. It takes an hour to refresh after being added at most. I'll be honest I don't have a huge amount of spare time and this took some effort on it's own. As a result there will definitely be titles that I've missed off. So just drop them here or PM me and I'll add them. I'll ping you in thread with a mention when it's done. Please be sensible! If it's a niche game that is unlikely to be up there then there is a cost/benefit consideration to the time to update etc. Basically just try to mention 'big games' that are AWOL.

They will appear at the end of the list prefixed by an 'X'. Games added so far (only just added, so will appear within 60 minutes of post time):

X - Gears 5: Hivebusters

Can I post my list/choices in the thread?
Certainly. I've hosted it like this mainly for the automation. It makes the demands on my time less. But also, I feel it might actually throw up more authentic results without people getting a flavour for the 2/3 titles that are leading. Having said that, please do share your list or partial list if so inclined, with your thoughts on the games.

Why the three words?
It's hard when picking out an individual quote to really capture an entire communities thoughts, so I'm going to try and capture the most common thoughts from everyone to paint a broader picture. You can see the tag clouds from last year that were built and I'm sure you'll agree they are actually pretty cool. I think it's better that we get a collective feel rather than just picking one or two quotes from a single user.

Eligibility
  • Playable content released this year is eligible. This includes new games, remasters, ports, and so on. There is always a debate on this but ultimately if the content is appearing on the platform for the first time, it could be the first time certain players had the opportunity to play the title. It also provides a nice meta on the timeless quality of certain games, or the current thinking of modern games.
  • DLC, including expansion packs, are eligible to be voted on as long as it's playable.
  • Episodes of games released this year are eligible. In this case the votes will be amalgamated (e.g. different votes for LiS2 episodes will be grouped as LiS2)

Are Early Access games eligible?
No, Early Access, beta, demo, and Greenlight games are not eligible. PC games must reach full release, or version 1.0 in order to be eligible.

Can I update my vote?
As it's form based, no. You need to put your votes in one sitting.

Scoring
Scoring is based on user rankings on a simple ladder scale. Game in position 1 scores 10 points, game in position 2 scores 9 points...game in position 8 scores 2 points etc. There is no weighting in place as this feels like it creates an artifical way for popular games to overtake most liked games

Results
One month away and hopefully will get them up for the 18th January

Extra awards and updates
For the second year, we're trying out dedicated categories for genres. I've condensed them down just so we can trial it and see how it goes. This is maybe in response to saying people thought SMO may be a better game overall, but Celeste was a better platformer. It's beocming more difficult to seperate games or classify them as one genre these days so you may see games in two genres. The genre awards are set to:

- Action/Adventure
- Sports
- Fighting
- Shooter
- RPG (aRPG and tRPG/cRPG are in one category as the genre lines are very blurred anyway these days)
- Platformer

We've retained the category awards for this year as well, which are:
- Best graphical showcase;
- Best narrative/storyline;
- Award for best co-op/multiplayer game;
- Award for outstanding achievement in world building;

Lastly, I've tagged another category for fun, which is GAF's most anticipated game. The criteria isn't as hard as it used to be, just a list of the big titles that have strong indications they will drop next year. Don't take it to seriously, there's only about 12-15 games in there :)
- Most anticipated game

All of the above will have gold, silver, bronze awards.

Happy voting. Look forward to the results! And the discussions below!!

I think I can pick a solid 10 but I can't rank them for the life of me.

I think I can pick a solid 10 but I can't rank them for the life of me.

It's actually a really solid year imo. I think it could be one of the closest top 5s in a while. Usually its just what's first and second.

Ori & the Will of the Wisps is getting snubbed everywhere this year.

Do what's right, GAF. Do what you know is right.

Already did

No Flight Sim?

It's there. I just voted for it as my 2nd choice after Ori based on the amazing technical advances this game represents and even though I haven't played it - I've seen the 100s of videos and screen shots and that's been more than entertaining enough to earn my vote.

Just voted. My Goty-list:

1.) Cyberpunk 2077
2.) Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition
3.) Animal Crossing
4.) My Friend Pedro
5.) Picross S4

Cyberpunk-2077-Artikelbild.jpg

Cyberpunk 2077: The number 1 choice was extremely easy this year, because nothing else comes close. CD Projekt Red created an antire virtual world as a backdrop for an amazingly well-written, interactive story, full of likeable/hateable characters. It's not about whether the game is open world, sand box or whatever: Where other developers give the player one linear, cinematic story and drag you along setpieces, CP 2077 gives the player a starting point, but from there let's you experience your very own "cinematic" story. Except it's not cinematic, as it's all your choice! All the gameplay mechanics work reasonably well and get only more fun the further you progress. Anybody claiming the story of this masterpiece is only 25 hours would also claim that Breath of the Wild is a 2 hour game - both can be true. But you'd intentionally rob yourself of all the great things for no reason. CP 2077 let's you choose how much story you want to see, but everything you see will be great. This game has zero unfun filler content. Can't wait to start my 2nd and 3rd playthrough.

Xenoblade 1 was and is a special game and I'm glad it got a clean HD-version. While vastly inferior to Xenoblade 2 that simply does every aspect better, the first game marks the foundation of Monolith Soft's success at Nintendo and for that I am eternally grateful. "Today, we use our power to fell a god, and then seize our destiny!" is one of the most goosebump-inducing sentences in all of gaming.

Animal Crossing probably saved many people's lives when Corona started in March this year. It was (and is) the perfect quarantine game. Like a bonsai tree, except not as boring. The lack of an option to transfer your saves to another Switch until later this year sucked, as still does the lack of support of cloud saves. But the game itself was superfun. I don't play it regularily anymore, but going back to it every couple months is a great experience.

My Friend Pedro has such snappy, good-feeling gameplay, it's just unfiltered fun. There's cool shooting, there's magnificent, clever platforming sequences, and the bullet time feature just makes it super cool. I recommend this game to anyone who needs a break from big time sinks.

Finally, Picross S4 is like coming home. Nothing new, but that's ok. Because it's Picross.

Overall, a very bad year, not gonna lie. Nintendo's output specifically was awful, only fanboys kept cheering for all those cheap, colorful family-oriented games. I expect a shockingly different lineup next year, with BotW 2, a new Monolith Soft-game (Xenoblade 3 or the medieval action-rpg) and a new Fire Emblem. Also Shin Megami Tensei 5 and Monster Hunter Rise from third parties. This year, however, it was Cyberpunk 2077's easy victory. Still, a very deserved victory. Thank you, CD Projekt Red, you finally proved that you're up there with the best developers in the world. Now just pls get your console ports right and stop sucking Xi Ping's dick, thank you!

Thank you Mods for pinning this thread. It makes it much easier to find it and for people to see it, participate and vote for Ori :messenger_beaming:

I kept forgetting which games came out this year. I played so many on my backlog that it blended together.

man, this is a tough year. FFVII, Cyberpunk (PC), tLoU2, GoT, Spider-man, Demon's Souls, Hades, Flight Sim (amazing in VR with a flight setup). Jesus, this might top 2018, for sheer density of great games.

My top ten this year:
1. Ori and the will of the wisps (it's the best 2d platformer I have ever played and the best metroidvainia)

2. Cyberpunk 2077 (Ok so here me out people are right to be mad but.......I haven't had any real problems with the game, this is the deus ex sequel we deserved and when it's finished it'll be a 10/10 game)

3. Xenoblade Chronicles ( still the best jrpg I have ever played, music still banging, the hardware it's on is holding it back though we need a switch pro)

4. Deathstranding ( Gameplay is too good in my opinion something free and different)

5. Persona 4 golden ( 2nd best jrpg I have ever played, music is banging and the story is top tier)

6. Ghost of Tsushima ( Sucker punch has something here and the fact that it looks so good on 7 year old hardware is a feat that deserves praise, and the amount of content is crazy too)

7. Borderlands 3 (The gunplay really helps this title like a lot and the story wasn't all that bad)

8. Control Ultimate edition (Yeah gameplay was amazing and the metroidvainia aspect of it was fun too)

9. Genshin Impact ( For what this game offers as a Free to play is staggering and it wears it's BoTW inspiration on it's sleeve and I love it)

10. Yakuza Kamwi (First dive into this series and it's fucken awesome)

I feel like Ghostrunner should be nominated in "Best Platformer", even though it's not exactly a platformer... but it's okay.

edit: also, any reason why "Hogwarts: Legacy" isn't an option in most anticipated category? - voted for Gotham Knights instead, as that's probably a close second place for me.

What time is it?
Thank you for putting this together.

Getting to 10 games was rough. My top 10:

1. Animal Crossing
2. Nioh 2
3. THPS 1+2
4. Demon Souls
5. RE3 Remake
6. Shiren the Wanderer: The Tower of Fortune and Dice of Fate
7. Star Wars Episode 1 Racer
8. Mario 3D All-Stars
9. Pikmin 3
10. Hyrule Warriors: Age of Caamity

Ports and remasters everywhere. I voted BOTW2 for my most anticipated but I'd have picked Black Myth: Wukong had it been available.

Too many of those games aren't 2020 games, horizon zero dawn for example, it was confusing edit: i recognize maybe they were released on other platforms, but others besides horizon don't seem to follow that

Lots of games from 2019 in that list. And I wanted to vote for Magic Arena as best online game but it wasn't even there.

I'm sorry if this is not allowed but i have to raise a question here.
Is it fair to have Cyberpunk 2077 included here? many people have not played the game yet, it just came out and its full of issues for many people, its getting updates and maybe next gen patch, plus its a long game that you need to digest to avoid recency bias in your choice and to fully and accurately judge it.
That is why i think it should be on discussion for 2021 GOTY and not for 2020.
I will wait until i finish it to decide if i want to vote for it or not but so far im enjoying my time, i think Hades and FF7 Remake and Half Life Alyx are guaranteed to get my vote as of now.

Cyberpunk 2077 (PC)
Ori and the Will of the Wisps (XSX)
No Man’s Sky (PC)

All just kept on surprising me more than anything else I played this year and is currently among the best ever in each genre for me.

1. Half-Life: Alyx
2. Cyberpunk 2077
3. Doom: Eternal

Horizon Zero Dawn was tied for the third position, but I didn't want to have a 2017 game in my top 3.

The form only let me pick 4 for whatever reason but here they are:
1)Ori and the Will of the Wisps only picked up a few days ago and it was a lovely surprise! but yesterday it shot for a place into my favorite games ever 🥺 it looks beautiful on Switch even only complain are the chase sequences. 👌
2)FFVII REmake pretty amazing reinvention of a classic, characters, combat, setting, music are pretty well done Square gets a 👍 could have been #1 but little Ori is unbelievable
3)Amnesia Rebirth, cool horror game, scary setting.
4)DMC5SE three words: Vergil V Urizen
5)would have been R3make 🧟‍♂️

Will need time to remember all I played, play more Cyberpunk and Demon’s Souls, and maybe get to some other games (Doom Eternal is a main one likely to rank high I haven’t started yet, Gears Hive Busters as well). Will use this post as a tentative list as I finalize my votes.

1. Ghost of Tsushima
2. The Last of Us Part 2
3. Cyberpunk 2077
4. Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 1
5. Hades
6. Animal Crossing New Horizons
7. Spider-man Miles Morales
8. Demon’s Souls
9. Super Mario 3D All Stars
10. Astrobot’s Playroom

Edit: going with this as my final list. I don't see Cyberpunk moving higher for me after 40+ hours and won't have time to play things I haven't gotten to yet before the 17th.
