1) Demon's Souls -- the first PS5 game I played delivered the "Wow" factor in a big way. Easily the best graphics I have ever seen in a video game. It also helps that I never played the original so I got to enjoy the game and its bosses from a fresh view. While Demon's Souls is fundamentally the weakest in the Souls series in terms of gameplay/quality of life, I still got lost in the world and loved hating every death.
2) FF7 Remake -- this is just the purest form of "video game": It just oozes "fun" from every angle. The main story was as great as I remember and the side quests were silly but still engaging enough to complete. While I'm annoyed the Remake was split into two parts, in retrospect Part 1 was worth the full price and I'm excited for Part 2.
3) Last of Us Part II -- while this game was good enough to be #3 on my list, it was overall a disappointment vs. TLOU1 which was one of my all-time favourite games. The lack of multiplayer is criminal for a multi-hundred-million dollar Naughty Dog AAAA game that had been in development for 4 years. This game is a quintessential example of hubris. Druckmann did a lot of damage to the series by allowing the game to take itself WAY too seriously to the point of sucking enjoyment out of the experience. I would vote this my disappointment of the year, which is saying a lot considering Cyberpunk 2077 just came out.
4) Hades -- very fun game with super tight gameplay. While the main story was really interesting and well-written, the side stories unfortunately became bugged to all hell for me and I couldn't complete some key arcs. Upon researching the problem, it seems as though I beat Hades too many times too early, and it completely borked other story loops which couldn't catch up. I tried speedrunning deaths to fix the problem and all it did was make me hate the game so I had to stop.
5) Astro's Playroom -- easily my surprise of the year. I can't believe how good this game is. Such a welcome introduction to the PS5 and its DualSense controller. I truly hope this becomes a trend for all future console releases. The nostalgia trip discovering PS items of prior generations put a huge smile on my face.
6) Cyberpunk 2077 -- I am playing this on PS5 so I consider myself one of the lucky ones. The game crashes constantly and I've encountered 3 game breaking bugs that required a reload and dozens of other inexcusable bugs. The AI is probably the worst I have ever seen in a purported AAA game and CDPR should be ashamed of themselves for putting out a game in this form. With all that aside, however, the core game is fun. Gunplay is good (not great), the overarching story is interesting, and writing/dialogue is strong. This was a GOTY contender but CDPR chose short-term profits over long-term legacy. Probably the wrong decision but only time will tell.
7) Fall Guys -- super fun game that kept me busy for a couple weeks. Free with PS+. It is what it is.
8) Genshin Impact -- deserves recognition as a successful implementation of F2P in a AAA game. Fun game, but I can't help but be concerned by how blatant a ripoff of BotW this game is. I don't understand how Nintendo hasn't sued MiHoYo yet.
9) Rogue Company -- great squad shooter that ultimately lost its momentum. Hi-Rez completely dropped the ball on the e-sports opportunity, instead dumping all of its resources into sponsored Twitch influencer streams. At the end of the day, it's a fitting metaphor for the game. Style over substance.
10) Among Us -- I'm not sure if this counts as 2020 but I think that's how 98% of the playerbase would count it, haha. Probably the best way to characterize it is "the best $5 game of all time".
