I've never heard of the subgenre Jangle Pop. Why do fans (or musicians?) feel the need to put every different melody in a box :p

And I like both R.E.M. and The National a lot. People who feel like The National are boring should listen to some of their old stuff. Matt used to scream a lot back in the day. Songs like Murder Me Rachel and Mr. November are quite brilliant. Can't wait to see them again next month.

Probably most people in this thread disgust of the artist I'm naming next, but I saw John Mayer yesterday. He's such a great guitar player, I really wish he would make an album filled with blues songs for once. Stuff like In Repair from imo his best album Continuum. Funny thing was by the way that he didn't even play his biggest hit Daughters. It's good to see he just does what he feels like.

I really like his cover of Kid A but I think this marks me as a heretic (but I can defend myself with Radiohead megafan bona fides).

I've been catching up with lots of music I've missed out on lately and some new stuff. Capsule reviews (with links and everything)

Los Campesinos! - No Blues - full album stream http://pitchfork.com/advance/265-no-blues/

My #1 favourite band are back baby, yeaaaah! Continuing their steady climb up the mountain of musical maturity, the once feisty kids have become a genuinely brilliant indie pop band. Choruses for days, but still with interesting music to back it up, I'm really impressed by this. Officially out on Monday I believe.

Queens of the Stone Age - Like Clockwork - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RjYZToXuJaM
Now this was a pleasant surprise! Like most aging musos, my mantra for the past decade has been "QOTSA got shit after Songs for the Death", I found the past few records incredibly disappointing. So imagine my shock and awe upon listening to this newie. And genuine return to form and then some, I think this might actually be the best thing they've ever done. It's heavy, it's psychedelic, it's vulnerable and experimental. And it's got some fuckin choons to boot. great stuff.

Bill Callahan - Dream River - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RIqOaJjqJxE
My favourite talky music guy is back. Super minimalist americana , whispered vocals and fuckin flutes and shit. Whenever I hear his stuff I'm staggered by the control he and his band exhibit, it's so nuanced and thought through. Beautiful stuff.

Never knew he covered Radiohead, sounds pretty good.

Los Campesinos are pretty cool. Though I only really listened to their debut album. I should get in to the later albums some more. You! Me! Dancing! from their debut was so good. And Bill Callahans new record is great too. Perfect for quiet moments.

Totally check out the new Los Camps then, you may be pleasantly surprised. They've come a long way from those scrappy kids they were.

Big Boots/Man O War?

Partial credit, I was thinking of Follow Me Around. I never really liked Big Boots. Although I loooove that 70s organ version of Nude.

What Pablo Honey era b-side was written shortly after being signed and deals with Thom's violent anxiety about it?

Bonus question, Radiohead have written two songs about automotive fear, what are they?

Million Dollar Question.

Killer Cars and Airbag. He's got a thing for Stupid Cars... :)

YOU. You are good.

Actually I heard it was Inside My Head (the bit about crashing cars into shop windows and such). I love Million Dollar Question though.

I think we are of equivalent skill level. You win 10 extra respect points!

edit: actually, since you do know your shit, I hope you can help me remember a live radio session that I loved back in the day. It was Pablo Honey era and was kinda elctroacoustic. They played a bunch of songs like Ripchord and Lurgee and ended with Stupid Car where Thom explains that they're usually out of tune when they play it as an encore. I remember the performance being really good but I can't remember what it was called or where to find it...

I think that is Million Dollar Question ("Was always waiting for the crush/The car to drive right through the shops").

My respect-for-you-o-meter was already through the roof, buddy. I feel like you're Westley and I'm Inigo Montoya* and we're fencing in that fucked up pirate film.

*I have the 'tache and colouring to pull that off. Westley is cool, though... *snigger*

EDIT: Long shot (my collection of stuff is at home) but it wasn't "Nothing Touches Me", was it?

EDITEDIT: Saying that, they usually ended sets with "Blow Out"...

I really need to see The Princess Bride, I feel like I'm missing a huge chunk of pop culture by not having seen it.

And you're probably right about Million Dollar Question, I am duly shamed :p

And nope, wasn't Nothing Touches Me... it was some kind of radio interview/session. I feel like I want to say it was on a farm or at least in the countryside... It's shocking, things actually do disappear from the internet!

You haven't seen Princess fackin' Bride?! Columbo's in it!!!

To be fair, Inside My Head is the better song. Around the time Radiohead were still fixated with The Pixies.

Ah, fair enough. I know my Radiohead, but individual live radio sessions is a bit of a gap in my knowledge (as is King of Limbs). I'm intrigued, though...

I agree. The songs from that album were the stand-outs during the concert yesterday. Feel sad about missing that tour.

Fuck that, you don't need a cover to get into them...There work has aged well and is quite accessible...Also they're a much a cooler band than The Beatles.

They're great, and one of the first bands I really got into. I'm annoyed when they tend to get shoved into that whole "Oh they're a pretentious hipster band from Portland oh ho ho" thing because they're great.

The Decemberists are my personal favorite band. I don't think any other group matches their range and versatility. It's hard to believe that these songs are all by the same band.

Veronica Falls are great. Also fun to see live.

Just bought Reflektor at the record store here in Amsterdam. Thought it would come next week so that's a pleasant surprise :p

Yeah this is pretty awesome, better than Zonoscope on first impressions (which was also great).

Yeah. I am digging it more than I did for Zonoscope, initially. The problem I have so far, is that, most tracks sounds similar with the emphasis on house Synth and Africa-rythim of Talking heads. Zonoscope grew on me a lot later just because its diverse and evolutionary style which went from twee-electronic music to full house synth production gradually.

I am hyped for this one though. My hype is through the roof. 2nd of November can't come soon enough.

You can stream teh new Cut Copy Album which is called ''Free your mind'' Here and you know waht; I love it. Soo much Talking head influence. My favourite track is Let me Show you Love

the spiritualized remix is cool

havent listened to copy copy recently i liked their debut back in the day

In love with this album, came out in 2012 but found out about it a month or two ago. They're gonna be a big deal one day I know it. Especially with the current resurgence of 90's influenced indie bands. Lead singer is also twin sisters with the singer from Waxahatchee, they sound almost identical.

Any body a fan of Sufjan Stevens?

Hell yeah! Do you know when he's got something new out, or is this a general call out? I think my favourite record of his is Seven Swans oddly enough. Least bloated, fairly subdued musically, very consistent. But I like pretty much everything from him.

Yeah, Sufjan Stevens is great. Also really like The Age of Adz. Too bad I haven't seen him live yet. Have to do that some time.

Available is also another great early National song, their second and third albums have a fantastic energy to them sucks they ignore the second one live.

Also 80s R.E.M. are amazing

How random.
I used to be a huge fan, but I kind of forgot about him until just a few days ago when Chicago showed up on a random playlist I was listening to.

Suffice to say, Illinois has been featured heavily in my ears ever since

Asking random questions is my forte =)

But seriously, I enjoy conversing with people about music I love. Pretty simple, right?

Don't we all? I see these random questions in this thread coming from time to time. Okay, let's do another one.

Who here likes Spoon?

great time to open the indie thread, I just bought four albums today. I hope we can talk about indie pop/synthpop too since popgaf scares me.

so, about today's purchases... two classics:

Radiohead - OK Computer (1997)

The Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream (1993)

The-Smashing-Pumpkins-Siamese-Dream-300x300.jpg

an almost classic:

Sigur Ros - ( ) (2002)

and a new release:

Austra - Olympia (2013)

You have such good taste that I'm now checking out Austra. Cheers!

The new Los Campesinos is horrid. They've lost any edge they had sound wise, although I will say that their quirky, humorous songwriting is still mainly intact. The vocals somehow went from being charming yet flawed, to merely flawed and annoying. The production features a high-end sheen that makes them sound more 'twee' than ever and acts as musical magnifying glass held over the band's biggest pockmarks and blemishes. Lyrically the album does seem to posses a great deal of depth, covering a larger variety of serious existential issues in a mostly clever and amusing fashion, which would be great if the music behind wasn't so cheesy.

However, I am loving the new Pelican album:

Saw Los Campesino live few years back and because of their performance, I decided to listen to their previous albums. Too bad the new one is disappoint. They lost all the happy feel they used radiate and opted to be a more unimaginative band.
