I really need to listen to more Spoon I like what I've heard but haven't really listened to many albums. Anything you'd recommend?

Spoon is great. I'd start out with Gimme Fiction or Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga, then move on to Girls Can Tell if you like that. Never listened to Transference, don't know how that stacks up to the rest, but those 3 albums I mentioned are really good.

Yeah, Ga^5 is definitely the best album to get to know them. But to be honest, except for their debut album every one of their albums is worth listening to. To me they are one of those rare bands that maintain a certain consistancy of quality troughout the years. With Kill the Moonlight as the slightly better album. A Series of Snakes is by the way the most guitar heavy record by them.

However, I am loving the new Pelican album:

Yup. Best album they've done since Fire In Our Throats...

I forgot this thread was on GAF. Anyway. Digging the new "Unwound" album, Kid Is Gone. It has a great collection of tracks. One of the most underrated bands from the 90's. Here's a sample playlist from the group. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xi7sGgVRo5g&list=TLYJl39b7HiqLqHutcUzAi4DNIvCVDIYZI

The collection of songs have a lot of gritty dark tracks by this group. Amazing record if you like that 90's dark Post-Hardcore sound. You guys are going to dig the drums, so raw.

Wait, they have a new album...? I thought they split ages ago? If not, that's blooming marvellous news.

The album Pampers just dropped proves once again that In the Red is the best rock label around today. Killer record.

Cut Copy's new album have leaked. I'll just wait when it comes out, which is a week from now, to get it.

My hype is through the roof. I am thinking of making the OT!

Saw Local Natives in Amsterdam yesterday. The kick off for their new European leg of gigs touring together with Cloud Control. Cloud Control did very good, new songs sound great live. Local Natives was as brilliant as always. That Sun Hands performance at the end was God tier. I can't think of a better way for them to end their set.

This came out today, in Australia. Really, really loving it. It's been a while since I've listened to something so unashamedly earnest.

Bought some CDs. Have only listened to Pavement and R.E.M. all the way through before.

Total cost:
$10.80.

Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain is such a fantastic record. I hope Pavement will do another reunion tour some time, loved their gig a few years back.

Total cost: $10.80.

damn. my last wave of used cd buys was satisfying but definitely more expensive (25 €). I got:

Talk Talk - Spirit of Eden
The Cure - Disintegration
Bjork - Vespertine
The White Stripes - Elephant

Guys...

Reflektor is probably the best Arcade Fire album ever.

Ok, it's too soon to say that, but I'm really liking it.

It's a heck of a lot better than The Suburbs, that's for sure.

Listening to this EP at the moment. Such a shame Girls broke up so soon, I loved these guys so much. They are just out of my top 10 Last.fm artists with only two records and a brilliant EP. Surely other people in this thread must like this band right?

I probably could've done a lot more damage if I felt like it. Like, $20 worth, and seeing as they were $0.50/$1 each (except the Poi Dog Pondering, which was the 'full' $5), it would've been.... something.

And then there was the vinyl section... got a pretty nice Chuck Mangione album for 5 cents. I like having record stores around.

It's half the best Arcade Fire album ever.

Two thirds of one at best

I guess you didn't like CD1 then? Because that's the popular opinion right now, CD2 > CD1.

I love both CD's about equally. There are some songs that are weaker than others, but overall I think this is a very solid record which is entertaining to listen the entire way through, and I definitely wouldn't shorten it, unlike Suburbs which I felt could had done with 4 or 5 songs less.

Well they were pretty insanely popular weren't they? They had a pretty massive crowd when I saw them in Austin anyways.

I loathe them. :(

Had to Google what Loathe means and I was disappointed to find out :(

But I'm from The Netherlands and over here they played gigs in venues for 300 people tops, no idea they played big crowds in the States.

I liked CD 1.

I loved Funeral and Neon Bible.

Still think Neon Bible is their best record. I'm sure I'm in the minority on that one.

I'll raise my hand and say Neon Bible is also my favorite AF record. Although that is being disputed by Reflektor right now.

Oh, so it's a difference in semantics. OK

Yeah, I can't say I love every song here, but right now I love most of them. And I can't say I dislike any track either (except the Hidden Track which isn't really a song at all). Overall I think it's a very solid record, although I agree to a certain extent with some of the criticisms that Reflektor doesn't flow as well as the earlier records, especially on CD1.

So I think the only indie rock record I really liked this year was The National :<

Oh Vampire Weekend and AF were pretty good too

Hey, do you guys know of any recent indie bands that have a New Wave-y sound? When I say New Wave I'm talking stuff like Devo, Talking Heads, etc., not so much later synthpop.

I liked Speedy Ortiz, but those are the big three.

People can cry mainstream all they like, but they put out consistently great stuff.

National in particular is a band who I feel like will still stand up in 20 years, they can be as mainstream as they please as far as I'm concerned

Mainly for Boxer though

Not Synthpop, but French Films is one band I would really recommend when I hear the word New-wave. They are more Surf Rock New wave than anything else. If you are familiar with The Drums, then these guys are quite similar. And they are bloody amazing.

Golden Sea: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4HrysKg1te0

Latter Days: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f245DvqY8us
Convict: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ViO_hZV4epo

If you want more synth based New Wave, then there is Sakanaction (If you don't mind Foreign music), We are Standard, San Cisco, Glen Check, The Brixton Acadmey, etc...

If you need more recommendation, let me know. I have written a long post some time before to another Gaffer about todays New Wave bands

Album of the year so far is Los Campesinos! NO BLUES so far. It's nearly perfect.

Got the new future of the Left record yesterday, paid money and everything for it. Not all that impressed for far, it's a bit too 'knowing' and tongue in cheek even for them.

Yo, thanks to Fidelis and you, I checked out Los Campesinos!

I have been missing out on some incredible shit with this band. I've had Romance is Boring on repeat during everything I've done for the past week or more. That includes the gym, boning, and going to the post office to pick up some quality comics that almost got lost in the shitty USPS system.

No Blues is great as well.
