Neogaf Rock/Indie/Alt Music Thread (RockGAF?)

http://3voor12.vpro.nl/luisterpaal/playerpage.program.43519250.html

Twenty minutes of Damon Albarn at Dutch festival Down the Rabbit Hole. One of my favourite live performances this year. It was a special night because only hours before the gig Damon Albarn heard the news about his friend Bobby Womack passing away.

I now have seen Albarn as Gorillaz, Blur and solo and everytime was memorable. This guy is so good.
Damn. Don't know if I'd be able to go through with it if someone I cared about just passed away. He looks so burnt out when they kicked into Hollow Ponds, and then completely torn the hell up in All Your Life. Wish I could have been there, I've never seen him live. His album is probably my favorite of this year so far, and it completely caught me off guard how much I loved it.

And people will always miss, all your life.

Leaving the country, (and my data plan) in a few hours. Quick, give me some (somewhat upbeat) albums to check out!

I've been enjoying the Menzingers and the Hotelier if there's anything along those lines, but I'm open to pretty much anything!

You are good people.

If you only want stuff from the last year or two, The Constant One by Iron Chic, Metropole by The Lawrence Arms, The Beauty Between by RVIVR and Titles by Red City Radio for more punkish stuff, Keep Doing What Your Doing by You Blew It!, Whenever, If Ever by The World Is A Beautiful Place And I Am Not Afraid To Die and You're Gonna Miss It All by Modern Baseball for more emo-y.

If not from the last couple of years, No Matter Where We Go by Latterman (in fact all Latterman they are the best), Funtitled by Spraynard and any Jawbreaker albums (most people think 24 Hour Revenge Therapy is best, but I'm more a fan of Unfun and Dear You. They all good though.)

I'm ready for whatever news that will be.

I'm pretty sure they're eager to continue touring btw. When I asked Simon Scott on Twitter to come back to Amsterdam he replied: "@BTTFNL yeah man...after yesterday we want to come back to the Netherlands for sure! Glad you enjoyed it :)". At least the band seems to be willing.

They've been wowed a lot by how enthusiastic the audiences were. Crying people in the front rowes were no exception. In an interview Rachel already said they weren't sure if people were still waiting for Slowdive after all those years. Well we sure did Rachel :D

Slowdive's Facebook: "we have some news tomorrow that we hope some of you will like..."

New album? Full tour?

They said on the radio a few weeks back that they were considering doing an album, so they might just announce they're going to disappear to do that.

Haha, I love seeing them so nice and funny on social networks. They seem to have a blast with this reunion, this is so cool.

I'd love to go to BKS. Hopefully, I'll get a bit richer next year.

Festival tickets are about the same as for ReS, reasonable price. If you can spare the money you really should come. It's a beautiful location and they have had great line-ups for their first two editions.

10+ gigs and nothing close to you. I guess I'm blessed with living in a small country gig wise. Maybe an interesting question, how far would any of you travel for a gig?

Are the numbers after the album how many times you've played the full album or how many times you've played songs off the album?

Not enough Hotelier

By which I mean there's no Hotelier

I've been on an old(er) school kick. Picked up the reissue of You're A Woman, I'm a Machine and have been blasting it at full volume for the better part of a week.

I don't think they're all cornball (twiabp&ianlatd are very good and american football have 1 or 2 decent songs) but I really tried to like the Hotelier record and I think it's pretty, pretty bad. I thought that on the first listen and I even went in for 2 or 3 more. opinion did not change. emo is corny and sucks more often than not

Digging this: Literature - "The English Softhearts" Liked their debut LP (http://literature.bandcamp.com/album/arab-spring) a little bit when it came out but only played it once or twice. Relistened tonight and it's really fun. New track is great too. Jangly britpop (well, they're from PA, but it sounds most like that) with a bit of a garage rock/power pop slant, also just clever and careful enough to feel smarter. RIYL Smith Westerns, Mumm-Ra, Pains of Being Pure at Heart

yep yep yep

So far the best thing I've seen this year. The energy, the audience, the everything. Thrilling experience. Though Slowdive is also in that category for me. This year is shaping up to be crazy again for me. Seeing what I still have lined up I'm not even sure if NMH will stay on top. Especially september will be bonkers.

August 5: Neil Young and Crazy Horse
August 15/16: Jabberwocky Festival (Darkside!, NMH again)
August 22/23/24: Rock en Seine (Arctic Monkeys a personal fave, Portishead)
September 8: Beck
September 9: Damien Jurado
September 10: Massive Attack
October 3: The Antlers (high hopes for this one, venue is perfect)
November 1: London Calling festival (Spoon and Sebadoh)
November 3: Ty Segall

Such a shame Future Islands is coming here on the very same day as The Antlers. That's like the worst planning ever.

Which albums from New Pornographers are worth checking out? I remember liking Mass Romantic when I heard it a few years back, but I haven't moved through their discography.

Also, Slowdive in LA sold out within like 40 minutes. Couldn't get tickets.
