NeoGAF Timepiece Thread Of Fine Wristwatches

I think I narrowed down the watch I want to these two. Which do you guys think will look better? I can't find any places nearby that sell seiko so hard to decide off of stock photos.

Bulova BVA Series 96A120. I was a little offput by the stock photos you'll see on some sites, but once you see it in person, it's quite exquisite. First automatic too :).

1. Is there any watch that you are just dying to get that's in the upper range of that neighborhood (or just beyond)? Because whenever you "settle" for something you can afford at the time, you'll just be disappointed and you wont really enjoy your purchase.

2. Around 1500, i'd be looking at Longines.

Other solid brands in that range: Stowa, for classic German design; Frederique Constant for more classic design. For diver style watches, Ocean7 or Helson. Also, Tag Huer

Dang, everyone is liking the black. I wish I could see it in person to see if it's too dark for my black/gray suits.

I would really advise against it - I noted earlier that I am no fan of its design - but ask yourself...Is this something classy enough to be wearing with suits? Is it classy enough that you'll not be ashamed to wear it 10 or 15 years later? I'm not so sure the answer is "yes" to either of those questions.

If you are going to wear it with a suit, the stainless two-tone one is your choice. That dark grey/black pvd look is fine for casual or military style watches, but not something that should be worn with dressier/more formal attire.

They two tone with the black face looks so bland though.

You're talking about this one right?

No, i was talking about the two that you posted earlier.

But now that you've posted that, I will say that THAT one looks much better than the other two. Still not a fan of the design, but the black face/stainless case and bracelet are far better than the two-tone with accents of the earlier one you posted.

Agreed. I liked the black of the two posted, but prefer that to both.

Which band did you get? I have a Seiko 5 in navy and I was thinking about replacing the band but it's such a weird size. Post pics if you can when you put it together.
I got a black leather band with a slight alligator style look to it, I got the band but have yet to put it on the watch, lol. But as soon as I do, watch porn will come, that I promise.

edit: this is the strap I bought, I went with an XS one because of my tiny wrists: http://www.watch-band-center.com/shop_cfg/watchstrap/LB51RiAllprwN-Uhrarmband-schw.jpg

Another strike against that seiko is its integrated bracelet - you will not be able to swap bracelets, or put a strap on it because of that.

Derp, I'm slow. I'm not sure why I was thinking of something else. But ya, those are the three color combos for the coutura kinetic that I like. I'm not sure which now. :/

Hmm, that's a good point... I didn't think of that earlier. I just want a nice seiko kinectic that's not over the $500ish range. :/ Does anyone know of an alternative kinetic that isn't an integrated bracelet? I think the overall face design is really nice too which drew me to it.

Guys, I'm really jealous of your wrists. My barely 6" around wrist means I can't really wear a lot of men's watches because the case just ends up covering the entire top of my wrist or juts out too much. But I don't want a dainty woman's watch!

I ended up ordering a 34mm from Amazon, so we'll see when it gets here.

I feel like there are more options in the 40mm+ range, but that just won't fit on my wrist =(

its not so much about how big the watch is in mm, but how it wears. A watch can wear smaller than its diameter if the lugs aren't massive, or the watch isn't too high.

I have 6.5" wrists and often wear a 44mm diver -- it is all about fit. If 44 is too large, Seiko will have a bunch of options at 38-40mm.

But if you are finding trouble with modern watches not fitting right, there is also a vast world of vintage watches. Harken back 30-50 years, and Don Draper et al were wearing 34-36mm watches. Go poke around ebay for some vintage Omegas or Longines (or other brands like JLC or Tudor depending on funds) and you can end up with some very classy and classic pieces at good prices.

my wife got me a Timex Weekender as a(n early) birthday present. Looks nice. Only problem is the strap is on the small side. I love the look of the olive strap though. Any ideas of what to replace it with? I'd prefer nylon to leather, and really like the olive green.

Yay, my new watch came! Fits great after I resized it and the face looks a lot better in person.

Looks like you've got plenty of space there too, judging from the top lugs of the watch in relation to your wrist.

Im pretty sure that with a wrist as small as yours you could do 38mm as well so long as the watch doesnt stand too tall off of your wrist.

I got a more casual watch for when I don't want to wear a fancy bracelet. Loving the Seiko 5 military face. I didn't love the canvas strap that it came with, so got a leather one switched in as soon as I got it.

Going to purchase an Orient watch since it seems like they are the best at their price range. Anything you guys think I should know?

Which watch?

The OrientUSA site is having a 30% off sale and they throw in some sort of free quartz watch too. I'm partial to the Symphony series (http://orientwatchusa.com/catalog/product/view/id/1431/s/er27007w/category/7/) and would have gotten one if the case diameter weren't so big (41mm) for my wrist.

They seem to be a decent brand at the price range. Another brand you might watch to check out is Seiko. I like the 5 series okay.

I have the second one on my wrist right now. I dare say, you are a man of refined tastes, good sir.

I guess I owe you guys some shitty pictures :p This is just one of my straps, there is another one I have and another one in the mail.

Camera quality isn't so good due to poor lighting so it's a bit blurry and that, but it looks really nice with that style of strap. Really classy looking but also good for every day use. Couldn't be happier with the seiko 5.

The strap I have coming in the mail is a lot smoother, no alligator style. I'll probably end up using it for my day to day. It all looks much better in person of course.

Been working on getting a collection going, here's what I have so far:

4a8jHl.jpg

Oris Artix Chronograph

usGs5l.jpg

Tag Heuer Carrera Calibre 16

5PXgMl.jpg

Breitling Superocean Chronograph II

I love them all. I have to admit to wearing the Breitling more than any, and I would imagine most watches I buy in the future will be Breitlings. Something about them I just love.

I'm becoming a serious watch worshipper...

I wish I could wear a watch and have it not look bad on me. It just doesn't work for me.

I did see the CEO of my company's Submariner the other day (the one with the blue face). A bit too gaudy for me. I like the one nib95 posted earlier - that's a funky yet sleek looking watch face (here).

Cool stuff though, guys. I like browsing this thread. :p

What about the Ray model? Is it better/worse than the Mako?

It's completely personal preference but I've always liked marks instead of numbers on a watch face like that but depends on what you prefer. I also like that the ray is in blue as well as black. I've liked the look of blue faces lately. There's nothing better or worse mechanically between them, it's just what looks better to you.

Edit: Hmm, they have a blue mako too... I'm not sure then, it depends on if you like the numbers or the marks instead. All I know is the blue face is sexy.
