NeoGAF Timepiece Thread Of Fine Wristwatches

Thanks again for recommending this model, I just spent a great week in the everglades with it and I can confirm it's a wonderful timepiece, especially the chronometer.

Just out of curiosity, I destroyed the original strap when I exchanged it with a maratac, could have I kept it?

You destroyed it? May I ask why?

Imo, it's always a good idea to keep the original stuff. It's just something I would do. The Vostok I have came with a smelly rubber strap. I replaced it but I'm also keeping it.

Well, first I really wanted to have a simple and thin dive watch with a nato/maratac strap for holidays purposes - I am an expert at loosing watch during hols, so better of if it's inexpensive :) - and I received it and the strap the same day I was suppose to leave to Florida.

I definitely could have taken the time to remove the pin properly, but because of the limited time, and limited use of the watch, I really did not care to keep it - although I should have, I agree.

That said it looks wounderful with the maratac, and I do not plan on switching back to the original one, so it's ok.

I don't know anything about watches, but I've had this model for 6 years now, I think. I still love the design.

Heh, only now I read, 'could I have kept it' instead of 'should I have kept it'. So you just cut the strap? I guess it isn't a great loss. But you could have removed the pins without losing the strap.

Either way, everyone values stuff like this differently. I wouldn't destroy anything, even if it cost only 30 euros.;)

I have enjoyed all the awesome time pieces on this thread. I have recently acquired a very nice watch, well I think its awesome.

My dad upgraded his watch with the new TAG Heuer 2013 Aquaracer as usual I was very jealous but hey I cannot complain as I was offered to take over his old Omega Seamaster Pro automatic. The Omega is well used and the strap was shot. I was a bit worried that getting the bracelet replaced would cost a fortune but I was lucky. We popped into an Omega boutique and found a replacement rubber strap, this changes the look of the watch and I like it. The service was superb and I am now a very happy owner of a very nice looking watch.

Seiko Black Monster

Loving the watch so far. Had it about three weeks now.

Also put a brown leather strap on my SNK809, I'll try to get a pic tomorrow.

fellow 2254.50 bro!

Also, you do not UPGRADE from an Omega SMP to a Tag Aquaracer. Your dad actually downgraded. And you lucked out!

If you ever need a new bracelet or any Omega parts, try Otto Frei

I did not want to be the first jerk to talk about downgrade, but I do agree 300%, he does, in my opinion, have a much more desirable watch than his father :)

I have never really understood the love Monsters receive, but that actually looks really nice in your pic. Well done.

Hows the Monster? It has a cult status but I keep reading that the calibre is kind of mediocre.

The 7S26 is a good movement. It's certainly not a high end caliber but my Seiko diver with that movement keeps good time. Usually +-10s a day. They are notorious for being able to go many years without needing service. I don't really need hand wind on a dive watch with a screw down crown. Easier to use the auto rotor. The movement doesn't technically hack but you can "back hack" it.

My understanding is the new 4R36 caliber is essentially a 7S26 modified to allow hacking and hand winding. The 6R15 has other substantial mechanical improvements over the "lowly" 7S26, but I don't think they put it any watches in the $200-300 range.

I will let him know about the downgrade. haha. I tried on the TAG and its too chunky for my wrist. The Omega is thinner and very nicely weighted.

Cheers, I am getting all the certs and document from him soon. I also want to find out when he had it serviced last. I got a quote from swisstimeservices.co.uk and they where very well priced and they are also known for doing a very good job. So I might give them a try on the next service.

I wonder what people think of the new Monster, which comes with hacking and hand winding functionality..
Missed your comment on the last page. So far I'm loving mine. The line is very nice and the watch isn't very bulky in my opinion, although it has some nice weight to it. Its my second automatic watch so I really don't have much experience with time loss or different types of movements.

I would love to pick up a new Monster, however I think I rather put that money toward a different type/model than a different Monster.

Edit: tnx for the response illmatic;)

Thanks the response. One more question though. It seems quite big. Do you find that it carries big/heavy?

I think I like the look of the new one more but it's still too expensive for my taste. The old one doe look a little chunkier though; something I think adds to the character of the watch. I've also read that the band of the new one is a bit lighter. No clue whether this means that it of a lower quality. For now I think I can bring up some more patience to wait.

Aaand, there's another Seiko that has taken my fancy. One with the same calibre.
enter SKX007 and SKX011. Suposedly, this watch will also get the calibre update in the near future.

I'd almost want to buy them both. Must resist!

A quality heirloom watch from your dad is much better than an Aquaracer you buy yourself. And I have an Aquaracer. Awesome score for you.

Are there any tutorial on what watch to buy? I'm looking to spend between 100 and 150 on a watch. I understand that it seems like a puny amount but is there any chance that I might actually get something nice with that?

What do you mean by "nice"? Nice looking? Nice internals?

Do you know if you want quartz, electronic, automatic, mechanical movement?

Dress watch? Work watch? Casual watch?

You can get something decent for the price, Orient does great automatic divers watches for around that price, and Parnis does 'homage' (not replica) if you are looking for something more dressed.

Those are my classic recommendations, you can check the thread I always recommend the same :), but others watch fans could recommend other brands (Seiko, Citizen, Tissot...).

I haven't had a watch in twenty years. I've had my eye on a Seiko 5 SNK807 lately, as it's just a pleasingly-designed, classy watch, even though I can afford pricier models. My tastes run to military/aviator and Bauhaus/minimalist white-face designs. I skimmed this thread looking to expand my horizons a little, and found that a Stowa Marine is probably the most expensive thing I'd ever want to buy. The fine blue hands are just beautiful. I suppose I'm safe from dearly-priced diver bracelets.

In the meantime, a black Seiko 5 with a NATO strap (probably OD) it is!

A thread where we post pictures of our watches as a thinly veiled means of showing off?? I'm in. Bought myself and my wife each a Datejust for Christmas.

I have a Movado and a Rolex for really nice occasions other than that I G shock it.

My friend who is OBSESSED with watches made this huge deal about his rolex or omega how it hand crafted and so accurate blah blah...the other day I ask him what time it was and he took out his iPhone... :/

Huge amount of choice in that price range. Especially if you want quartz. Quartz is especially reliable and accurate. You almost can't go wrong when sticking to the main brands. Seiko seems the to go brand when it comes to affordable automatics. But I bet there are enough other brands that have sub $150 automatics or mechanicals.

Also, check forums like Watchuseek to see if a topic exists for a watch of your choice.

I went through all the watches on there so I must be blind. Thanks!

Edit: Doh the diameter is too much for my skinny wrists. My max is 40mm. Perhaps I will just stick with the cheaper Seiko 5's, but they appear to not be made in Japan according to the comments. :-(

The consensus is that it doesn't matter where a seiko is made. There are some topics on watchuseek about it.

The site creationwatches, that you posted earlier, is considered excellent among the WUS community. Very low prices, low (no) shipping costs, great feedback and apparently less chance of being taxed at customs.

Absolutely cracks me up. The intro is god tier.

"Omega is really trying to be Rolex...and uh, I mean...that spot's already taken! Rolex has it! That's just life! That's how it goes in the big smoke!"

"Omega Speedmaster, it's not a watch that a true man would wear, really. I don't think...I'M SORRY! I'm sorry okay, this is my opinion; this is Archie Luxury's opinion."

"Do you want exclusivity or market share? You can't fuckin' have it both ways, Charlie!"

The guy is funny, but if I want a watch snob despising the world, Watch Snob from Askmen is far more interesting, and his opinions actually make sense...

Wow. Yes watching Skyfall made me want a planet ocean and I went out and purchased one at one of the Omega stores found on every corner.

You know he's totally kidding, right? He's a watch fan with time to kill and a bunch of stock photos. But his trolling skill seems to be masterful judging by the YT comments. I love that the intro to his show is just a series of photos of luggage, watches, and his hilarious face set to piano music. Then he starts laying down his opinions on luxury watches in a harsh Australian accent peppered with f-bombs...

I am not so convinced about that. This dude has hundereds of these videos. And even goes through the trouble of maintaining a website about it as well. Pretty extreme for a joke, I think.

That's what I have, an SKX007. At first, it seemed pretty big and chunky, but not comically huge or anything, like some of those 47mm Panerai watches. And it seems slim in comparison to a Monster.

For a modern diving watch, I think its 42mm size is considered about average. But that depends on your wrist size. Mine are 7". If you have small wrists, like 6", Seiko makes a watch that looks identical to an SKX007 but reduced in size , the SKX013.

But if you have average size wrists, the 42mm is not too large at all. I actually tried on a Rolex Sub Date after wearing the Seiko for a while and the Rolex at 40mm seemed slightly small. But I have an Orient dress watch that is 40.5mm and it's perfectly sized not small at all, so you have to account for the style of watch and the shape of the case and lugs etc. Some watches wear smaller or larger than their size would indicate.

One thing you should know about the SKX00 divers, I've read the metal bracelets are lightweight and rattle prone. I think they have folded end links. The stock monster bracelets are better. So I ordered my 007 on a rubber strap (which sucks by the way) and got an aftermarket oyster bracelet with solid end links from an HK watch modder named Yobokies. It's really sharp and makes the watch look even better.

All together, it's a fantastic watch. One of the best values out there.

My impression is that the SKX00xx models are slowly phased out. I doubt that they'll get any kind of new movement.

I don't think they're being discontinued. At most, they might change the nomenclature, but it will be the same watch. They've been making these style of divers for about 40 years. The latest monsters got the new movement. And they are already putting the 4R16 movement into some Seiko 5s that cost less than a 007. So I think it's only a matter of time before the SKX00 line gets the updated movement too.
But like I said earlier, I don't think hand winding or hacking are must have features in a dive watch anyways.

I like Archie Luxury. He's a buffoon, but funny. A lot of what he says is just to get a rise out of people.
