Just wanted to put out a heads-up on an app that may come in handy. It's called AwesomeHUD (there's a few on the app store, this one is free with IAP... but I didn't buy anything) and it's a basic GPS speedo/compass/clock info app. Beauty of it is, though, is that it has a HUD mode where it reverses the output so you can put your phone on the dashboard and it'll reflect in your windscreen. Very, very cool.

It's definitely worth a shot, especially if you're paranoid about speeding.

This.

Seems like an awfully weird request. No way it will be any more accurate.
Yes, it's more accurate. Not sure how cars are in other countries, but generally in Australia they're clocked at a few km/h higher for safety reasons. The HUD functionality is perfect for long drives (which I was on when I used it) as you can keep an eye on the road without having to tilt your head to check the speed (which, on my Liberty, is analog).

In fact, I'm pretty sure that unless your car has a GPS to calculate it's speed, an external GPS will *always* be more accurate.

I can vouch that some cars in the US are clocked a few mph higher than the true speed. However it doesn't mean it's inaccurate. If you know that it's off by a few just subtract a few miles (or in your case km) off of the total.

Sorry if this was asked in the thread already, but any IRC recommendations? I use colloquy for OS X and it also appears to be the best iOS app. Opinions?

I use colloquy as well, I looked for better options but to no avail. The iOS version is the best I found imo, but I use colloquy on my MBP, too, so that consistency is nice i guess.

So um, are there apps that allow one to look through network shares and open up files, primarily pictures (jpgs/tiffs) and pdfs for the ipad?

I've moved back to Instapaper. As much as I like the UI in Readbility in terms of features and UX it isn't as good imo. Stuff like automatically switching to dark mode, the different scrolling methods, letting you go back to the position you were in if you accidentally tap on the top bar, etc are really nice to have.

Downcast is my favorite app on my phone. Great podcast management that is more attractive in my opinion than Instacast. The gestures are super useful to when I miss something and want to quickly jump back a few seconds.

This.

That being said, I'm no car pro.

+1 (though I wouldn't say it's my favorite app :p).
Gestures are so useful. I can quickly skip commercials while driving. :$

So how is iPhoto?

Just got it and it's looks really good.

I'm only using it on the iPhone but it must be amazing on the iPad. Lots of cool features like super easy sharing, a sexy interface, a nice journal maker and flexible photo editing.

Very happy with the app. Feels like very high quality stuff.

could someone tell me what iphoto does? I bought the app and it sometimes displays landscaped image in the wrong proportion so you need to rotate it to make it right - when it already looks fine in camera roll.

then, in that state, you can't seem to look at photos full screen in it. I'm not a mac user but I'm guessing its bascially a photo managemnt + editing app?

Its quite interactive even on ipad2.

eh played with it more. its for photo editing etc. its okay. Buy lightroom4 for your pc.mac.

just wanted to add that while iphoto is neat; its very home/life orientated which I guess is what the irange is all about. :/ I wish I'd bought a game instead. The interface is very good and useable on it though - I wish you could control the vignette etc. Updates to the app will perfect it.

snapseed is still one of my fav photo manipulators on the ipad. That and photogene.

Anyone know why, after the update to 5.1, my 4s is suddenly showing "4G" where it used to show "3G"?

AT&T brands it's HSPDA+ network as 4G (theoretical downloads of 7.2mbps vs. the 3.6mbps of traditional 3G).

The iPhone now follows the AT&T branding...which is sketchy at best. In a sad way, it comforts me to look down at my phone and see "4G" written there, though. :lol

What are some other things that you like about Downcast over Instacast? I have both and prefer Instacast but I got used to that app first. Thinking about giving Downcast another chance

Is there anything on iOS that plays Divx etc? Could do with something to easily watch tv programmes on my iPad. The alternative, I guess, is to use Handbrake to convert them to iTunes compatible?

It all depends how iPhoto handles RAW.

I am going to the Arctic Circle for my honeymoon in May and I will most definitely be taking the iPad now I've made the jump. I don't use that many features in LR, but it's good to help "fix" a badly exposed RAW image. If you have that sort of control in iPhoto then that would probably be good enough.

I don't think the iPad version of iPhoto is going to do RAW conversion at all...

edit:

ah it does, but:

As an editor, iPhoto for iPhone and iPad is surprisingly robust. The RAW support isn’t perfect (in essence, edits are derived from the embedded JPEG and saved as JPEG),

I actually feel that iPhoto has a ton of editing features.

Definitely more than I'll ever need.

"Apple iBooks brings Real Page Numbers and Intuitive Highlighting in new Update"
One of the largest new features apply to all models of the iPad such as real page numbers. This may not seem like a big deal but many digital versions of eBooks do not reflect the same page numbers of their printed counterparts. Amazon is one of the only other companies that has put a huge priority on digital page numbers reflecting the tangible ones. This is applicable to not only book clubs but helps with reference and educational books.

:lol

Or people can.. call 911?

Also :lol at the reviews.

As a West Virginian I am deeply embarrassed by this app. Governor Earl Ray Tomblin and Division of Homeland Security Director Jimmy Gianato clearly intend to foster a Soviet-style informant culture in our state, and I'm sure other states will then follow like sheep. This app is disgusting and disgraceful and contrary to American values. I call on Apple to pull it from circulation immediately.

Is there an app like Banjo which shows you where people are in real life on a map, but only shows people you're friends with on Facebook etc.? Banjo is cool but I don't care about seeing random people I've never met before.

The March Madness app once again is looking awesome. I LOVE the alerts for close games and possible upsets. Always let's me know what to watch. The people complaining about it being 3.99 for SIXTY SEVEN GAMES piss me off.

So my parents have these Chinese P2P/Internet TV iOS apps (i.e. pps.tv) that apparently allow you to stream many old and fairly new movies and television shows.

I understand why these might be available and skirt by in China but how is it possible that these kind of apps get past Apple's app screening process in the US? And what is the catch with these apps? There do not appear to be any ads. How do they make money?

I think a lot of those companies actually have licensing deals with the US companies now. Some of the apps have implemented IP filters to block you out if you connect from the US now.

For instance, from just a quick Google search:

Ku6 licenses Sony and Warner Bros. TV and film: http://www.screendigest.com/news/so...ontent-to-chinese-video-company-ku6/view.html

Youku licenses from Lionsgate:
http://emergingmoney.com/china/chinas-youku-licenses-200-lionsgate-films-yoku-lgf-chiq/

Tudou licenses to show ABC shows:
http://news.findlaw.com/apnews/dd01de6973b7426797f589a6ab3b32f8

I don't know what PPS status is.

I think the way Apple handles it is the way they handle Youtube, Vimeo, Justin.TV, etc. They hope that the companies respond to takedown requests from copyright holders. Apple can also respond to takedown requests from the copyright owners.

On the websites for those services, they show ads. I think some of the apps show ads too.

Since 2009, all the music studios have licensed all their music to Google Music China, which let people download all MP3s for free, I don't know how that makes money either.

I think a lot of these services are part of a dotcom boom in China, where they're all trying to gain marketshare as much as possible before considering revenue.

God damn the new iPhoto app is amazing. Was incredibly skeptical based on how annoying iPhoto is on OSX. But, wow. Honestly feels like a mobile Adobe Lightroom.

With the new iPad on it's way to my house and this being my first iPad, is there a good site I can go to for reviews on just iPad apps?

Hey guys. Any recommendations for iPad apps that would complement movie and tv watching? I know about IMDB obviously, just kind of would like something a bit better and more polished. Don't know if that type of thing exists or not.

Khan Academy iPad app.
