They may need to charge extra or a subscription for push notifications. Running all those push notifications, sent for every email, on their own servers are going to be expensive.

Sparrow looks great but no push and not being able to set it as the default email client makes it useless to me.

Yeah, Cinemagram is awesome. I can see this being the next big instagram-type app.

Does the Cinemagram app let you do Instagrams too? Or do you need two separate apps?

Also what's the best Twitter app? I read that the official app v4.0+ is bad? I'm still using official 3.5.x

People seem to really have a hard on for Tweetbot, but I've never actually tried it myself.

I have a hard on for Tweetbot as I type this. I used the official app for a long time and tried out a few other Twitter apps and Tweetbot is easily the best one.

I was always someone who didn't get why people kept downloading third party twitter apps, that the official app was good enough and couldn't find what was so bad about to seek out third party Twitter clients. Then I downloaded Tweetbot based on GAF's praise and couldn't believe what I was missing out. Tweetbot by far and away is superior to the official twitter app. It's a must own app imo.

This.

The official app is a joke in that it never updates my account info. I block spammers but they still show up in the official app. Tweetbot doesn't have this issue.

You've only used two iOS twitter apps, the official twitter client and tweetbot?

What makes it superior? I use the official app all the time.

Tweet Marker support & Readability support are two huge things missing for me. Also the new tweets bar that shows how many new tweets there are. And the gesture shortcuts. Just lots more options in general.

Yeah. There's a lot to love about tweetbot but I actually found the readability integration to be the best feature for me. Used to be a pain in the ass to read articles and links that people post on twitter but now it's very streamlined and I love that you can easily toggle it off without going through tons of menus.

I'm cheap as fuck when it comes to iOS apps but tweetbot was worth every penny.

Hey guys just a heads up

2do (the best to-do app IMO) is now on sale for 99¢ down from $9.99

PS it's universal

Nice. I was looking for a new task list app. Granted I've only played with 2Do a little while, but so far it has what I was looking for. Slick and simple on the surface, but with a load of customizations under the hood. The key feature being able to sync with iCloud. Which means not only does it sync with the stock Reminders app, but I can use Apple's iCloud application on my laptop to in turn sync 2Do with Outlook.

Most recently I was just using Reminders since it was easy and had the aforementioned Outlook syncing, but I didn't like the interface and it was a little too simplistic. 2Do takes that and puts it in tab format, and then adds a bunch of other features underneath should they ever be needed.

The OP should be updated with task list recommendations:)

Marco works fast.

What's New in Version 4.1
** Instapaper now requires iOS 5 **

- Six great new professional fonts designed for long-form reading and maximum legibility.
- Full-screen mode for distraction-free reading.
- Twilight Sepia: the sunset-based Automatic Dark Mode can now slightly tint the screen with a sepia tone during twilight hours before going to Dark Mode.
- New gestures to exit an article and return to the list: swiping to the right when pagination is inactive, or paging beyond the top or bottom when using pagination.
- Retina graphics for new iPad.
- Many small bug fixes and improvements.

I think I heard on his podcast he implemented retina changes last october? Or that he put the files in the app or soemthing. IDK. Can't wait to get an iPad on Thursday. I hope they're in stock.

He had prepared for retina since last October then last minute requirements from Apple meant that the text was fuzzy (same problem the Kindle app had) so he had to make some quick changes

C'mon folks, Marco has directed similar jabs at other developers (e.g Google, Microsoft etc) over the years. That tweet was mere child's play compared to what some bloggers were saying when Google unveiled Roboto. If developer douchebaggery were a reason not to use an app then why are you still using Instapaper?

The comparison doesn't hold for me because Marco is a one man show while Google and others are large publicly traded corporations.

Can someone give some examples of what kind of articles they read in Instapaper? I can't think of what I would use it for and I feel like I am missing something obvious.

The links in the Opening post of pretty much any GAF thread would be a good place to start.

*shrug* in the case of the Roboto the criticism was often personal, usually targeting Matias Duarte and/or Christian Robertson for having the gall to design a font. I don't think Marco gets a pass for being a douchebag because he chooses to run a one-man operation

I know Grazing is highly recommended in this thread but I just tested it fairly extensively against Atomic and I'm gonna have to side with the latter. Aside from the interface, Grazing is lacking in a few key areas. There doesn't seem to be a download manager, dropbox support is missing and there's not much in the way of customization; the first time I opened the settings menu I was surprised how sparse it was. There also doesn't appear to be a rotation lock.

As far as performance, both are quick but I did find Grazing to be ever-so-slightly slower on some sites and it did exhibit a bit of checkerboarding on "heavier" sites when zooming and scrolling. The user-agent spoofing is a bit wonky as well; you have to close and re-launch the browser for the change to take effect. With Atomic, as soon as you change the user-agent string, it immediately refreshes the page to reflect the change.

So interface aside, is there any must-have feature of Grazing that I may have overlooked before I move on?

I thought all 3rd party browsers were supposed to be obsolete (speed wise) after Safari got the sunspider performance boost, is that still the case?

I love Atomic. It seems faster, but the number one thing I love about it is fullscreen mode (with tabs showing) and gesture controls. Being able to just swipe down to reload a page is great.

Yeah I'm the same way. I bought it elite 6 months ago and haven't found a use for it. I think I'm doing it wrong.

After all the praise here I just picked up Tweetbot. I'm not seeing the drastic difference so far but it is minutely faster and more functional so I'll stick with it.

It's beautiful, the animations are superb, and the TweetMarker support is fantastic for keeping my iPad and iPhone in sync.

Well, for me, interface is key. 90% of the time Grazing provides me with all the features I need. I can quickly switch to Atomic browser to perform a task whenever necessary and then return to Grazing:

Some of the features you touted I don't quite get though. I generally prefer to send download links to my desktop instead and dropbox integration—what for? Storing Gifs?

itunes question.

I've realized that syncing apps onto my tiny SSD was a bad idea. Is there anyway for me to stop syncing apps without it clearing all apps off my phone?

itunes wording is confusing as hell.

Turn off app syncing, delete them from your computer. I think the only time it'll actually take an app off of your iPhone is (a) if you delete it directly from the iPhone, or (b) tell iTunes to specifically pull it from the iPhone.

Is anyone playing Triple Town?

I'm it's slave. It's amazing.

Puzzle/farming/management/sim/match 3 - thing.

It's free but you have to pay for turns in in-game coins that you earn while playing (you can buy unlimited turns for $2.99) Which, if you get hooked, is well worth it.

God I love Triple Town. Except for the fact that I've been playing it for months and just cannot crack the 250k barrier.

Not sure if Twitter for iPhone supports it, but they added streaming last week which automatically makes it better than anything on iOS

Other than than, it's basically just well built, fast and snappy. Personally I like the double tap and triple tap gestures. Digging into profiles with those gestures plus holding on tweets/avatar/links
