NeoGAF's best of iOS

I'm sure the functionality of the UI is good, but it looks so bad. Basically like something i'd expect to see on android. Since aesthetics is very important to me i wouldn't use melodies.
gMusic's UI looks pretty nice to me. Almost default music player level.

Reason I chose melodies was it's supposed to load faster and less bugs? Who knows. I don't know too much about aesthetics since I've been using android for 3 years, so it looks good to me. lol

Is the grazing web browser still the king for alternate browsing for idevices?

Any more opinions on Fantastical?

I'm very happy using Calvetica, but I can't help the urge to try SOMETHING NEW.

I'll counter that. After trying Fantastical I'm sticking with the stock Calendar. Fantastical looks really nice, and I like how it uses screen real estate better. But on a touch screen I don't find the natural language entry all that useful (I'd rather quick spin a dial than tap out a few words). The loss of the day and week visual views is big for me. Add the loss of creating meeting requests, and the date on the app icon, and I'm not sticking with it.

What do you guys think about making a new/updated Best of iOS list? The one in the OP seems like it's only touching the surface. I was thinking about the same thing for Windows and OS X, as well.

Just something I was thinking about at this moment.

I was thinking of a Best Of Android thread as well.

That, too.

I was thinking of having a the best of in the OP, and a shared spreadsheet with other great apps with GAF members vouching for them.

Something like...

App | Type | Recommended by
Flipboard | iOS Universal | Quick, Face it Tiger, etc.

I have been thinking about this for a while.

Who's making the new thread?

Undo button alone is worth it for me. I can't even count the number of times I've trashed or archived messages accidentally.

The new Gmail update is fantastic, holy shit. The only thing that could become even better are the transition effects; currently they're a bit laggy, even on an iPhone 5.

I assume the previous version of the app was a glorified HTML5 website; what about this one? Feels more native, so to speak.

Thanks to the person who linked McTube Pro. Great YouTube client! I like it a lot more than Jasmine, which i think suffers from too many different panes and clicks to actually get to the video you want to watch.

Definitely include it in the new topic.

What's a good Desktop Remote Control app for Ipad? Not remote desktop, but something where I can use the iPad as a remote control/mouse for my htpc.

Jasmine is overrated. The whole app is so over-designed. I've been using it on iPad but I'd honestly rather use the scaled up YouTube app or even their mobile site and put up with the top bar always showing.

So, I'm in the process of making a new Best of iOS list, and one of the things I'd like to compile for it is a set of apps for newcomers to get them started with their new iDevice. A "Starter Pack", if you will. I have my own set of selections, but I'm sure everyone has their personal opinion on what a starter pack should contain. I figured I'd mix and match everyone's selections. The only criteria would be that most, if not, all should be free. I'd try to limit it to $0.99 if it's not free.

I'm looking for a list of at least 5 apps for anyone who'd like to chip in.

To start, here would be mine in no particular order:
Evernote - Note-taking, syncs to other devices.
Flipboard - News and social aggregation.
Facebook - Official app, social media.
Twitter - Official app, social media.
Score Mobile - Sports tracker for scores, news, updates.
Chrome - Web browser, advantageous for Chrome users for bookmark syncing.
Dropbox/Google Drive/SkyDrive/Box - File hosting service, sync content between devices and computers, advantageous for transferring photos wirelessly without iTunes.

SpeedingUptoStop

will totally Facebook friend you! *giggle* *LOL*
Tweetbot - Twitter client
imo.im - free all in one messaging client
Chrome - browser
Instapaper - read later
Moviefone - showtimes/theaters
TV Guide as a bonus, I use that a lot for reminders and all that.

I'd add TuneIn Radio, Pandora and Songza.

Also Apple's Trailers app and either Fandango or some other movie app.

Clear - Quintessentially minimalist to-do list making app, not as functional as others, but if it's all you need then it's fantastic
Yelp - For finding places to eat nearby
Flixster - For finding movie showtimes
RedLaser - Free barcode and QR code scanner
Shazam - For identifying music you hear
NeoGAF Web App - MUST BE ON EVERYONE'S SPRINGBOARD

Side note: Camera+ is on sale (still?) for $0.99 for the iPad.

I don't have it on mine.

I'm feeling either extreme shame, or death behind me.

I've always had Gmail setup as an Exchange account setup through the Mail.app on my iPhones. Is it worth just using the Gmail app instead? Anyone out there with some pros/cons?
I don't think mailto links will open in Gmail by default (but rather the Mail app). Other than that, I don't think you'd be losing anything since the new app has notifications, etc.

When I try to download on my desktop or phone it says the app is not available anymore or at the moment. Even from the alt link.

DEATH.

But seriously it's amazing for reading GAF on-the-go and you should really give it a shot. I actually post more from the app than on a computer. Even better now after the relatively recent update too.

Fantastical looks great: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/fantastical/id575647534?mt=8

50% off for a limited time.
Wow.. I'm really tempted to try this out based upon how clean and efficient the UI looks alone. I think this in conjunction with Clear might be all I need.

How quick are new mail notifications in the Gmail app? As quick or nearly as quick as push setup with an Exchange account?

I access MobileGAF on Safari on my iPhone, yeah. I just don't have it on my home screen, lol.

YouTube app has finally been updated for the iPhone 5. Airplay streaming has been added too.
Are the videos full-screen unlike their mobile site?

Also, is there a better to-do app than Clear with notifications, degree of importance and such? I see Clear have a character limit. I would also like it to be for both iPhone and iPad.
