Hey, so there's quite a few scientists on Gaf? Nice ;)

iAnnotate seems cool, I may buy it in a few days since I plan on buying a stylus (Wacom Bamboo) for taking note/schemes and now, editing PDFs.
I prefer reading publications on the iPad; less straining than on the laptop. Of course, reading on paper is better, but after a while, you've got a big pile of sheets.

Yeah, having all material on one place and no paper is the reason I bought an ipad in the first place. And reading on the retina screen is for me just as good as reading paper articles.
I really recommend iAnnotate, its got a lot of function for organizing your PDF files.

Just noticed that Sparrow finally got updated with iPhone 5 support. It's a shame that never got push notifications as it would be my default email app if so.

iDisplay Mini (an app similar to AirDisplay, that allows to use your iDevice as a second screen) is free (at least today).
"Mini" means it's only iPhone compatible, no iPad.

I haven't tried it, but I've always been curious about this kind of apps, so I'll check it out once I get home.
AirDisplay is more expensive than what I'm willing to pay for that.
Thanks for the hint it's awesome.

Now that an annoying bug has been fixed - I'm a huge fan of Day One. It's a journaling app that supports markdown and looks beautiful. Can't recommend it enough.

So I bought TweetBot, and set up a Twitter account, but the "Timeline" is not updating in real time (even if I drag down to refresh it), and hasn't added any new tweets in 5 hours, despite the fact that people I'm following have made several tweets. Another company I'm following isn't appearing at all on the timeline... Am I missing something?

I use the same program and I like it a lot. Upload my almost all my books and PDF I need for classes. Also for note taking, noe taker hd is pretty good.

Thanks. Is any app getting around the bans on proper audio support?
Use Plex if you don't need offline support.

I'm planning to go to Tokyo this spring (March~April) for around 7~10 days & will be staying/visiting only around the big 4 (Akihabara, Shinjuku, Shibuya & Chiyoda).

Is there any good Tokyo offline maps for iOS US Store that I can use? Preferably one's with a working GPS & location tagging for stores of interest. Updated train guide to get to those places would be great too.

I cannot recommend MetrO (LINK) enough. It's a very simple premise: You tell it which station you're at, which station you want to get to, and it gives you a list of what to do.

I've been to Tokyo three times now, used it all three times, and it was absolutely all I needed for getting around the city.

That said, I'm used to living in Japan, and I'm pretty good about finding stuff, so if you need more assistance in that regard it might not be enough for you. It's totally free, though, so you can download it and have it as an option during your trip.

Using my iPad mini in Tokyo for the past fee weeks, but not offline. I couldn't find any decent apps anyway so you might be better off getting some Internet.

Actually this has been quite the experiment in terms of me using maps. I never ever used maps prior to this trip, but now I've had to use both google maps and ios maps a lot. Google maps in the browser has been kind of buggy for me (connection issues maybe) with my location loading but the actual map textures not loading. I also have to sign in every 5 minutes and nothing will come up in search results if I'm not signed in. That being said, google maps business/etc listings are clearly superior to ios' and also include train info (the fare too!) but the map textures not showing is quite annoying.

iOS maps on the other hand are inferior in most other ways, but it at least always loads, and the feature that shows that direction you're facing is great. Mostly what I've been doing so far is to find a location via google maps then find the same position on iOS maps, drop a pin, then just use that to get to my end location. Works well enough.

Thanks a lot guys. Keep those suggestions coming.

Go! Tokyo looks like it fits but the train info is quite old now as there are new lines added since its last update of July 2010, also no location tagging.

I live in Japan and I couldn't live without Hyperdia:

If you knew Japanese, I'd recommend Yahoo!'s app

Hmm, what's the difference in use between GoodReader and Evernote?

I would like to have an app where I have documents in each it's own subject folder where I can edit them and maybe use my stylus to write.

I've used the mTrip apps when I traveled to NY and Tokyo in the past years and love them. Excellent offline maps that work marvelously with the GPS and you can place your own POI and share them with others. Really recommend you try the Tokyo one, would never have found my way around without it.

Evernote is mainly a note taking app. Not really used for documents and it wont let you edit anything.

Pretty sure GoodReader is more for annotation and doesn't allow editing.

Pages? Keynote? Open Office?

To be honest there are no great editing apps and it's by far the weakest part of the iPad for me.

I wish Fantastical had the day number icon like the native calendar app. Otherwise it's superior in pretty much every way.

The default Calendar works just fine for my needs. All I do is write down my work schedule on it. Having gone through with a small issue with the default app recently (birthdays not coming off), I do find this mighty tempting.

I replaced the default Notes app for Evernote. For the goddamn win.

I bought gMusic since melodies UI is just horrible.
No complaints from me, except for no "recently" tab. Really miss that from the official app on android.

What about melodies UI didn't you like? I just tried the free version and it's seems okay.

Thanks but I'm looking for an app that can play my google music, not an alternative. I've tried Songza on Android and it's great and all but I want to access my own music I've uploaded to Google.

What's considered the best google music app for iphone? gmusic, melodies, or something else?

I use gMusic and though it's buggy, I haven't really had many problems with it, other than it being about as ugly as you can get. It gets the job done without too much hassle, but I'd be keen for something better.

After months of debate, I bit the bullet on both versions of Tweetbot.

It's quite a premium ($6 in total) for something to send tweets on, but it looks damn fine. Notifications don't seem to be working though. Did the test a few times and nothing happened.

Continuing my Tweetbot love, I ended up getting the OS X version, as well.

If they made a Facebook app, I'd probably buy that, too.

Read a few reviews and ended up buy Melodies Pro. Everything loads up quick and works well. UI seems fine to me.

I'm sure the functionality of the UI is good, but it looks so bad. Basically like something i'd expect to see on android. Since aesthetics is very important to me i wouldn't use melodies.
gMusic's UI looks pretty nice to me. Almost default music player level.
