Have to say, as a browser Grazing is quite damn incredible! Being fussy I wish it...

1) had Reader or equivalent
2) saved to Diigo or Evernote
3) had a scroll to top/bottom gesture

But still, the awesome full screen mode, quick menu and gestures make it a real winner for me. Love it, thank you!

What's the best GTalk client? I used to use BeeJive but I've grown to hate it. It's stagnant and it sucks. I want something that gives me iOS pop up notifications but with privacy options. Also other than the one in the OP.

If you want Photo Booth but you don't have an iPad, I recommend CamWow. It's free and includes all of Photo Booth's effects. It's pretty odd on a phone because you have to hold it the entire time and can't really fit much in the frame, but it's a fun diversion for the inner toddler in me.

Also, if you're into augmented reality, I highly recommend Duck Hunt AR. Considering it blatantly swipes sprite data from the NES game, I'm not sure how it's still on the App Store after all these months. But nonetheless, it's simple, fun, and a killer time sink too :p

Any other (non-photography) camera app recommendations?

1) Open the Action menu and "Send to.." 'Readability' or 'Instapaper Mobilizer'. Unlike Safari's Reader, this will work on every page.
2) Get the Diigolet (i.e Diigo bookmarklet) or Evernote bookmarklet.
3) Get a Scroll To.. bookmarklet. There are also Scroll to Top and Scroll to Bottom bookmarklets available around the web.

Sidenote: One of these days I'll get around to posting a list of useful bookmarklets for mobile browsers (or keep bugging giga to do it). They are very useful workarounds for when the browser isn't fully featured e.g. if Grazing Browser didn't have action menu for solution 1, you could have grabbed the readability bookmarklet which does the same thing (there are also bookmarklets for instapaper's mobilizer and google's mobilizer). It's not quite as fast as a dedicated button but you can use the slipe pad to open the bookmarks folder with one gesture.

Had this on my Wish List, and your post made me go back to check on it, only to realize that it's now free! Picked it up, it's a TON of fun!

Never knew about it until I saw it in the top 25 free. Played the hell out of it so far.

I just want to mention how much I love the geocaching app. I travel alot and it has quickly become my favorite way to pass some time while on the road!

odd imo is the only messenger app recommended.

Maybe some people don't like ads.

Beejive is the most expensive, but it's easily the best.

Trillian desktop users should most definitely use the mobile app due to syncing (also if you are premium on desktop, no ads for mobile, for free!).

If any of you is doing any kind of business with the iPad or iPhone, here are some interesting apps I use :

For invoicing :

iPad : Quick Sale for iPad : Believe me, it doesn't get any better than this one. Slick slick SLICK interface and every option you can dream of. Awesome app. There's also an iPhone version of it but it is far from being as good as the iPad version.

iPhone and iPod Touch : Invoice2Go : I don't use it, really (do all my invoices on Quick Sale), but it's the best I've found for the iPhone.

For credit card processing :

In Canada : Payfirma : I'm using this one, works really well. Didn't use any to compare. It's now universal for iPhone and iPad so it's a plus.

In the US : Square : Never used it but the photos of the interface makes me salivate.

Here's some other apps I really like :

TurboScan : Awesome document scanning app. I almost use it daily to scan receipts. Interface is kinda ugly but it does the job really well. Nice PDF options for output too.

Night Recorder : Allows you to records yourself when you sleep. Activated by a sound threshold when the iOS device is on sleep mode. Can also be used to spy on people's conversations (come on, you know you thought about that too...)

Moviefone (iPad) : Kinda like Flixter, but I think the interface is somewhat better. Also exists for iPhone, it seems, but never tried it out.

Text+ : Nice way to send text messages to anyone (iMessage is awesome, but if people are not on iOS5, it doesn't work). It gives you a new virtual phone number to send text messages from. There's also chatrooms included to talk with people.

I really wish Apple would let go of controlling the default app for things. I know it'll never happen, but I wish we could define what app is used for the camera, or the browser. One of the best part of the iPhone is how things are integrated together but not being able to set what app you use in certain situations hurts that integration. It just sucks in cases like not being able to set the camera icon at the lock screen to launch Camera+ instead. Kinda kills the usage of it if I can't have access to it quickly.

There's an option to make badges appear on the app icon with the day of the month in them.
I don't like it that much, but maybe you find it useful. :p

Pretty neat about getting the date as a badge on the Calvetica app, I never even knew you could do that!

@Greyface - wow, incredible! Thank you. Really loving Grazing (have added it to the OP, it's by far the best of the browsers I've used so far) and some of those workarounds will really help me out. It's a shame there's still no easy scroll to functionality, since it is quite fiddly to load bookmarks and select from there, but really not the end of the world.

On a side note, do you have a problem where if you hold down on a link, sometimes it does nothing? Not sure if it's a bug with the app, or just a problem on my phone.

@talkinghead - I have added Snapseed into the OP, looks to be a fantastic little photo editing app, thank you!

And regarding the best IM app, is Beejive really that much better than imo it justifies the price? The interface, it has to be said, is far nicer on imo too.

what is the best parking app, I want to be able to just push a button that says i parked here, and optionally add any details such as the parking lot floor area, then it will give me directions back using gps directions.

I really wish so, too. I want ToDo to be my default to do app, but if I want stuff in my notification center I have to use the half-assed apple reminders. And yeah I'd rather use Camera+.

Why is AvPlayer HD, an iPad only app, listed over Airvideo which works great on iPhones as well as iPads? Are people voting on these?

I've been doing the same thing and I've yet to find a browser that I really like (really wish Apple would just suck it up and let Opera port Opera Mobile over).

I'm currently using Atomic and its passable (loathe the icon though).

I've been slavishly using Atomic since the day I got my iPad. I had it on my phone first, but I don't really do much browsing, so it didn't get used much until I got a bigger device. Now I can't imagine not using it. Safari is just garbage in comparison.

You're right about that icon though. It could stand a simpler reboot.

I was a much bigger fan of the red planet which graced the original icon. I remember the dev of atomic getting some guff on macrumors (probably other places as well) about the icon and hence the change.

So, question/clarification. Does Instapaper let you mark articles on your computer, which get sent to your iPhone or whatever? Or do you have to find the articles through your phone?

AVPlayer plays local files on your ipad, Air Video streams remote files from your PC.

You can mark articles to read later from your phone or your browser. The article is then converted to a text only format (with some images, depending on the website formatting). Then when you use the Instapaper app, it syncs the text articles to your phone. If you have the free version it syncs the latest 10. Once the sync is complete (5 seconds), you can read the article anywhere you want.

If you archive the article you're reading, it will be replaced by others in the queue, and synced at that moment.

Here's another request for the best VNC app.

I've heard good things about iTeleport, but it's rather expensive.

SplashTop

I cannot stress this enough- It is easily the best purchase I have made

I have purchased iteleport and it's ok... Very complex

Splashtop is designed for low latency... So video (flash video!!) runs beautiful on it

And I love controlling with it.

I actually played Starcraft 2 over 3G with it ... Was the worst build order ever... But I still won vs a very easy computer

The fact it was very usable was my test

it's $0.99(iphone) and $2.99(ipad) right now where the regular price was $9.99/$19.99 respectively

i recommend it to anyone who has a computer on all the time and needs a VNC to do quick things with relative ease. I bought the apps at regular price and do not regret it at all.

I use parkbud. Really nice design either for meters parking (built in timer) or just remember where you park. Used the built in GPS and lets you take a reminder picture and I believe you can add notes as well.

G-Park is the one that Apple used on their adverts a couple of years back, if that helps. (Parkbud sounds a lot better though!)

What exactly puts Grazing over iCab or Atomic? Note, I'd be buying a new browser for my iPhone 4, NOT an iPad. Any help would be great.
Quite simply - the interface. It has all of the features that those browsers have (great search, sharing, adblock, full screen, private browsing) but the interface is absolutely sublime. The gestures are a lot smoother than the two apps you mentioned, and it really looks and feels so unbelievably polished.

It's also worth me mentioning that I fired over a query to them yesterday and I got a wonderful, detailed, personal response almost as soon as I wrote the message. You can really tell that the developers care about this app a lot, and it shows every time you use it.

I have spent a few days using iCab, a few days using Atomic, a few days using Sleipnir and imo none even come close. http://www.grazingbrowser.com/

Grazing Browser has a scrolling feature in the iPad version. Perhaps if you stress the importance to the developers they'll figure out a way to bring it to the iPhone app.

So I clicked the WhatsApp link in the op and it couldn't be found.

I also searched for it directly on my iPod touch 4g in which it came up as WhatsApp inc., and when I clicked that it couldn't be found.

Has this been removed or discontinued or something?

Sorry, yeah that was actually what I emailed about, at which point they told me there were two ways to do this:
1. Using the Thumbpad overlay (tap with 3 fingers to show it) - swipe up then tap for scroll-to-top, swipe down then tap from scroll-to-bottom.
2. Through gesture customization - You can assign the "scroll-to-top" and "scroll-to-bottom" action to any gesture. Just to go Settings -> Gestures
I've now set it so that if I hold and tap left, it goes to the top of the page, hold and top right, it goes to the bottom of the page.

Feels so damn intuitive, easily the best browser I've used.

What country store are you in? Here is the US store link...

It's called WhatsApp Messenger, so do a search for that. It IS by WhatsApp inc., so maybe it isn't available on your countries store...?

Whatsapp isn't available for the iPod or iPad. It's only allowed supported on the iPhones.

Odd that Whatsapp isn't allowed on iPods? I'd have thought that'd be a perfect solution for people to message friends without paying the extra for a phone... although I guess that's exactly why Apple did it :D

Also yup, I couldn't get the thumbpad solution to work unfortunately (my own fault, I'm pretty sure) but if I'm honest, the two finger alternating tap to go top/bottom of the screen is a much nicer solution for me. The browser is almost perfect, just showed a couple of people here how it works and they were just as blown away as I was, and got it right away.

I meant allowed by WhatsApp Inc not Apple, I don't think Apple is responsible for this restriction :/

I'm glad to see more people try out Grazing Browser. I've been keeping tabs on it for over a year and it's amazing how far the developers have come from the humble origins of the app.

Ok, i'm in love with Feedly again, it's just so fucking awesome. Why would anyone buy a reader when feedly is free, integrated with tumblr, bit.ly, instapaper, read it later, and of course your feedly online.

It's so good, smart gesture shortcuts, managing interests into categories, the suggested essentials they show you, seeing the latest from all categories or looking at just apple news for example.

What does any other reader (free or not) have over this?

Also, after downloading so many light apps, the best one is iTorch4. It's not the best icon, but it does have the best functionality and UI. It's great if you want a well preforming strobe light too.

Best converter app imo is the free GlobeConvert, every type of conversion is in there, excellent for currency, and you can manage favorite conversions so you don't have to always apply it.

So essentially, for apps (mostly free) that should be added to the OP (also, add that there's a free version of AirVideo into the OP, and for that matter any app that has a free version);

Photography

Best panoramic photos - 360 Panorama (was free, now $0.99)
Best app for sharing panoramas (which can be viewed in a web browser, even on iOS devices), as well as well as incorporating intuitive gyroscopic interaction into viewing locally or cloud saved panoramas.

Best photo editor -
Honourable mention - PS Express (free)

Internet

Best news/RSS reader - Feedly (free)
An elegant and minimalist feed reader with a very intuitive interface, is packed full of features and has excellent sharing features.

Best Wikipedia viewing - Wiki Offline (free, upgradable to $9.99 version)
Lets you browse through a massive amount of Wikipedia pages offline, and when online all of Wiki. Also save pages and organize them through favorites.

Drawing

[suggestions needed]

Education

Best Space app - SkySafari (was-free lite version now $2.99 / full version for $14.99)
Honourable mentons - [suggestions needed]

Other

Best conversion app - Globe Convert (free)
Allows quick conversion through a favorites management, a variety options, and up-to-date currency rates.

Best flashlight app - iTorch4 (free)
Quick access to the LED flash, SOS and strobe light modes included through a nice and simple UI.

I'm glad you recommended it! Seriously is such an incredible app, and so much better than the other browsers I tried (all of the main ones, fwiw)

And Sentry, I agree 100% with you on Feedly man, the interface is just so much nicer than Reeder I have no clue why anyone would prefer to pay for something when the free alternative is just so much better.

And wow, what an awesome post! Incredibly nice and helpful of you to format it in the exact same way I do, appreciate it, thank you :)

Save for continued development, is it worth the $3 if you already have VLC?

Regarding 3rd party browsers for iOS, I recall some people were discussing the issue where they used some workarounds to achieve the same speed as Safari, but then Apple removed that. How are browsers speed-wise nowadays? Are they noticeably slower than Safari?

Price is a big factor though, and imo will do what probably 90% of users want from it. Makes sense to try that before splashing out $9.99 on Beejive. I'd argue the interface is much nicer too.

Cyan said:

It sure can, it integrates really nicely, and keeps a track of what articles you read, and I believe prioritise articles based on your reading habits quite smartly. Definitely worth a try since it's free.

Battleheart is great, but maybe not quite what you're after. Chrono Trigger is a must, Chaos Rings (also by Square Enix) is worth a look though, maybe Secret of Mana, Mage Gauntlet, and for something a bit different - Squids!

ronito said:

I can't recommend Aralon enough. And Dungeon Hunter 2 is Gameloft's only truly great iOS game. Buy these two if you want something you can sink dozens of hours into.

Also, I haven't played Crimson Gem Saga yet, but it's a port of a 2D PSP RPG so it should be pretty meaty. And then there are the classic point-and-clicks (Broken Sword, Monkey Island, Beneath a Steel Sky).

So much gaming goodness in your pocket - it's truly an incredible thing. <3 iOS gaming
