NeoGAF's best of iOS

Used Waze for couple days, it's awesome that it has text to speech, great as a traffic app. Fucking horrible as a GPS app. It is pretty bad trying to figure out where I live so decides to keep me in an constant circle.

Not really that I know of. There is a word processor app, I think it's Office2 (like squared) that can save via Google apps but there is no reliable, easy way to do it from what I've seen. If anyone else knows otherwise then please let me in on the secret.

Personally, I'm using Pages, dropbox and email in a kind of flow config. If I'm writing on the iPad I'll use Pages. When I'm finished (say, I get home or i'm in the office) I'll email the doc to myself and download the file on my PC which takes maybe a minute all told. And then I'll work on it on a desktop for a while. When I'm finished I'll upload it to Dropbox which I can then log into on the iPad and open the doc in Pages, beginning the cycle all over again. It sounds complex but it seems to work pretty well in practice. Basically, I just make sure I have an up to date version on Dropbox as often as possible, makes everything easier.
I'd use pages if it worked in landscape on the touch/iPhone.

Edit: Can Office2 save when your not on a network?

Whoa, wrong thread!

Anyway, was just checking out Verbs IM and was kind of appalled to see not only is the "lite" version 99c but that it lacks things like persistent login! You have to pay 5 dollars for that. :[ Looks like a nicely designed app though.

What the hell? Feedly is terrible. What is another good free RSS reader I should check out? I see that reeder is supposed to be the best but I'm only checking out free apps right now.

I didn't 'get' Feedly, either. Definitely seemed like an extreme case of style over substance/functionality.

I'll have to check out Reeder

I'm not opposed to pay apps, I just don't want to spend money on apps for something I don't own right now.

Also, at least from the apps I've tried so far instant messaging is a complete lost cause on iOS.

the best apps - the ones that separate iOS from Android the most - cost money.

not a ton - typically less than 5 bucks each - but you can’t get the full experience without opening your wallet a bit.

Oh god, come on. I know this. I'm just asking if there is a half decent traditional RSS reader that is free. I'm just testing out doing all my usual stuff on iOS with an iPod touch I'm borrowing. This isn't some huge indictment of for pay apps.

though i guess i can see how it seems that way

I missed your second post about not owning one yet.

Netnewswire is free and not terrible but it has huge ads on top of the feed list and it isn’t great, either, last time I checked. way slower to update feeds than Reeder and more cumbersome to check feeds

maybe Feeddler?

Yeah, NNW seems ok. I'm more just trying to get a handle on notification center. I have a small list of apps I'd be purchasing if I do go iPhone.

I'm getting VERY frustrated with the way google talk notifications are being handled though. I'm using Beejive, which I still own from when I had the OGiPhone. It seems like basically a huge crapshoot whether or not a notification banner is displayed. And messages sent from other clients/devices don't sync. Its kind of a terrible experience. I can't tell where the problem is coming from.

Its doing the old iOS 2.0 thing of dumping the last 20 messages into your chat window a few seconds after you open the app. Instead of just appearing behind the scenes and throwing a notification your way.

There are all sorts of im and google talk apps available in the store. I know you are limiting yourself to free apps, but there may be something that better suits what you are looking for.

Well, Beejive was like 14 dollars when I bought it. Its something with the way push notifications work in iOS. I had a friend who actually owns a 4S come over to try it out with me and we just checked it out and its doing the same thing on his phone. With a different IM app that he is fond of.

If I can find a solution that allows me to have a sustainable gtalk presence without any worry or hassle of missing notifications I'll be pumped.

Is there something in the notifications settings (in the iOS general settings) for the app that needs changed? Don't have beejive, sorry I can't check it out.

Nah, it's still how this piece of junk still works. There's no way around it. You should be getting banner notifications, though.

Best Email App: Gmail. Been waiting on a native Gmail app forever and now it is here!

You should try using it first.

Flow Powered by Amazon is an augmented reality app that lets you discover information about everyday products around you.

With Flow you can identify tens of millions of products, including books, DVDs, and packaged household items like a box of cereal or a box of tissues.

To get started, point your camera at
- Book covers
- Video games
- DVDs
- CDs
- Or point to the UPC barcode on any product.

Does anyone use the Blackboard app for your college courses? The new update seemed to kill all my content but just want to see if it's just an isolated incident or something widespread.

It used to be fantastic.

Instacast: Best podcast app that I've tested so far.

360 browser is my browser of choice, but pretty much all the 3rd party browsers are good and support a similar amount of features.

Grazing Browser. How did no one tell me about this yet?

It's a great browser, but aesthetically it's still too unpolished (I'm anal about that). The icon is butt-ugly, some of the in-app icons look completely off, and the transitions between tabs/pages is janky and ugly. The functionality is there, but now they need to polish it up a notch.

Huh? I'm genuinely quite fussy about the appearance of an app but I genuinely think it looks great. The interface is incredible.

But is it genuinely incredible?

But seriously, even though I have yet to use it, it looks pretty great for iPad.. iPhone, not as much, but not any worse than Safari.

River of News or Flipboard really. I personally use The Early Edition 2 but if you want free these two are the best.

Reeder is really the best option for both iPhone and iPad. I also use River of News on my iPad, and have Byline (not bad) and Feedly (dislike it, but I keep periodically coming back to it to re-test my opinion since everybody keeps raving about it) as alternate options on my phone. Only issue I have with Reeder is that it doesn't allow for quick/convenient switching between different Google accounts the way MobileRSS does.

What are the best writing apps for the iPhone? I want something that syncs properly with dropbox. Right now, I'm using Plaintext and it's pretty good, but I'm curious about other options. I use Writings on my iPad and I absolutely love it. Too bad they don't have an iPhone app ;(

Yup, Waze is ace, especially for the price!

And damn you guys for making me want to give Reeder another go, despite being incredibly happy with Feedly. Maybe huge lists of news is actually a better way to go once I really get into the RSS thing.

And has anyone tried Week Calendar? So awesome. Simple little touches such as being able to automatically assign icons to events (ie all birthdays have a birthday cake, all football matches have a football etc) is just so awesome. Love it.

Yeah it's pretty solid. Though I think some of the radio stations parent companies have started to try their own apps or deals and have cut into the selection by denying Tunein. >:

TuneIn is indeed a great app, I didn't even hesitate in putting it into the OP.

Speaking of which I've made a few changes:

1) Added in Week Calendar, an app that got a few mentions here, and having just checked it out, was pretty blown away by.

2) A small tweak to the best Light application, since 'LED Light' loads far quicker than the previously recommended app, and is free.

3) Changed the best photo editing app from Snapseed to Camera+. More features and a much lower price.

4) Against my better judgement, I've changed Reeder to be the best RSS app, due to the hating Feedly seems to have got on here lately.

Any recommendation for camcorder app?

Been using procamera, but I'm sure there are better options.

Default camera app is garbage due to almost zero situations where I actually want to film in 1080p.

It's absolutely unbelievable still that they won't let you record in 720p, I mean... what? The difference in the amount of data it takes up is huge.

I just need a document app where I can save while online and offline. Is there such a thing? Also, two recommendations. If you need to keep track of time you worked I was using Hourstracker. As for keeping track of expenses I was using Expensetrcker.

So I went ahead and purchased verbs. It does indeed seem super nice. I think it even uses a form of task completion to keep running for a period of time in the background. Because it has an option that says to notifiy me when the app purges itself. AND the pro version with push notifications is 5 extra dollars. Right now it seems to be performing admirably or at least in the manner I expect. Its an attractive app too, but I can't figure out how to disable avatars and hide offline buddies. =\

If you only need google talk you can get Beejive for Gtalk for free. IMO it's the best Gtalk app.

The appear all at once thing can be annoying but what I have it set up as is it notifies me for every message and my notification banner is set to only show me the most recent. So far it's serving me well.

I also got instacast which is AMAZING compared to the app I've been using for podcast management. I still have some MAJOR qualms about the way notifications/multitasking is handled but I'm starting to fall in love with the idea of getting an iPhone again.

Which is why you should add some of those onto the list!

Heck even 720p takes up a fair bit of space if you have a 16gb phone, or even a 8gb ipod touch.

And for 'reminder' apps. I personally believe 2do is the best in terms of ridiculous amount of features and also that it looks fucking slick as hell. A bit pricy compare to other options, but it's well worth the price, if you 'have a life'. ;)

And that amazon flow app is super slick. I pointed it at a random game box on my desk (dragon quest 9) and not only did it list price, but an embedded trailer link was right there o_O.

Can't wait until amazon is embedded in my glasses.

All the Chinese language learning apps I've seen (ex. iStart Chinese) are geared toward beginners. Any apps for higher level learners? The app store is a mess unless you know exactly what you're looking for sometimes.
