Picked up Verbs and upgraded to pro at the recommendation of many. I like it, but it keeps signing me out of AIM and Facebook at random, in spite of having shut off set to a week. Am I doing something wrong, or is it the app?

Great googly moogly, Comic Zeal has been updated to 5.0!

whoa! it’s finally here. and I notice right away that the developer has added the same Slider UI mechanism that he made for Thinkbook.

How's the new UI? Is it worth upgrading to or is it better to stick with the old?

It took me about 5 minutes of bitching and cursing to get to grips with it (as documented in the Comic app thread) but now I dig it.

My train of thought from the comic thread:

New ComicZeal update has broken my nicely arranged comics and I can't find their new 'edit' button to shuffle shit back to where it should be. Anyone else updated yet?

edit: Seems it's all about this slider thing now. Seems they fixed something that wasnt even broken!

edit 2: So when I drag comics into a folder they don't go by number anymore, they go by the order you dropped them in. This is giving me the shits big time, wish I could roll back the update. :(

edit 3: Go back out, hold a finger on the series, hit 'sort'.

This is gonna take some serious getting used to!

I'm now used to it. It's a nice upgrade. :)

Guys, do you know about some app that let's me track the talk time?
I have 350 free minutes on my phone plan, and after a few days I just can't track who I have called and how much have I talked.

I did a Google search but found nothing. :(

settings > general > usage > cellular usage.

does that do the job for you? you can reset the stats when your plan rolls over each month.

also, some carriers have their own apps that track usage.

or you can try the app "consume" that works with multiple carriers and displays usage stats

Worth upgrading; a lot easier to organize your collection; UI seems more 'fluid' (smoother, I guess, but I didn't have much issue with CZ4).

Overall a welcome upgrade. Dealing with Western/Manga comic styles is integrated well.

Thanks for the answer.
The usage statistics under settings only track the total talk time, I'd need to know the time of the outgoing calls only.

That consume app you mention it seems to only track carriers of USA, Canada and UK.
I'm from Spain, so I guess no luck. :(

I honestly expected it to be better, but I think it could be much worse.
I actually use it.

On another subject, today I was reading about podcast players/managers.
I read quite a bit about Instacast, Podcater, Downcast and a few others.
Decided to download Downcast, and hey it's awesome!
There are two killer features I'm sure I'll love to death. One is podcast subscribing and automatic downloading (which most of the other apps have, tbh). The other one is shortcuts to directly skip 30 seconds and 2 minutes back OR forward. There are buttons to do so and also can be controlled with gestures, so that sliding right, for example, will automatically skip 30 seconds (customizable) forward. No more FFing while I'm in driving and ads start!

Really cool app so far for 1.59€. Recommended!

Is there an app that disables the automatic screen rotation? When I wake up in the morning i want to lay on my side and read my phone but it keeps flipping the orientation.

The feature is built-in. Double tap the home button, and scroll to the left.

I have an AirPlay question.

Certain apps like AirVideo can AirPlay even when on the lock screen, so the video stream doesnt cut. But A LOT of my other apps cut Airplay streaming when the Iphone goes into the lock screen.

Is there a global parameter I can set that enables airplay even when the phone goes into the lock screen?

Put that shit onto the slider switch, hardware mute is for pussies!

It's amazing how terrible most of the popular weather apps are. Weather Channel was my go-to for a while, but it was mediocre at best. How hard can it be to design an elegant, lightweight weather app with a decent forecast?

I'm so glad to have found an app I'd actually call excellent - Accuweather. It's free, it's beautiful, and it gives you the information you want without any hassle. Plus you can set it to the notification center as a neat widget.

Thanks for the tip, trying it right now. I've been wanting a non-bloated weather app with good features and forecast.

On the main screen, you can swipe to get the hourly forecast and click each individual hour for a detailed forecast. And the daily forecast is terrific as well. I just wish they offered a paid ad-free version. It's so beautiful except for that (unintrusive) banner.

One of the best apps for iPhone?

Onavo - it compresses everything and cuts down on the amount of data you use. It's phenomenal!

I don't see what's wrong with Weather Channel? How is Accuweather any better?

Truth. No jailbreak required. Makes my shitty data plan not as shitty.
Does it speed anything up (or give the impression of)? I have heaps of data, but browsing and some other apps are just woefully slow.

Edit: Eh, it's free. I'll give it a crack anyway.

It installs a configuration profile that basically streams everything through their servers. Works pretty well from my experience, saves ~30% of my data usage.
That is pretty damn awesome. I have unlimited data myself but will recommend this to friends, anyone have any bad experiences or objections to me putting it into the OP?

I still can't figure out how it works.

It says you install it and forget about it. How does it run in the background? How does it make your phone connect to their servers? how does it compress what you send/receive?

How can you be sure they are messing with your data?

Check their FAQ on their website, it explains this stuff.

Anyone try Dolphin Browser on iPhone? It's the only good free alternative internet browser app I found, and it's pretty damn awesome. Also allows me to post something to Facebook and Twitter simultaneously.

I saw today 1Password is on sale.

I've been thinking about getting it for a while, but I still fail to understand completely how it works. Can someone explain it a bit?

Questions I have:
- Does it auto-complete passwords? That is, if I want to log in to gaf, or twitter, or to my bank app, will it put the password automatically for me? Or will I have to go to the app to retrieve it?
- Does it work well to store passwords? I started using different passwords for different sites/apps/services a few months ago. Right now, I'm starting to not being able to remember all of them.
- What prevents anyone from accessing my 1Password app? I mean, I don't understand why would I put all my different passwords for different sites under one single password. If I lost this password (the 1Password password (this is starting to sound silly :p)), would that mean I would have lost too all my passwords?

Hope someone can help!

If it's like LastPass (and I think it will have to be) then it'll have its own browser embedded in the software. So you'll click on an account within the software and it'll open within the app - I personally carry on using Safari and just C+P the passwords when I need them.

For password storage they're a godsend - never have to worry about using the same password in more than one place again. On the flip side, I can't stress how important it is to protect this account! I use a second (physical) means of authentication with LastPass, and have an insane master password.

They should offer some means of recovering the password, however it's really much more sensible to make sure you don't forget the password. It's the only one you should need to remember, so make it complex and commit it to muscle memory (I can't reliably write or "spell" my password out verbally, but I can type it out without thinking about it).

Thanks for the answer, it helped clarify all the points but the first one.
I still don't get how (or if) it can auto-complete passwords when browsing the internet using the iPhone or the iPad.

Well, yeah, I read the answer when I went to the app store to buy it, and read a few reviews before.
It can't auto-complete passwords from the iPhone or iPad, you have to go to the app and copy/paste it.

I got the app anyways, I've been meaning to get it for a long time, and I guess it will be useful if only to store the credit card info.

Plus, it was only 5.5 €, and that's only a large coffee at Starbucks, right?
I hate this fucking argument, lol

I haven't used the phone app, but the program stores all passwords on a file locally or via Dropbox - that's how the app syncs with the desktop version of 1password. I suppose at that point the difference is that you are trusting Dropbox not to be hacked and that it is almost impossible to decrypt the file used to store your passwords though.

I assume you can keep the file locally so that there is no risk at all - and that's what makes it different from LastPass. If you don't want someone to keep your passwords for you, you can keep the password file locally so that the only way to get your passwords would be for someone to physically access your phone.

In terms of on the phone itself, the app has both a four digit code for entry and then uses your master password to get into the password file, so if someone steals your phone, you are still relatively safe presuming you have a good password.

Well for me, the look of the Weather Channel app leaves alot to be desired. Accuweather looks alot more modern. I'm going to give it a try for awhile and see how I like it. One thing about Accuweather right now though is it seems alittle busy, but it's not too bad.

Yeah, they haven't updated it practically since iPhone 1..

Yeah, aesthetic appeal isn't something most apps really aspire to. I'm a weather person, so I can list all the features Accuweather has that TWC doesn't, but they're ultimately rather trivial in the face of their massive gap in pure beauty.

Speaking of beauty - for those like me who are absolutely bonkers for the Metro UI in WP7, there's an incredible app called Muzik (99c) that does a shockingly great job emulating WP7's Music/Video app. Let's face it, other than cover flow, the default Music app is not sexy. But Muzik's font, animation, everything is spot-on.

The best part is that the app is basically a skin for Apple's default Music app, so all the usual voice commands, headphone shortcuts, etc. still work beautifully. I love how it displays the artist artwork in the background, so elegant.

It won't be for everyone, but it's more than adequate if you love the WP7 look, but don't love the WP7 app anemia. It's replaced the default Music/Video apps for me, which I would never have expected of any app before this week.

Also, shout-out to the developer Ben Deckys (@cocotutch), who has been fixing bugs left and right for the 4.0 update coming soon hopefully. He responded to my questions in about 15.2 milliseconds :p
