NeoGAF's best of iOS

huh, what a pleasant surprise.

Procamera just had a pretty badass update.

- Steady light (photoflash and permanent flash).
- Volume as trigger (it changes the volume, but probably an api limitation)
- All the kinks and bugs with 4S has been resolved (1080p support available as well as 480p/720p).

I think it is safe to say that, besides the lockscreen boot, this has easily surpassed default camera app completely.

Which is why you should add some of those onto the list! Heck even 720p takes up a fair bit of space if you have a 16gb phone, or even a 8gb ipod touch.

And for 'reminder' apps. I personally believe 2do is the best in terms of ridiculous amount of features and also that it looks fucking slick as hell. A bit pricy compare to other options, but it's well worth the price, if you 'have a life'. ;) http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/2do-tasks-done-in-style/id303656546?mt=8
Thanks, I'm looking to add a video recording app to the OP, but not having a 4S myself it's hard to test, would welcome any recommendations!

2do looks great as well, I remember using it before and ditching it, unsure why, but it definitely looks a lot better than the standard Reminders app right now.

(edit) oh wait up, nice! 480p too, great to have the option for that.

God damn, RedLaser is a piece of junk now, worthless. Bought out by Ebay and the results are just from a few of their select partners.

Does anyone have screens? It seems like the best VNC app. A lot of the reviews sound like they're coming from just the local network though, how does it play over 3G? I don't like the icon, either.

Yeah I know! I mostly just used Flow now. But it probably isn't that useful or people without amazon prime

Wow Tunein is great but I would like to see some add'l features, such as a radio station rating, being able to sort them into folders by type, being able to add your own note on it, etc.

Which app?

Whats a good replacement?
I was wondering this too!

As chick said, flow sounds great, but it's US only and I'm not a member of Amazon Prime anyway, so not a lot of good for me...

TuneIn seems much better than iHeart, but it doesn't have my local KMEL San Francisco station. Says it's forbidden by the broadcaster, but it's available on iHeart. Exclusivity sucks! Guess I'll keep both on my phone.

Does Grazing allow you to download different file extensions to your iPhone, like iDownloader? If not, does anyone have any recommendations for the best app that let's you do so?

Maybe this is the wrong topic to ask in, but is there a solid programming editor/lightweight IDE with solid auto-complete options for the iPad?

Grazing doesn't; it only downloads the default file extensions I believe. Usually, my device is jailbroken and I just use Safari DL but when it's not (

It's complicated. Don't get your hopes up too high. Your best bet is probably Textastic with added support/configuration in/from Text Expander and Textmate. If you'll only be working with one specific language e.g. css, scheme, markdown, python etc, there are other iPad editors that might be more helpful. You could also try this ;)

Thanks for the answer, appreciated. For language-specific apps, do you perhaps have any suggestions for Java and CSS?

I can see Oink (the new Kevin Rose app) replacing both Yelp and Instagram in the future. In fact, I've already started using it more than Instagram, since it has built-in filters anyway.

Regarding Reminders.app, I love how I set a reminder to put the bins out, when I arrive home at 16:40 every evening, yet this morning it reminded me at 08:20 (WHAT?) when I left the house.

Any recommendations for an alternative to the 'Reminders' app please?

Looking at 'Due' which looks pretty neat, but not cheap either: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/id390017969?mt=8

I got TellMeLater a few months before Reminder/iOS 5 was released and I still prefer it. The email/twitter alerts and minders are nice. It's only lacking the location based reminder from what I can tell, but I don't see much of a use for it myself yet.

I have to go through too many menus in the stock Reminder app in order to set the same reminder it seems.

Nice one, thank you! Looks very similar to the 'Due' app in that it's very focused towards one off reminders (someone in the reviews likened it to a post-it note!) rather than actual lists, which is a shame. But still, it looks like a great app and could be very useful, I shall check it out - ty

Reminders is terrible. It's too unreliable to make it useful. I stopped using it because of that.

Grazing Browser. How did no one tell me about this yet?
I'm tempted - it definitely looks very nice - does it import my bookmarks from Safari? Does it open links I select in other apps (Mail, for instance) instead of Safari? Having both of those features would definitely get me to bite.

You can import bookmarks

Unfortunately you cant change the default browser on iOS (without jailbreaking your device first). However there is a bookmarklet that transfers webpages from Safari into Grazing Browser

Sorry but I don't see the appeal in this, really. To have a to-do app that focuses so much on social (I guess twitter/facebook?) aspects seems to have missed the point, to me anyway.

About the only list I'd want to share with anyone is my girlfriend, things like shopping lists, TV shows/movies we want to check out, places we want to go etc, but Wunderlist covers that very nicely already.

Yeah, I currently use Wunderlist and don't really find a need for anything else.

I think Do.com is more geared towards teams and group to-dos. Anyway, I'll give a try once my invite arrives.

So guys what's the deal with comic apps? I have xcomics and the marvel and dc apps but I'd really would like to only use one as much as possible like how I use kindle. What do you guys use? How do you handle your comic purchases? Stuff I'd like to read is you know batman and Captain America and the like. xcomics looks like a winner tbh but I'm not familiar with the scene enough to really know where I should go forward as I'm new to the comic scene. Do comics ever go on sale?

Also, ebook graphic novels?

Comixology.

Thats all you need. Sales change every few days or so too.

Haha okay it actually looks like comixology is what I had already but the icon made me think it was xcomics.... Errrr lol?

Thinking I might grab some comics from the recent refreshes. Figure I may as well jump in when at least the series are at the beginning rather than try and navigate through the web of older stuff right away.

Can anyone recommend a good stargazing or constellation app? I want something where I can hold up my iPhone and see which constellations/planets are out based on where I position the phone. I vaguely remember using something like this on a Droid before...

So I'm really skeptical of iPhone games, but today I tried 4! of them out.

  • Wonton 51 This game rocks. Its hard as shit and only has one level and games last about 90 seconds but its awesome.
  • Phoenix HD This game sucks. it has what are maybe technically impressive graphics but is ugly as sin and just auto fires for you. laughable soundtrack
  • Scribblenauts This game is boring as hell. I remember how hyped I was for the DS version, but for some reason I ended up buying Mario and Luigi instead. Anyway, after the initial novelty of how you can summon anything, its the most boring damn game imaginable. controls suck too, I was trying to give a stethoscop to a doctor and it just wouldnt select.
  • Infinity field its a serviceable twin stick shooter. the visuals are ok, but id prefer games just not go for the warping background a la GeoWars if they don't have the technical proficiency to truly make it impressive. Controls seem ok. Sluggish, obviously since theyre virtual joysticks, but the game is very very slow because of this. there are some modes, including a snake mode. i fucking love snake mode.

I think its applicable for both, but thanks for the link. I'll be sure to use for recommendations, etc.

I just saw you quoted my post from this thread in that thread, thats confusing. But yeah, in general my opinions usually inspire that reaction from people.

What happened to Pocket Flicks (the pay version of Now Playing)?
It's not on the app store anymore. Any alternative recommendations?

in typically salesforce fashion i bet this doesn't talk about to the platform does it?

do we have a bunch of salesforce admins here by chance?

Picked up Grazing yesterday to replace Terra as my browser. So far I like it because of its touch controls. It also lets me do some things that Terra and Safari didn't, like commenting on an NHL board that I frequent.

Thanks for the recommendation on this one!
