NES/Famicom Appreciation Thread

Anyone been running to glitches when getting in or out of the tank in Blaster Master? Playing with a friend right and it just happened to him twice. Once he couldn't quite get back in because the tank was on a ledge underwater and the other time he exited and was immediately stuck on a doorway and we had to reset.

So I guess make sure you're on wide open ground when exiting.

I learned that lesson as a kid. There's a few fun glitches like that in the game. Be careful!

Being able to walk on the ceiling and sticking to the corners of ledges sucks. It should be awesome. But it's not. The environment killed the shit out of me because Sophia kept clinging onto things when I meant to jump. What a stupid fucking mechanic to put at the end of the game, then not let you get used to it, then surround you with spikes. It's so cumbersome and easily the worst part of the game. Well, so far. I haven't fought the final boss yet.

That said, it's the farthest I've ever got in the game and I'm pretty sure now that I can beat it. Even with my quibbles in the spoiler'd section, man, I love this game.

I agree with you, I spent my last two continues on the last area right before the boss because of the mechanic. I was hoping out of the vehicle to kill the lower enemies because I lost my secondary weapons because I had to use a continue. It was working okay. I think I can hopefully get to that area without using a continue now that I'm more comfortable with the stage 6 and 7 boss and hopefully plow through that area and get busy on the final boss.
 
i hear ya guys! so yeah, Goonies is an excellent port, haha

for real, i played the shit out of this as a kid at Riverboat Playhouse, weird that we got a coin-op playchoice but no NES release, no? and D Lo, that reproduction release looks fantastic!
 
Another package of famicom carts arrived yesterday. After cleaning all the pins with rubbing alcohol things seem to be working fine with one concern....

My copy of Lode Runner seems to have a bent pin on one side of the connector; I only noticed it because the q-tip was catching on it.

The game seems to work okay, but should I be concerned that this will eventually fuck up my Famicom'a cartridge slot?

How badly bent? Can you take a picture of it?
 
Reached the stage 3 boss in Blaster Master. Had quite a powered up gun and near full life but lost. Is everyone using bombs on all the bosses? Seemed like I needed to use a distance shot on this one.

Yeah use bombs on most bosses. Going for distance shot on stage 3 is the wrong move. Go close with bombs and it's super easy. You may not even get hit.
 
I'm not sure why I missed it until now, but I just read that an NESRGB mod of an OG Famicom removes the eject mechanism.

I'll snap a picture when I get home. It's like one of the pins lifted itself off of the PCB towards the inside of the cart, very weird.

I dunno if I should complain to the eBay seller or not since the game technically works fine and I only payed $1.25 for it. (pre-shipping cost)

You can leave the top lever, so it looks the same. But yeah there's no room for the board without removing it, the Famicom is too flat.

I've never used the eject on my famicoms or super famicoms anyway really, it feels like something that will break too easily!

Onpoint, here you go. This is alook at the inside of my AV Famicom, as modded by Baphomet. He did a great job, and says it would've been even cleaner (Not sure how!) if there wasn't an issue with the first NESRGB board he installed.



The console itself looks flawless from the outside. Bapho installed a very small switch on the back for the different palettes, and added a red LED for the power switch, but you could always just ask for those to be left off if you wanted the system to look stock.

My problem is I have an NES and an AVFC and I can only afford to get one RBG modded in the near future. The AV is obvious choice for most, but I have collected for the NES for years and just love the original console so much. Eventually, I'll get both modded. In the meantime it will make for a fun comparison point for uninitiated to see a few of the same games running via both RGB and composite.

I'm feeling the angst over which 8-bit Nintendo to mod, right now. I have an OG NES, OG Famicom and AV Famicom.

I was dead set on modding my OG Famicom, but learning that you have to remove the eject mechanism kills my buzz. It's the smallest thing, right? But I'm chasing perfection here, and the thought that it breaks something about the console, however small, bothers me.

A modded OG NES makes a kind of sense. There's nothing more iconic than that machine. I'd love a deluxe RGB version. But I do have lots of Famicom games, a Famicom N8 Everdrive, and an FDS Ram Adapter + FDS Stick. Spending the money on a mod only to lock out many of my games and the extra sound channels doesn't make sense. Not first, anyway. I share your thought that I might mod both Japanese and American consoles eventually.

That leaves me thinking I should mod my AV Famicom. It can be modded and not a thing is lost about its operation. The problem is that it's kind of inauthentic as a "real NES/Famicom"... I want something that really speaks to the era.

Like I said "angst". I'm on the NES RGB store right now, finger hovering over the trigger. OG Famicoms are out of stock until October anyway. Argh.
 
On another note, I ordered a new 72pin connector for my NES.

A replacement for the aging original one? Nope. I replaced the original a decade ago with a "death grip" aftermarket one....... and I've decided I HATE that thing. It was subtly ruining my experience each and every time I had to force a game in or out.

I got an actual Nintendo-made one. The eBay seller seems to guarantee they're in great working condition. Great. Going back to an actual zero insertion force experience...
 
I can't see myself picking up either of the Mini systems even though I'm such a tremendous NES/Famicom fan. At some point, I feel like I've gotten satisfied with the size of my collection and now I'm very rarely adding more stuff. I don't think I've even bought any NES games in 2016.

1 year ago and I would've been all over these little guys just for the novelty. But now, I don't know. I think my collecting days are over. Now, I'm just buying games I want to play immediately upon delivery rather than collecting them for rainy days or for completeness.
 
Oh my god, there is absolutely NO reason for me to own that Mini Famicom, but my wife just said "hey, you want that right? It comes out the day before the boys first birthday, get it for them as a starter set!" >_>; I mean, I pretty much own every game on there....
 
So I started Metroid the other day, to really play it for the first time in my life.

It's hard! But I've been finding secrets all over the place.. Feel like such a badass.. That third area, I call it Crazy Town.. Really annoying area, and I'm working off a map I'm drawing as I go along. Can get confusing since many areas look identical.

But I just met Kraid and beat his ass! I had a crap ton of secret missile upgrades, but apparently after beating Kraid, I've got infinite missile storage, so, that's interesting..

I realize now that I have to beat Kraid and Ridley to enter that room near the start. I'm guessing Ridley is in the 2nd area I call 'alien bubble world', but I thought I had fully explored that area.. Hmm.. Actually there may be one red door I haven't checked out yet, behind a secret wall, so I'm not yet at the end of my rope..

Actually before I found the Kraid boss, I did some ninja level bomb jumping (for about 10 minutes straight) to jump into an area I'm sure I wasn't supposed to be in yet.. Came out a backside after some rooms, found a little Kraid enemy that died in a couple hits, and behind him was a bare empty room with a metal pillar in it. There was nothing in it, and I figured I was meant to come from that way, but after what I think, having fully explored that area, I'm not sure what it is now.. Maybe there's something there now that Kraid is dead.. Hmm..
 
North America got the better end of the library IMO. The choices make sense for each market.

I did this a few months ago but I haven't made the swap yet. I want to swap connectors and disable the 10NES. I actually just ordered a PAL game on a whim today and so if I want to play it I'll need to crack my console open soon...

Cool. I have to get back to this game some day. Still haven't beaten mother brain. Dying to her is such a buzz kill, since you have to grind for energy/missiles after, that I gave up after two tries and just never went back.

I don't think you get infinite missiles though? You get +100 after beating kraid I want to say.

Secret to making Metroid fun: Metroids infinitely spawn and each one you kill you get either 30 energy or 30 missiles. You can fully replenish in about 2 minutes.

You have to pick where to grind.

Before you get to Mother Brain's lair, the best spot is a big area right in the beginning of Ridley's lair. There's a ton of big enemies that give you a lot of health. You can just screw attack across the room and fill up in a few passes.

Oh man, I was thinking that I needed to be powered up before I entered into mother brain's lair... Thanks for the tip, I'll definitely have to give it a go now. :)

Mindblown by this. I only died to Mother Brain once when I played the game, but I ended up starting over again because that was more appealing than grinding for health lol.
 
I just ordered an NESRGB for my AV Famicom. The dream of an OG Famicom in RGB is dead, for now. The stupid removing-the-eject-mechanism thing killed my buzz for it....

It almost seems like an AV Famicom was born to be RGB modded, with its standard Nintendo AV plug. No case modding needed, unless you want a palette switch.

From what I understand, if I wire this to the standard AV plug, I need a Gamecube SCART cable. Anyone know? Just a typical European Gamecube SCART off eBay, any will do?

I think I'm going to attempt the mod myself. Is this crazy? I took a few university courses recently teaching soldering/electronics/etc. With those skills, and online instructions, I think I can do it..... I hope..... lol.

If anyone has recommendations for a good solder kit, I'm all ears....

Halloween themed? Castlevania games are good and I would think that most people have them already, which would cut down on shipping time. Or Nightmare on Elm Street is a total underrated gem, I plan on playing it for GAF Plays 31 Days of Horror this year.

Castlevania is within our price point and, if we don't do it for the club now, it may never be cheap enough again.

Anyone object to doing Castlevania?
 
I'm going to try and beat Blaster Master tonight before the month concludes. We'll see how that goes. I made it right up to the last boss on my previous run.
 
OK so you know how in Ninja Gaiden if you have to descend down a screen you NEED to take the ladder, and if you just drop instead you'll die?

I just did a section like that and I missed the ladder until like the last second, but it transitioned to the new screen so I figured I was safe, must have touched it. Then all of a sudden after the screen transition my character appeared dead floating near the top of the screen next to the ladder and it killed me.

This glitch ever happen to anyone else? Was really funny.

Yes PAL Gamecube scart cable, or NTSC SNES Scart cable. Also the same cable used for an RGB modded N64.

Thanks D. I'll probably pick up a second one at the same time then, to use on my N64 which is yet to be modded.

So the Scart cable I am using on my US SNES now will likely work?

The instructions definitely said a "typical" SNES Scart cable will not work... typical meaning PAL I take it? (because of course there is no "typical" NTSC SNES Scart cable being that US didn't use Scart and Japan used J21)
