NES/Famicom Appreciation Thread

Thanks D. I'll probably pick up a second one at the same time then, to use on my N64 which is yet to be modded.

So the Scart cable I am using on my US SNES now will likely work?

The instructions definitely said a "typical" SNES Scart cable will not work... typical meaning PAL I take it? (because of course there is no "typical" NTSC SNES Scart cable being that US didn't use Scart and Japan used J21)
Yep to all that. Of course there was no official NTSC SCART cable.

I'm a day late but I did it. I can't believe it, my adrenaline was flowing on that last boss fight. I'm pretty sure I was on my last life of my last continue. I didn't realize the final boss stayed in second stage after a continue so that cost me a hit cause I was not ready for him but I still got him.

Anybody make their own SMB2J cart before? I found an old nesdev thread about it but that was from 2006, before Nintendo released localized VC versions of the game.

I'm wondering if the VC versions are emulating an FDS or if they're an official cart-based version of the game that I can flash.

VC version is FDS.

It's a single disk side game with no saving and no loading after the initial boot, so a cart version would be identical anyway though.

Neat, thanks to me sending off my ram adapter to Loopy, he was able to determine that the first revision of the FDS bios was giving the FDSStick some issues. So now there's an update to the FDSStick software that works with the older ram adapters. :)

That MM4 spread in EGM is so great. I just love seeing how graphic designers worked around those odd shapes created by the stitched-together screen grabs of entire 8-bit levels.

I would love to have a database of scans like this, so that any time I played a game I could look it up on a tablet and get every page that it appeared on in various contemporary magazines. Maps, tips, previews, reviews of the day, etc.

Oh, awesome! I just got my FDSStick in the mail a couple of days ago, what an awesome little piece of tech.

Hoping to get some time to play with it today.

Thanks, good to know.

I know it'd be the same game, I just have a weird urge to have SMB, SMB2, SMB3 all as yellow Famicom carts.

Yeah, would be sweet to have such a database of scans like that.

Edit: EGM early preview of MM4 (beta version?),

Here is EGM's MM3 coverage in issues #13, #14 and #15 (August, Sept. and Oct. 1990).

Y'know, the Gen 3 Best Soundtrack thread is wrapping up tonight and... I don't honestly know what I'd rate as the 10 best NES soundtracks. There's a lot of really good ones. And that's not even factoring in how I'd probably mix in some arcade games, too (I mean, Outrun!).

I guess there's some Tim Follin stuff, maybe some Jonathan Dunn, Mega Man 2 is a shoe-in... beyond that, tough call.

Everyone better have Blaster Master.

Nice, haven't seen that one yet (I'm in the area). Hard to beat IPA's and retro games.

I was just in Richmond earlier in the week for work, but I bought this one at home in Calgary. It was quite good, if a little unremarkeable. Tasty IPA, but there was nothing special outside of the label.

Do we know what the title for October is yet? I am looking to participate since I got my AVS.

I think we're most likely going with Castlevania... Unless anyone has any objections. OnPoint, should we make it official?

Castlevania is official. I'll be putting the post together tomorrow.

It's been a year since we started doing the club and we're 11000+ posts in on this thread. You guys think it's time to start the NES/Famicom Appreciation sequel thread?

Holy cow, time flies! It's one of my favorite threads on GAF.

Fancy new thread title, or just the same with IOT2I ?

EDIT: Just realized I never updated the OP with the September game of the month.

I don't think it's that weird. MM2 came out in an era awash in platformers, and they were looking for different things in that era of platforming plenty. They'd probably be more prone to giving high reviews for features like "more levels" or "cooler weapons".... they weren't necessarily attuned to awarding high marks for good balance of play.

MM2 being a classic is something that shakes out in good time.

Yeah, I dont necessarily think its that strange, but in hindsight, it was clearly scored a bit lower than it deserves considering its status as an all time classic, and one of the best plattformers ever.

Anyone got some suggestions for a good NES soccer game?
I looooooove Exciting Soccer on Famicom Disk.

It doesn't look like much, but is basically the Konami 8-bit sports (Double Dribble, Blades of Steel) version of Soccer. And it plays the best of them all.

So only on Disk? I'll have to check this and the other suggestion out.

I'm a fan of Nintendo's simple Ice Hockey as well. Simple yet really fun.

I remember renting when it came out (at age 7) and being amazed at how different it was from all other games. With it's awesome music, variety of stages, variety of fun weapons, perfect controls, and big HP meter which made it one of the least frustrating NES games.

I can't believe playing in 1988 and not thinking it was one of the best NES games.

I thought it was usual to get to 20,000 replies before creating new threads? Not that it matters much.

Anybody getting Kira Kira Star Night DX?

I like the idea of there being brand new Famicom games being released but after the debacle that was 8 Bit Music Power (made by the same people) having quality issues, I'm a bit reluctant to buy this. Games looks and sounds great though!

Hell no. I have zero confidence in their ability to put out an actual working product after that whole debacle.

Yeah 20K replies is the custom

20K is the custom, but I really wish I personally had control of the OP for updating the monthly club purposes.

I'll pick it up.

8 Bit Music Power was busted for people? In what way?

If I recall correctly the carts just didn't work for some people. Also, am I remembering correctly that they hurt some people's hardware?

Did anyone ever dump a ROM of it? I own it but i'm scared to death to open and try it.

Anybody have any articles of this? Mine worked fine on my Famicom and Retro Freak.

The carts were produced in a way that made them non-functional on most actual famicoms. IIRC it was because the rom chips took 3.3V and they didn't have anything to downregulate the 5V that a Famicom gives out. Amateur hour deluxe. The carts work on things like the retron 5 because it just dumps the rom. But not actual famicoms or NES units...

If someone did dump the rom I'd love to have it so I could actually run it on my FC everdrive and finally get to listen to the music.
