Got my NESRGB kit in the mail... but I can't open my AV Famicom until my gamebit screwdriver arrives in the mail ;_; Alas I was tempted by the $1.99 gamebit on amazon but it's on the slow train from China ;_;

I wouldn't have this problem with my OG Famicom or my NES. They just use regular Phillips screws.

If you're really desperate, you can melt a pen cap or something and use to to unscrew it

...now I need to remember how to play this game, ha. I never owned it back in the day but I've played it many times. I love Castlevania so can't wait to spend more time with the OG.

I died on the first boss several times tonight.

As far as I know it supports the Wii Remote and Wii U Pro Controller but nothing attached to the Wii Remote (Classic Controller, etc.)

Though admittedly information on the device seems to be hard to come by so I could be going by bad info.

Yup, between hardcore collectors and resellers someone like me just doesn't have a chance at things like that so I don't even bother anymore, at least in the area I'm in.
 
Popped open my Control Deck (TM) today and finally disabled the 10NES and swapped the the aftermarket 27 pin connector I've been using for nearly 20 years with a refurbished OEM one. Both were as simple as advertised.

I was finally able to play the Asian version of Super Mario Bros I bought in Japan for kicks way back in 2009. Same game, of course, but the music is sped up. Is that an optimization thing? I figured Asian regions were NSTC. Anyone have a clue on this?

Next up is the PAL Classic Series version of Mario Bros that's coming in the mail. I missed it today so I'll get it at the post office Monday.

Welcome back to the OG 72 pin connector fold.

I've found it is a tad more fickle than with the death grip connector. But clean your carts and you'll be fine.

IIRC the Asian systems were strange in that the console and the games are PAL, but it has some type of converter that converts the image to an NTSC signal. Or maybe that was the Korean systems. I definitely remember reading something like this though.

Ah true, I had completely forgotten about that. Wasnt there a late era revision of the original Famicom with AV out? Or was that only the AV Famicom? Anyways, it is quite a contrast to all the stuff we do to get perfect picture :)

On another note, i played a bit of Adventure of Lolo 2 yesterday. I think it is ok, but maybe a little tedious, I dont know. Made it to the third floor before getting bored. I was able to beat Lolo 1 a few years ago though, so guess i might have liked that better?

I car fully clean every cart I play now if it hasn't been cleaned in a while. I use my preferred method (open cart, eraser, alcohol). The carts don't slide in and out *quite* as easily as I remember from the old days but maybe that's because it's a refurb. They might have readjusted the pins. I supposed after a few months of use it will open back a bit. As of right now I don't even have to push the cart down. Seems really rock solid.

Interesting. Yeah, the gameplay doesn't feel faster the music is sped up to the same speed as when the timer hits 100 or less. It's kind of cool - like always playing "under pressure"!
 
I've beaten Castlevania before so I'm playing Simon's Quest instead this October. I can't imagine myself playing this game as a kid and trying to figure it out. I can't even figure it out now. I had to watch play through vids on youtube to see what the hell to even do after a half hour running around. Aside from the that the gameplay is fine. I think I'm better prepared to figure the rest of the stuff out.
 
I think as long as you know about the equip crystals and duck-thing, you will be fine in Simons Quest. Btw, I would love a modern tak on Simon roaming the Transylvanian countryside, either in 2D or 3D.

It's possible but you won't get the additional sound channel from the FDS without some extra modding. At that point I'd just pick up a Famicom or something.

Simon's quest would've been SO much better with a good localization.
 
I'm surprised Simon's Quest hasn't already received a fan retranslation. Or am I wrong? Would love to play a properly translated Simon's Quest though I have heard that the Japanese version is quite cryptic as well. Would love a translation that just makes sense I guess.

The two most substantial ones are 'Redaction'

I played though redaction years ago, it's quite good. I also added some other hacks to the same rom to speed up the day night transition and fix some other issues, I think it was this:

I beat Simon's Quest today. A relatively stress free and easy NES game when it's all said and done. Infinite continues AND passwords, oh my. I wish there were a couple more bosses because I like the general combat in the game and the series. I guess I got the bad ending because I took too long. Oh well.

You dont even need to fight most bosses lol, can just walk straight past Grim Reaper for instance.

The trick is to hold on to the holy water from the beginning of the stage. You can pretty much mash attack and subweapon from the platform in front of his starting point and you should do enough burst damage that you don't need to worry about dodging anything. Basically he'll die faster than you.

If you do it right you'll lock him in place and take no damage. Same with Death.
