Netflix |OT| Where Binge Watching is Encouraged

vatstep

This poster pulses with an appeal so broad the typical restraints of our societies fall by the wayside.
Expiring on 8/1:

The Addams Family
Airplane!
Braveheart
Donnie Brasco
Valkyrie
Zack and Miri Make a Porno

and the vast majority of ESPN's 30 for 30 films. :(

Usually the latest seasons are put up when the new season begins, which in this case is October.

This applies to all TV Shows on Netflix BTW.

Yup. Usually the high profile shows will put up the previous season about a few weeks to a month before the new season begins on TV so people can "catch up" and build the hype.

Don't know if anyone recommended it yet, but I just finished watching "The Last Days" ("Los Ultimos Dias") and thought it was actually pretty good with some wonderful cinematography, though it has the occasionally questionable CG-based background and compositing work in a few places.

It also had a fairly unique take on the premise for an apocalyptic scenario, and though the final act has one sequence that I felt was rather ridiculous I had a great deal of fun watching it. The lead actor, Quim Gutierrez, is also pretty hot, haha.

I watched this a couple of months ago in Canal + ( Spain ). Pretty solid flick.

Guys, what the fuck is up with the black bars on Netflix? I know this is an old issue, but seriously --

Black bars on all four sides. Wow.

Just saw that season 3 of Continuum is up in the US. I hope it's as good as season 2. Still watching the Fringe and Chuck so it will have to wait a little bit.

Best part of Chuck so far is Jeffster when the sisters baby is born.

Graki, is it only for that one movie, or everything?

Just Dredd, though I haven't checked many other movies. Most other movies just have horizontal black bars. I'm on a 21:9 monitor -- my boyfriend rationalizes it by saying Dredd is natively in 21:9, but Netflix/the company that sent it to Netflix cuts it to 16:9, which leads to four black bars.

What device are you using? For future reference, that is called a windowbox.

Windows PC. I'm just sad that, even though a lot of movies are shot natively in 21:9, Netflix doesn't really support it. Maybe some day! It's especially weird since even DVDs support 21:9 afaik.

Looks like you have display mode set to native.

You mean on Netflix or my monitor? I can't find resolution settings or anything like that on Netflix.

Could it be because you have the 3440x1440 monitor rather than 2560x1080. Doubt that high a res is supported yet. What happens if you take your desktop native res down.

I recommend "Annika Bengtzon: Crime Reporter". Good stories and well acted.
From the producers of the Millennium Trilogy and Wallander comes a series of Scandinavian crime films based on Liza Marklund's best-selling novels.

I'm in love with the lead actress, Malin Crepin. 3.9 stars on USA Netflix.

Any other good Scandanavian crime stories? I've seen the original Dragon Tattoo trilogy (the Hollywood version of the first story was OK but not as good, IMHO).

Yeah, that's the resolution. When I get home I'll bring it down to 2560x1080 and see if that works.

edit: No, there's no difference. Aren't the black bars hardcoded in anyway?

Annika Bengtzon is pretty good. If you like "Nordic Noir" and shows influenced by them, I suggest the following on USA Netflix:

Wallander (original) - The grandfather of Nordic noir
Wallander (w/Kenneth Brannagh) - BBC remake is also excellent
The Killing - remake of the Danish show, Forbrydelsen - unfortunately Netflix US doesn't carry the original.
Top of the Lake - New Zealand crime, but very "nordic" in presentation - starring Elizabeth Moss from Mad Men.
Headhunters (Hodejegerne) - If you haven't seen this Norwegian crime film then do it now. It's one of the more entertaining movies on Netflix.
Salamander - Belgian crime, but also very atmospheric and moody in the "nordic" style.
Lillyhammer - Comedy, but plenty of Scandinavian crime - almost a spoof on the genre.

I hope Netflix adds Bron/Broen (The Bridge) soon. Amazon Prime has Maria Wern (Swedish crime) but I haven't watched it yet. Of course, The Fall and Luther also pop up as dark gritty crime recommendations - but they're not very "nordic".

Does anyone know if any region that has Stargate SG1 in widescreen? When I was watching it in Sweden it was widescreen, but they've taken it down now. In Canada it's the 4:3 version.

I watched Particle Fever last night. I can't recommend it enough! Though, the multiverse gives me anxiety, therefor fuck the multiverse theory.

Also, if anyone in this thread isn't familiar with Every Frame a Painting, you should be. It is short quick episodes about film form, and so far every episode has been great. I made a thread about the series too. Its on Vimeo/YouTube, but a lot of the stuff he goes over is on Netflix.

That's a really good list.

My favorites-

Upside Down - if you were a fan of britpop, shoegaze, acid house, the UK drug scene in the 80s, and anything Creation

I Need That Record - if you're a fan of music period, those of us old people that actually remember when there were music stores long before Napster and iTunes killed them off

The Punk Singer - if you were into 90s riot grrl, punk, Bikini Kill, anything Kathleen Hanna

Last Days Here - really good yet super depressing documentary on the addiction and self-destruction of a failed musician

Yeah watched it earlier this week. My brain cant comprehend all that physics stuff but they did a great job explaining and illustrating it without being boring. I recommend it.

I might have missed you all talking about it but I just got done watching Superheroes: A Never-Ending Battle. It is a 3 part series by PBS on the history of comic books and it is fuckin awesome. Done really well with some fantastic information and guests. If you dig comics at all, it is definitely worth a watch.
