Netflix |OT| Where Binge Watching is Encouraged

Watched Inside the American Mob, a documentary series on the mob from the 70s to the 90s. Knew most stories already but it was very good. I can never get enough of the 5 families in NYC.

Alright GAF, someone please help me find the next show I will watch with my wife. Looking for a drama with a serious story and such, but still has some comedy. We just watched Space Brothers and Liar Game on Crunchy Roll, so maybe something like that would help (doesn't have to be Japanese though). We were also a big fan of Misfits, but watched those on Bluray via UK import.

I would prefer something on Germany Netflix due to convenience, but I have VPN to US Netflix as well where my account is created out of. Something on Crunchyroll works too, though I know this is a Netflix thread. We haven't watched too many recent stuff, so there's a good chance we didn't watch it if suggested.

Thanks!

Penny Dreadful maybe? Not much comedy but it's very good imo.
Firefly
Orange is the new Black
Elementary
Grimm
White Collar
Chuck
Fringe

And check out Doctor Who, it can be deadly serious or ridiculous depending on the story, it's not exactly what you're looking for but many people who liked Misfits seem to like Doctor Who as well.

Doctor Who looks confusing. Like there's multiple series? And they're continuous all the way back till 1963? I certainly don't have the capability to watch all the way back to that. Or does it not matter and I should stick w/ the 2005 "Season 1" even though it adheres to the original continuity?

You start with the 2005 series, I think they're up to season 7? Just go into it knowing stuff came before but don't stress it. The show is made for people who weren't even born when the last series was on.

The 2005 season 1 is the best place to start you don't really have to have seen anything earlier.

Thanks for the suggestions. After reading on them, we're split between Grimm and Dr Who. We might just watch both. Grimm is shorter, so that one, then Dr Who I'm thinking. Thanks again!

BTW, I've seen all of Firefly, wasn't a fan when I watched the HDDVD set.
please don't kill me
Supernatural, watched a few episodes, also wasn't a fan and couldn't finish the first disc (before it was on streaming). But I've heard good things about Dr Who and Grimm looks interesting, so we'll look at those. :)

EDIT: Shit and Chuck looks good too....onto the queue with you, too.

Yay, Doctor Who! As others already said, start with the 2005 series, it was written to be accessible with no previous knowledge of the series.

Just a little warning, the first episode is a little bit weird, it takes some time to get used to, so don't judge it on the first few episodes. Doctor Who is a wild ride, sometimes it takes you to the far future, sometimes to the past, sometimes it shows you farting aliens in Downing Street (one of the series not so proud moments). Some episodes are incredible, others are truly awful but somehow I like that about the show, it's unpredictable, it can be anything.

The best part is that the story creeps up to, especially in the first few seasons, towards the end you realize that the hints were there all the time and you realize how the adventures were connected. The later seasons are less subtle, usually hitting you over the head with it but I guess hints would have become almost as obvious as soon as you start looking for them.

Maybe stick to Netflix Germany for Doctor Who, it's supposed to leave Netflix US on February 1st, no such notice is on Netflix germany, it's also nice that Netflix has everything in order, other services like amazon instant video list the various specials separately which can become annoying because they are in continuity and supposed to be seen where they originally aired.

189 titles removed from UK Netflix, a mighty 6 added

http://netflix.maft.uk/

A lot of good stuff gone there like Air Force One, Along Came a Spider, Clear and Present Danger, There Will Be Blood, Star Trek TNG S7.

Quite a lot of stuff has disappeared of late. Zulu must have went recently too.

I watched two episodes of Cesar 911 and I'm glad to seem him go back to the proven formula he had on The Dog Whisperer -- helping people and their dogs with behavior problems. His last, brief show, Leader of the Pack, had a weird premise where three families would compete to adopt a dog, which was just...weird.

Yeah we've been enjoying Cesar 911, he's back to the basics. Dude wears way too much camera makeup though.

2005 seasons definetly were to start. The effects can be alittle cheesy in the first couple episodes, but I learned to love it haha. When I first started the series the first couple episodes started out alittle slow for me. But it really started to grab my interest on episode 4 "aliens of London" and the show grabbed me at the "dalek" episode (ep6).

Ended up watching the first season of Whitechapel, I only meant to watch an episode but I ended up watching the whole first season. It's pretty damn good. It's typical British brevity and only a 3 episodes in the first and second season but it's enjoyable shit that doesn't overstay its welcome. That said, I think 3 or more episodes in the first season could have fleshed it out a bit more but then again the show had a relatively narrow scope compared to shows like Broadchurch. Kinda ironic considering the myth and legend available to them since it's based on Jack the Ripper. Oh and it's London geography porn. However only focusing on the kinda shit east end.

FYI for anyone wondering those all appear to be on US Netflix too.

And looks like "Friends" is up now if that floats your boat (sorry if that's old news).

Ooh, nice. Just saw on the OP that Chinese Zodiac is up? That's the Jackie Chan one, right? I have an acquaintance that is in that movie as a villain (I think). And I love Jackie Chan.

I don't mean to alarm you but you have dogs on your face
Just finished Marco Polo. Very impressed, one of my favorite Netflix shows thus far.

That is new. Just today.

I'm going to watch the old one today with my little sister. I have never seen it.

I watched Fantasia in high school and vaguely remember thinking it was the most boring thing ever put to film. I may have to watch it again to see if I can appreciate it more now as a gen-u-ine adult.

Big releases for Netflix in 2015:

The Fall (Jan. 16): Gillian Anderson (The X-Files) stars in season 2 of the BBC drama about a police detective investigating murders in Belfast.

The Adventures of Puss in Boots (Jan. 16), the latest kids' series from DreamWorks Animation.

House of Cards (Feb. 27):
Frank Underwood has finally achieved his quest for the presidency, but tensions mount with first lady Claire.

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (March 6): Ellie Kemper stars as a woman who leaves a cult after 15 years to start a new life in New York. Tina Fey and Robert Carlock (30 Rock) produce this comedy, originally set for NBC.

Bloodline (March 20): Sam Shepard and Sissy Spacek head a Florida Keys innkeeper family that unravels when a black-sheep son returns after a long-buried tragedy. Kyle Chandler and Linda Cardellini co-star.

Marvel's Daredevil (April 10): Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) is a lawyer-turned-superhero daredevil by night in modern-day New York. Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, Luke Cage and a combined Defenders series will appear at roughly one-year intervals.

Grace and Frankie (May 8): Comedy from Marta Kauffman (Friends) stars Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin as "frenemies" brought together when their husbands fall in love with each other.

Orange Is the New Black (summer): Season 3 picks up
in the aftermath of Vee's death and the Litchfield prison's financial woes.

Sense8 (later this year): Eight characters in different cities are connected by a simultaneous "violent vision" in this drama from the Wachowskis (The Matrix).

Narcos (later this year): Drama about cocaine cartels and the lawmen who try to stop them.

Looking forward to most of these.

Season 2 was accounced today.

Any information if the Marvel shows will be released in all regions?

They should be released in all regions as I don't believe there's been any news that Marvel has made deals with any regional networks.

Shows that Netflix gets tend to be Netflix only unless they're originally produced for TV somewhere in the world (like Lillyhammer and The Fall).

I asked myself that as well, since American sites don't really seem to cover that and only certain local Netflix Twitter accounts mentioned Daredevil. IGN reports though that Daredevil will be released in all regions (April 10th), I assume the other Marvel shows will be the same.
