Netflix |OT| Where Binge Watching is Encouraged

Big Hero 6 (Australia): I didn't enjoy it. I thought it was boring. Although, it had its moments. The animation was great though.

Escape From New York (Australia): First time watching it and it was a fun, action movie. I was in when the explained the premise of Manhattan being a prison. Probably venturing into so-bad-its-good territory.

The second half turns it into a black comedy. I was laughing at a lot of it because of how extreme it got.

It is the same problem as The Guest. The first and second halves are two completely different movies.

Only watched the first episode of Narcos and im a bit disappointed by all those monologues.

Does he talk less in the next episodes or is the amount of narration the same?

There is still narration throughout.

When I first subscribed to Netflix looking for '80s movies, I was disappointed that the Rambo movies weren't on there. I've seen First Blood, but now I can see II and III. Oh, and Mr. Rogers is on there, and I'm looking forward to seeing Monster Squad.

Narcos: Four episodes deep and I'm really enjoying this.

Gone Girl (Canada): I went into this blind. I have seen a few people in the thread mentioned this before, I thought I would watch it.

I have mixed feelings about it. I really enjoyed the first half of the movie. I thought it was a great thriller and mystery up until
you find out the wife is planning the whole thing.
After that point the air is let out of the bag and it drags on.
Everything she did is just too perfectly planned.
Just gets ridiculous at some point.

Rosamund Pike was great. I thought she was excellent.

Good first half, second half kills it. I don't think I would recommend it.

The book is the same way. Honestly the first half of the book is absolutely brilliant.
it perfectly walks a fine line between telling the story without actually giving you the information you are looking for. The husband is the narrator and still you can't be quite sure whether he is guilty or not. Just masterfully done for what it is. Of course it kind of drops in the second half, though it's still entertaining.

Someone spoil why the Guest changes for me.

Netflix and Epix are going splitsville.

In a bold move Sunday, Netflix CCO Ted Sarandos published a bulletin on the web site’s official blog announcing that the video-streaming giant would not renew its contract with content provider Epix before it expires at the end of this month, on Monday at midnight. A collaborative effort between Paramount, MGM, and Lionsgate, Epix will take a number of high-profile properties with it when it parts ways with Netflix; the official post names the likes of the Transformers and Hunger Games franchises along with solidly-okay zombie epic World War Z as titles that will vanish from Netflix in two days’time.

The Guest spoilers:

First half: great thriller. Similar to Gone Girl in the sense that it is telling you the story without giving too much away. You aren't sure what the main character's deal is, whether he is good/bad or has an ulterior motive.

Second half: It becomes Friday the 13th/Halloween. Just straight out of a horror movie. Dude is killing everyone and nothing can stop him.

I liked the change. It just became absurd and ridiculous at that point. And the final line in the movie summed it all up.
"What the fuck!?"

Is there any way to see if a movie is about to expire without using 3rd party sites like unogs? Just wondering since it seems quite a lot of stuff just expired over here (and much more is about to leave apparently).

Edit:
Just so no one can say that all I do is complain, here's a presumably incomplete list for September for Canada:
http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2015/08/31/netflix-canada-picks-september-2015_n_8067442.html
Toronto Sun also seems to claim a few other movies are coming to Canada.

Wait, we finally got Blue Mountain State in Germany? I suddenly don't even give a fuck about what we lost anymore.

I've heard it's similar to The Guest in ways, which I enjoyed a lot, so I'm hoping I at least get some mileage out of it even if it's not great.

Truthfully, The Guest has about 10 times better writing than It Follows. There basically is no story in It Follows.
The entire plot is something following people and killing them. There is no resolution whatsoever.
It's not terrible if you're looking to kill 90 minutes watching a movie with horror elements in it but, don't go in expecting much more than that.

^ i hope we also get something from the Japan release. Or that japan gets alot of english subs.

Germany also got the first nine seasons of Supernatural. They're about to lose quite a few shows though (Fringe, Chuck, Life, Taken) and more importantly some good movies.

What? Chuck? Oh man...

I just browsed through Netflix Japan. No English subs, unfortunately.

I don't think this is bad to talk about here (99% certain) since subtitle files are not copyrighted, so I'm going to try my luck as I don't think its any shadier than the VPN/DNS region workaround talk. If it is bad, mod please delete.

Haven't looked at it myself, quite yet, will do so in a bit. But anyway, I'm going to help you out as far as subtitles go.

Get Chrome add-on "Super Netflix".
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/super-netflix/aioencjhbaolepcoappllicjebblphoc?hl=en

Browse the web for subtitle files, I use opensubtitles.org and podnapisi.net but there are others.

The rest is easy to figure out.

I've mostly done this for adding Japanese subtitles for my wife to English speaking movies, but I also did it once for a Japanese movie streamed from Germany that only had German subtitle options to give it English subtitles.

Kind of a bitch for shows I guess since you'd have to keep doing it, but for movies, should work pretty well.

For those interested, unblock-us has already added it, and uNoGs has all its content listed.
Did a cursory check and found what seems a Japanese-exclusive (for now I suppose) Netflix Original titled "Underwear".

I only have vague memories of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, so I decided to check out the collection, and the show doesn't work in a collection because stories in The Land of Make Believe continue in following episodes, so I'll never know whether Prince Tuesday's parents are divorcing or not, or who won the Draw The Neighborhood Contest.

Still, it's a great show for kids. I honestly prefer spending time with Mister Rogers than in the Land of Make Believe.

Anything good in Japan?
All the Indy films, 2001, Paprika, A Beautiful Mind, The Exorcist, The Garden of Words, Appleseed (2004), Lethal Weapon, probably more.

These are actually 2 movies, btw (JL: Flashpoint Paradox being one, JL: War being the other)

Yeah, sorry if I confuse anyone, but when there are movies with the same title, just the subtitle is different, instead of listing it twice, I separate them with a comma.

I.e. Harry Potter and the Golbet of Fire, Prisoners of Azkaban.

Nice!

Only went to the final day of the Fantasy Film Fest so I didn't get to see this one. Looked interesting from the trailer. Gonna watch that this week I think.

I hope Turbo Kid will make it onto Netflix down the line. That film was apparently the most liked at the festival: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nh23-rQUi5U

If you are form the US you can apparently already rent it from Vimeo or iTunes, but no such luck for me.

Aiii

So not worth it
Was hoping (against hope) that Japanese Netflix would have more English subs for Japanese productions, but alas :(

Something interesting on Netflix JPN, is that on the website every title is in Latin alphabet (either translated or romaji), but on the PS3 app they show up translated or in kana/kanji.
At least all the descriptions are fully translated.

Yes, I know, I haven't lived life.
Let me know when you finish the excellent Indy trilogy, so I can witness your hopes and dreams being crushed and obliterated when you watch Kingdom of the Crystal Skull like the rest of us :D
Also do watch 2001 ASAP.

It's a bit random, some have and some don't.
Hell, Knights of Sidonia is Japanese audio only and no subs whatsoever (also not a Netflix Original)
