This is the Vita memory cards all over again. Sony made the right call to go with standard PC SSDs. Sure they're not much cheaper yet but in a couple of years price will come down quite a bit I'd imagine; not sure if the same can be said of these proprietary cards though.

Seagate is price gouging. You can buy a 1 TB 3.5 GBps 980 for just $99. The 2 TB 970 evo plus is $240.

And thats a 3.5 GBps drive. The 2.4 GBps SSDs like the one Seagate is selling is selling for just $186 on Amazon

sata SSDs are affordable. High speed NVMe SSDs are not. HDDs have a speed limit basically and can only increase density whereas SSDs are constantly improving speeds/DRAM sizes, etc. Of course the costs won't be equal

This is actually a positive, I don't think these things are selling well, so in about a year or so we might actually see a few stores get sick of bulked up shelves and get a semi-decent clearance sale on at least the 1TB model.

lol ok yeah i agree being able to buy 3rd party drives is better but you're still buying an SSD and SSD prices are insane. my 2TB SSD cost me £280. i could get one for about £220 now. the cheapest drive is ~4GB/s vs the PS5's 5.5GB/s. if i want to match or exceed PS5 speeds then i'd need to pay £300+. £220 is 62% of the price of a DIGITAL ps5 console.

even if i got a 1TB drive that's £110 or or £149 to match PS5 speeds. that's 31-42% the price of a PS5 discless console.

you said "SSDs are expensive" and that you've been hearing since 2008 they would be affordable. Those SSDs and their technology (SATA) are affordable. If you wanted to specify expensive SSDs being high end NVMe drives you should have done so.

I agree the prices are high, but unlike the vita not every user has to deal with it. Also unlike the vita these cards drop in price all the time, the 1tb was been $179 many times.
