New Board Gaming |OT2| On Tables, Off Topic

Yeah I'm hoping it will be a gateway game for some R&M fans I know who don't necessarily play board games. I think we'll probably stick the the base game which is straight co-op vs the advanced which adds hidden role/ traitor mechanics.

First tragedy, then farce.
It's spreading in here I like that. I genuinely really love that game.

It came at Jon Gilmour's strong recommendation if that makes you feel better.

So far I like it. It's a simple little Gin Rummy derivative game (like TTR).. with the difference being the amazing contraption that causes some really cool spacial thinking. You have to *really* be careful you aren't setting someone else up for an explosion on your turn.

I also like the powers you get from drinking the potions and the set collection bits for the bonus points is pretty novel as well.

Fun game with amazing engineering.

I demoed it and loved it immediately! Arcadia Quest art style? Oh hey what's this. Cool minis? Sweet. Roll dice and spend them to select actions? Oh I like that. Tile based random dungeons? GIVE ME THIS GAME RIGHT NOW.

Apparently it's not shipping to Kickstarter backers until November, they flew a bit via Air and I was able to snag one! No idea when it'll hit retail, hopefully around the same time as it ships to backers. Plenty of game in the base box to keep me going!

Good to know! I'm a KS backer of Masmorra, happy to hear it's fun. And I personally don't mind the limited number of copies at gencon... I'm getting a ton of extra content for my wait.

Anyone have any impressions of Pandánte? I've been thinking about buying the Deluxe second edition.
When I was in the Philippines last week, my wife and I went to a casino, my first time being at one. I know what kind of personality I have and how I handle addictive things, so I refuse to gamble at all. But my wife had a lot of fun placing bets and gambling and I did know already that she likes bingo and playing the lottery. So I started thinking about getting Pandánte. I haven't played my Yomi set, nor have I played my copy of Puzzle Strike, and Codex is still a little ways away from releasing (KS copies may ship as early as two months ahead of time, which was the word last time we got an update), but I do like David Sirlin's design philosophy, his dedication to play testing and balancing.
Pandánte has fantastic components and the cheating/lying mechanic seems fun (the bigger your lie, the more benefit and more cards you can draw). I don't have any experience with anything like it, outside of regular poker (I played a decent amount of friendly Texas Hold Em a decade ago in Tech School and enjoyed it, but I haven't played a game of poker since then). It seems like it would be a good game to play with non-gamers too, people who are familiar with poker but aren't interested in hidden traitors or spies or werewolves (because I have Resistance, Codenames, Spyfall, and One Night Ultimate Werewolf in a stack by the door and have almost brought them to multiple parties or non-gamer get-togethers but then second-guess the audience and assume they wouldn't have any interest in playing any of those). Then again, I haven't played any of those games myself and second-guess my own ability to lie or bluff or be creative on the spot. So maybe it too would sit there in a stack unplayed.
Any advice?

For those who have played Robinson Crusoe, I have a question since I've never played and am looking forward to it.

I saw some strategy advice that said basically each scenario lets the players figure out which 4 out of 24 possible actions are ideal, and to win you basically NEED to do only those 4 actions as much as possible.

To me, this sounds like if you spoil yourself on a scenario, you've almost ruined it for yourself and there isn't much replayability.
And/or, it sounds like a scenario may get boring if you're just doing the same 4 actions.

Does anyone else agree with this, or is there typically more variety even for winning playthroughs?

I got the first edition kind of on a lark just because the set looked nice, and also Puzzle Fighter is a solid game so I had some faith as to the gameplay, but honestly it's just a way fiddlier version of poker. Not very fun to play imo. You might as well get something like Skull instead which distills it down. Pandante just has too many little mechanics that add nothing over regular poker unless I guess you're a Pandante expert maybe.

Maybe I'll hold off for a while then. I do have Skull and Roses: Red, Skull and Roses: Black, and Skull, so maybe I should try to introduce those instead.

I haven't played a lot, but given there is some randomness to the nature of the game, I imagine even if you know the ideal way to play you can still lose.

I personally would just go in blind and work on figuring out how to deal with each scenario.

Anyone ever written their own rule book? I'm finishing up the v0.1 draft of my rule book for my game (gonna play test on Friday for the first time with people). Writing rule books is CRAZY hard. It's something I have a new found respect for.

That's cool that you were able to buy a copy and enjoyed it.
I haven't seen much information about the expansion "The Fifth Ingrediant" outside of a description of it on its BGG page. Did they have it there?

I didn't see it but to be honest I didn't spend much time at the CMON booth.

A scenario really can't be "spoiled" because there are too many random elements in the game for you to really know how one game is gonna go. A scenario will mainly give you a goal and special rules/provisions. It's not a script with surprises, it's more like "this is the challenge this time around".

One part of the game is the set of tools you have available to build (they get randomly dealt from a deck at setup). They're all generally helpful, but you don't have time to build everything - just the things that will help the most.

So, you could try to say there must be an optimum set that will work best for a given scenario, but with so many other things up in the air (the location tiles, the events, wild animals, weather, and all the other hardships being thrown your way) that it seems more like a point of advice about one aspect of the game, not something game-breaking.

Oh, with all that said, I'm not sure what they're changing in the new version of Robinson Crusoe.

from what I know it's going to be mostly the same just with different (in general higher quality) components.

the end result of the changes will make the current expansion for the game not work with the new version, but they will be printing a new version of the current expansion as well.

the bigger thing that sucks for owners of the old version is another expansion will be released that won't work with the original release of the game at all, only the new version of the game.

originally they said that they would try to have a conversion pack, but have since said they won't as they would basically just need to make two copies of the expansion at that point, and it was hard to justify making a version of an expansion for a version of the game they didn't have rights to.

Is this including the two (or more?) extra quests? I thought Kong Island and at least one more were supposed to be included in the new edition without buying anything else, but I guess all details are vague at this point.

not sure about that. last I looked into it was like a month or two ago.

I just know they made it clear that in order to enjoy the second expansion you would need the new version of the game, thus why I haven't bought the old version at all.

Problem guys.

I bought Runebound for my friend, who is a huge Descent fan. I've had it in my closet since April waiting for his bday.

Today while we were talking about Runewars, it came up he wants to buy Runebound.

His birthday is on Sunday. How do I make sure he doesn't buy it before then.

I'd just give it to him now as an early present lol.

Like mercviper said, give it to him early. Say Happy Birthday. Explain that he told you that he wanted to buy the game and to make sure he didn't you wanted to give him the present just a bit earlier (after he opens and discovers what it is).

For some reason, I though there was only going to be one more scenario than in the Z-Man edition, but again my info could be old.

Also, Ignacy did do a Reddit AMA about 9 days ago. Not a whole lot of new info either, but it looks like October may be a bit more likely.

I too am super excited about the new release. I've played the Z-Man version once and think it'll be a hit with my group. Gotta get that and the Shadows of Brimstone deluxe Trederra expansion.

Thanks. Not much info, but I did notice this, with Ignacy responding about the new box art:

I loved the old one. The new one though is my new favorite. I love art of Vincent Dutrait and I asked him personally to do cover for my Robinson. It is a honor for me tho have him onboard for this project.

Masmorra! Did you demo that or anything first? The designer of that is from Brazil, and he was super friendly when he showed us the game a year or two ago. I usually expect the designers to be faking some amount of their enthusiasm by like day 4 of Gencon, but he was so into it. Then we ran into him the last day on the street, and he recognized us and remembered our names. Ended up grabbing food with him. Whole thing kinda blew my mind.

I had no idea the game was out now though. I have to buy it and support the guy.
Is that the CMON dungeon romp with dice action selection? (also using Arcadia Quest theme)? It actually look pretty good and I am thinking late pledge it.

some game called Faeria is free on steam for a limited time.
faeria combines the core values of Strategy Card Games together with a Living Board, giving you the ability to shape the board as you play to create mind-blowing strategies. Each game of Faeria is not only unique, beautiful and fast-paced but also highly competitive with upcoming features such as an observer mode and integrated tournaments.

aka I am not sure what it is but seems to be a board game so figured i would share here and on the digital board game thread.

I personally would have gone with "boy does the new box suck, whoops".

But his answer is a bit more diplomatic.
I mean, he apparently likes the art AND personally loves the artist's work AND asked them to do the cover, so I'm not sure that's diplomatic. It's just honest. :p

Looking for some good iPad board games that work well in solo play. I already have Galaxy Trucker. Thinking of checking out Tsuro

There are tons that are really good and most have AI you can play with. My favorites:

Carcassonne
Ticket to Ride
Patchwork
Castles of Mad King Ludwig
Splendor
Stone Age
Agricola
Twilight Struggle
Tikal
Qwirkle

Are there any that have dedicated campaigns/solo modes changed to better suit solo or is Galaxy Trucker unique in that regard?

Give http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=832942 a go too.

You might check out:

Carcassone - Has a solitaire mode which is reasonably addictive as well as decent AI options.
Castles of Mad King Ludwig - Quite a bit of content, although I think it is the type of game you want to play with people so you can piss them off when you take the piece they need.
Splendor - Lots of single player content in the form of varied win conditions. Well put together app.
Pandemic or Ghost Stories - The very nature of cooperative games lends itself to being played solo and these are two excellent options (Ghost Stories only on ipad).
Hive - It you like your games a little more chess like
Lost Cities - Has a nice progression of people to beat and some light win condition based things to do.

Tsuro? It is very limited from a single player perspective. I think it is a cool game, but there isn't a whole lot to do and it feels completely random against the AI.

Was there any dnd at gencon? Seems like wizardz of the coast is not being forth coming

They said they weren't doing Gencon, as they are trying to go to more cons around the country instead.

Course many think it's because of how Paizo has taken over Gencon pretty much, that WOTC is trying to get the brand out there in other places.

Plus isn't there still salt in the water from when they owned Gencon? When I first started going they had mtg worlds and all kinds of DnD representation. Now it's ghosted.

Wow haha, what a great idea for a promo to do that.

At first I just wanted Fabio to draw my dog Myles on the mat, but then Brad wanted to sign it to so he came up with the idea of doing the card. From there we brainstormed together and because my dog likes to play fetch he did the egg rule.

I might bug him in the future to see if they would add the card officially to a promo pack. Super nice dudes.
