New Board Gaming |OT2| On Tables, Off Topic

To be fair, Pandemic was never something I cared for too much anyway. Mostly kept it around for a newbie friendly game in case the situation called for it. But The Cure is a fun game even without the Pandemic branding.

I really like Pandemic and I am not huge on dice games so The Cure always looked sketchy to me.

Ok the Britannia map for Concordia is great for 2 players. With 3 players it must hell because of how much competition would be happening.

I got a huge lot of D-Day Dice stuff in today, pretty much everything from the Kickstarter minus the messenger bag, which I can buy from Funagain Games. I already had a copy of the base game, the Op Neptune battle maps, and the Op Normandy battle maps, but I figured buying this lot would be the cheapest way to get all of the hard-to-find stuff like the K-Maps and would make things like Atlantikwall a bit cheaper than retail. And if I can offload my base game and battle map expansions that I already had, that will bring the price down a bit too. It is quite an impressive bunch of stuff to behold when spread out over an area. Had I been into board games back when this was on KS, I would have easily pledged for it and been very satisfied with it.

Looking forward to trying it out tomorrow afternoon at work. I think I've got the rules down for the most part, read the manual 3 or 4 times now and watched part of a video earlier (if I hadn't passed out due to the guy's being boring as hell, I would have learned a lot more). I love the look of the battle maps, the design of them and the theme. Truth be told I like the looks of everything that Valley Games had their hands in, but Airborne in your Pocket and Up Front will never see the light of day (someone sold a very awesome PnP of AIYP on BGG recently, it was too cool). It's too bad we won't ever see the D-Day Dice Pacific version/expansion that the box promised, or the other stuff that the project mentioned would be coming out.

I really would like to get Heroes of Normandie, but the amount of errors and the horrible rule book have given me pause. If there was a way to get the stuff that gets fixed on the cheap I would be down, but being told "Just download the new rule book" and that all of the errata for the counters have to be purchased does not sound appealing to me. At least video games that are super-buggy and broken at launch can get a patch issued. This would be like Konami trying to charge to fix Silent Hill HD Collection on 360 or something.

So preordered Dead of Winter, along with Mascarade + Expansion and You suck for the free shipping.
Only played Dead of Winter once, but it's a mix of Eldritch Horror and Shadow over Camelot and I LOVED it. I can see tons of expansions too. Mascarade is a fun game really easy to teach and the expansion seem to add even more crazyness. You suck was really only for the free shipping, since it falls down to 5$ with it. Still, a Trick taking game is somebody that I didnt have in my collection.

$5 each? What size was the mousepad? Did you upload your own art file?

Artscow did a promotion 2-3 years ago where they gave away a free mouse pad for people. I uploaded my file and they gave me a pretty good quality mouse pad with the image on it.
You can really print what you want.

I never heard of this D-Day Dice and it looks interesting. So why the lack of expansion? Is the game not well received?

Fenners got it right:
The publisher is caught up in a whole bunch of legal troubles.
There was a bunch of shady dealings, some problems with Up Front, and a whole mess of other things. There are numerous lengthy threads on BGG and to tell you the truth I can't even follow everything that has happened. This is the biggest thread on the subject I believe: What does this mean for Up Front?
There is quite a bit from the Kickstarter that is available on the market though. The Kickstarter actually offered a tier that not only included everything available at that time but all future D-Day Dice items (so the two future expansions, the Pacific version, and whatever else that was due to come out). It was the Line for Life tier and was set to include 10 future expansions and as many promo items. Of course people who pledged for that are bummed that there won't be anything else, but most people I see talking in reference to their LFL pledge are saying that they are content with what they received, that it was a ton of stuff for $100.
It is a bummer. Looking at Up Front, I can't say I would have been too interested in that. I thought Airborne in your Pocket looked cool the first time I saw it though and it sucked to almost immediately find out that it won't ever see the light of day (outside of PnP).

I played three game of D-Day Dice today at work. The first was on the first battle map, Exercise Tiger, and I made it to the bunker and survived the round to win. Total points=150.
I then moved on to the battle map on the back, Omaha Beach. The first play on that map saw me lose at about 30 mins left, no more men in my squad. The second run on that map saw me win in 45-60 minutes, 148 points total. I hit a ton of Battle Cry RWB bonuses at the top that let me bypass the courage requirements to advance and I was able to instead burn my stocked courage to keep my men alive (using the "Hero" specialist).

That second map was brutal, if it hadn't been for those RWB rolls at the end I would have lost before entering the bunker. Losing 15 and then 20 men (not counting men lost to the MGF roll attached to both of those numbers) almost did me in.

Overall I enjoyed the game a lot. It seems like the potential is there for it to get very tough. I didn't really expect to have difficulties with the second map, considering the first map is designed as a tutorial. But I guess the D-Day landings were brutal; those beaches were fucking meat grinders, designed to have streams of good men fed into them only to be chewed up and spit out. So the difficulty is definitely keeping with the theme. I can imagine that the requirement in multiplayer that every unit reaches the bunker is going to make things tough, but there is a bit of balancing where the bunker's attack is lowered when the other units start entering it. It looks like the German rules from Atlantikwall that see you playing the overlord and activating the hazards will probably be pretty difficult as well.
I know there is a good amount of people out there who hate rolling dice because they don't like randomness. A common thing I have seen said in reviews and something I guess I agree with is that the game may be focused on rolling dice but there is a ton of strategy and planning involved. You aren't going to win if you think the only thing you need is lucky rolls. Balancing how long you can stay in the bottom levels before being forced to advance against what resources you need to be aiming to earn is super-important.

So yeah, I liked it. I'm looking forward to playing some more over the next couple days. It seems like a pretty decent solitaire game, which is something I needed. Between this and Space Hulk: Death Angel, I am in for some challenging-but-fun times at work in the near-future. Recommending it though? I don't know, I certainly can't issue a blanket recommendation. I'm sure there are a lot of Euro fans who would dislike it, or fans of in-depth war games might be disappointed with its lighter weight (and lack of counters to clip). I do plan to move on at some point to heavier war games, but at the moment I am pleased with the space I am in, the space occupied by the likes of Memoir '44 and D-Day Dice. I'm sure there are probably a couple people in here who would like it too, so maybe someone will check it out and enjoy it also.

Up Front... my biggest kickstarter fail for sure. :(
Sorry to bring it up :(

Anyone have experience with Romance of the Nine Empires? I have wanted it for a while and I see it at a price I would be willing to pay for it, but a common thing people have said in reviews is that the game is very complex and hard to learn. My experience with CCGs/LCGs is pretty minimal already but I have even seen people who claim to be very experience with a wide variety of card games say that this game left them feeling very confused.
I shelved Netrunner earlier in the year with the intention of figuring it out at a later time, because I found the rules to be confusing and couldn't grasp how to play (I remember talking about my confusion with it in the last thread). I also have the GoT LCG and LotR LCG on the way here at the moment. Not bringing those up to say "I already have too many games, so I don't know if I should get it" because that wouldn't stop me it all. It's that I have a ton of other card games that are going to give me problems with learning them and is it a good idea to add one that gives experienced people problems?

I mean, right now I have Netrunner, Rune Age plus expansion, LotR LCG, GoT LCG, some Khans of Tarkir and Born of the Gods intro decks, Legend of the Three Kingdoms, four different Marvel Overpower decks, and Blood Bowl Team Manager that all need to be either learned or played for the first time. I suppose I know what I should do and that is wait on it. I just feel like this is a good price and when I do want it later, I'll probably have to pay more.

$5 total for both pads plus shipping. I uploaded the image found here:
http://boardgamegeek.com/filepage/101223/marvel-dice-masters-avengers-vs-x-men-tutorial-pla?

If you google for artscow coupons you'll find some for super cheap mousepads. As for the size, it's just basic mousepad sized. Good for travel and keeping your dice organized, but you'll need to put the cards the on the table.

Thanks for the info.

I've decided that I'm going to design a tarot card "mini mat" for the game (as I already own some big table mats for gaming). I figure that the 'mat' itself only really needs the Reserve & Field areas for dice to sit on, while the dice can sit adjacent to the card mat on one of its four sides, for the Attack/Used/Prep functions. I might even be able to squeeze a life counter on it.

If it works out, it would make a pretty inexpensive, ultra-portable and low-footprint type of playing mat.

Played the cleanest game of Death Angel I've played yet. It was pretty ridiculous.

4 Marine teams, No deaths, with the blip piles working out almost perfectly (one side emptying with the other side mostly untouched). We even went in the last location with zero 'nids following us (door support blew them up) and we faced Broodlords who had no other enemies to hide behind.

I'm looking forward immediately rolling a 0 when Brother Claudio tries to do his thing next game to balance this all out.

Go buy a lotto ticket tonight because the odds seem to be greatly in your favor.

Any suggestions on a Civ type board game? Have a friend in the group who lives the PC games and I want to get him a Christmas gift. Has to be in print or not crazy in price. Thanks!

I didn't think I would like Russian Railroads but I tired it on Yucatan.de and ordered it immediately afterwards. That's now again enough board games. At least until Essen next year. Well I might still get Patchwork. It's Rosenberg and looks like good 2 player fun.

You should probably look at the suggestions Morfeo got on the previous page.

What do you think he likes about Civ games the most?

there's the obvious official Civ board game, for starters? :lol

Through The Ages is really good too and in a similar vein (though it's more of a card game than a board game, really)

If you like the space/beyond earth-ish civ, Eclipse is probably what he'd love, too.

Yeah, the licensed Sid Meier's Civ game is available am quite good.

A couple more civ building games I like: 7 Wonders, Nations, Roll Through the Ages, and Clash of Cultures.

Got my order from CSI...so much games! I think if I took out the insert, Among the Stars can all fit in the Ambassadors box. Now that would be nice and compact!!!

not sure when I'll open Machi Koro but figured I could wait a bit. Same with X-Men Dice Masters...any word on people's reactions this time around?

Played Arkham for the first time in about a year. Still enjoy that game a lot. Fiddly but fun.

Played a six player game of it at work this past week, our second game in a month. Folks were asking for another game of it after it finished... We won, barely, after a funky set of gate openings & card plays. One player was utterly ineffective, basically stuck with low health, and two players dominated monster combat - one player had over 20 points of monster strength by the end of the game. We'd draw a monster, it'd be horrible, he'd take it down. The rest of us focused on gates.

A good time was had by all, mostly. They're ready for an expansion board, I think.

Nice! I would like to try a game with more people. Usually it is just my wife and I each controlling two characters. We won our game today as well, relatively smoothly dealing with a couple rumors. Patrice is a pretty awesome character.

Edit: Speaking of Cthulu, I was thinking of getting into the RPG, but want to wait until the 7th edition which is about to be released to Kickstarter backers.

Played a bit multiplayer and found it quite challenging. I need to try it solo. It would probably be not bad controlling two characters. I should try it solo soon.

Eldritch should be played with 4 players minimum really, and max 6 and that's pushing it. With only 2 players, beating the game become really hard since two bad cards in a row mean that you pretty much lose straight away.
If you solo it, try to do 4 characters in solo.

I've seen a lot of people on BGG say that two is good enough, but soloing with only one is not advisable.

Thanks for the Civ type game suggestions. Gonna look over BGG too. Got home today to find a bunch of parcels waiting for me:

Thunder Alley
Thunderstone Advance: Caverns of Bane
Lost Legends
Axis and Allies Air Force miniatures Starter Set

Also got the two Lost Legends promos/expansions from BGG in an envelope. Glad my wife is away on business this week. Would of got the "I know now you needed to buy more games" speech. lol

Maybe we got unlucky, but after 6 turns of play, we had 4 portals, and all the items were gone due to a rumor. We tried to go for it, but nope.

Got my X-Men Dice Masters set today. This is my first time playing, as the AvX set was woefully sold out everywhere and anywhere. So glad to finally get my hands on the game.

This game is really neat! Even the basic game is pretty enjoyable, and rolling the colorful superhero dice is like playing with candy.

I also got 10 booster packs with the base set. I happened to pull out a super-rare (Scarlet Witch) from one of the packs. Opening these is like a fresh new booster pack high, as getting cards AND dice in one pack is much more exciting than just getting cards alone. Very exciting start!

I saw one of the print on demand expansion Forgotten Souls for Descent. It turn the game into never ending dungeon run without the overlord. I am curious how it play have any of you try it? This might rejuvenate our interest in playing Descent.

Pandemic Cure and Contagion are mine.

Which to play first? Anyone like one over the other?

I'm not a fan of Contagion either. It's like Smash up, but really really light. Pandemic The Cure seem more fun than normal Pandemic to me though. I'm not a fan of Puzzle games like Pandemic. I'm a big big fan of RNG like in Eldritch Horror.

It's supposed to be really good. A lot of people who never liked Descent 2E or were burnt out on 2E have returned to play that. I bought D2E in September and bought Forgotten Souls as well but did not get a chance to play it before leaving the country. Just got my hands on D1E though, so hopefully I can score Road to Legend for a reasonable price at some point.
I'm pretty excited about eventually trying Forgotten Souls. I can't give personal opinions but I have read lots of positive and almost no negative about it. I kind of wish I had not bought Forgotten Souls and instead tried to score the game night kit with it and the printed off rules in it. I would have rather had official components and official rules over having official components and PnP rules.

My exact thoughts on Contagion. It's like Smash Up but not as good. Got a chance to play it at PAX AUS.

In Smash up you can do tons of stuff, and every game is different because of the factions.
In Contagion, every disease is the same, and most people will grow it the same way. There is no real super power and everybody share the same cards. It's pretty meh. I would play Smash up over it every time I think.

I didnt like Contagion very much. The Cure is probably a lot better.

Thanks for the input. We do have Smash Up, which we like. It bums me out that Contagion is even lighter than that. I should've used caution since it didn't have Matt Leacock's name on it, but I still took that chance.

Thanks, everyone.

Sorry haha. I'm sure you can have fun with it, but it's really light. Seem like somebody got told "Do a reverse pandemic, we need to milk to franchise since we cant think of an expansion for Pandemic"

Got Team Manager, 8 Minute Empire Legends and the two Lost Legacy games today. Betrayal at House of the Hill will get here by Friday.

Both Team Manager and 8 Minute Empire Legends should be good with 2p, right? (and Lost Legacy too, obv)

Yeah, I was really disappointed to see that you have to print the rule sheet but I don't think the one that came with game night are any differences, may be on a glossy paper. I find rules are easier kept on tablet anyway so you can have to most recent one along with any FAQ. I would love to have those character play mats. That said, the Kit seems to be quite pricey at least on eBay.

Thank you for all your input and info on the D-Day Dice. I am still on a quest for good solitaire game so I might give that D-Day Dice a try also.

I'm hoping to play BB: Team manager for the first time next week on my day off, after owning the game for the better part of the year. I'm hoping it is good with two people, but I haven't seen anything in the rules or BGG forums to lead me to believe it wouldn't be.

As for Lost Legacy, there are some people in here (Neverfade) who really like it and have a ton of experience with it who should be able to answer that. I played two 2p games of Starship on Monday night and wasn't too keen on it. We had played 4 games of R/BraveRats right before that though, which is a perfect two-player game, so it was a hard act to follow. I didn't know if it was because we were playing 2p and maybe the game shines with more players or if it was because it was our first experience with a deduction-heavy game or what. We are sure to try it again, hopefully with more people. It just didn't seem like we 'got it' though.

It might be just regular glossy paper but I am just really particular about wanting official parts and components that came straight from the manufacturer. Not really sure what is about PnP goods that puts me off, I'm just weird.

I've still only played those three games of D-Day Dice, so no further impressions yet, but no problem. I don't know if I could tell everyone "You need to buy this game now!" because I don't want someone else to be disappointed because of me, but I can at least recommend checking out a video of it. Not really sure where to point you though, because the two videos I watched on BGG in the 'instructional' category literally put me to sleep while watching them.

My new kick I am on is wanting to get a DVG "Leader" game, either Phantom Leader Deluxe, Hornet Leader (w/ Cthulu Expansion), or Thunderbolt Apache Leader. I know Tiger Leader is up on KS and can be bundled with one of those but not sure if a tank game would interest me as much as jets. I've been reading up on all of them and am not really needing someone to talk me into getting a specific one (or all of them), just rambling a bit. I keep scouring eBay hoping to catch a hot deal on one of them. Warfighter just released too from DVG and while I don't like the art too much, I think it looks pretty cool. I guess DVG just puts out a lot of cool games period, even the ones in his catalog that don't have themes that interest me (like U-boats) still look good.

I was hoping that Lost Legacy would be better for 2p than Love Letters, main reason to get it. (that and more variety for >4p). Love Letters is GREAT for a small game, but 2p is just not the same as 3p/4p.

Maybe it is. I'm willing to spend more time with it because we might have not been getting the hang of what we were supposed to be doing. I have Flying Garden up here too, so maybe we will try that one next week instead, since each deck is supposed to do something different I guess. I'll read up on it some more and give it another go; we ended up flipping through the rule book and just jumped in after about two minutes. We were going to try Cypher but that looked like it would take more than a minute to read.

If you want "2p Love Letter" though, you want to get R/BraveRats. Seriously.

EDIT: Changed 'Hanging' Garden to 'Flying' Garden. I'm dumb.
