I never heard of this D-Day Dice and it looks interesting. So why the lack of expansion? Is the game not well received?
Fenners got it right:
The publisher is caught up in a whole bunch of legal troubles.
There was a bunch of shady dealings, some problems with Up Front, and a whole mess of other things. There are numerous lengthy threads on BGG and to tell you the truth I can't even follow everything that has happened. This is the biggest thread on the subject I believe:
What does this mean for Up Front?
There is quite a bit from the Kickstarter that is available on the market though. The Kickstarter actually offered a tier that not only included everything available at that time but all future D-Day Dice items (so the two future expansions, the Pacific version, and whatever else that was due to come out). It was the Line for Life tier and was set to include 10 future expansions and as many promo items. Of course people who pledged for that are bummed that there won't be anything else, but most people I see talking in reference to their LFL pledge are saying that they are content with what they received, that it was a ton of stuff for $100.
It is a bummer. Looking at Up Front, I can't say I would have been too interested in that. I thought Airborne in your Pocket looked cool the first time I saw it though and it sucked to almost immediately find out that it won't ever see the light of day (outside of PnP).
I played three game of D-Day Dice today at work. The first was on the first battle map, Exercise Tiger, and I made it to the bunker and survived the round to win. Total points=150.
I then moved on to the battle map on the back, Omaha Beach. The first play on that map saw me lose at about 30 mins left, no more men in my squad. The second run on that map saw me win in 45-60 minutes, 148 points total. I hit a ton of Battle Cry RWB bonuses at the top that let me bypass the courage requirements to advance and I was able to instead burn my stocked courage to keep my men alive (using the "Hero" specialist).
That second map was brutal, if it hadn't been for those RWB rolls at the end I would have lost before entering the bunker. Losing 15 and then 20 men (not counting men lost to the MGF roll attached to both of those numbers) almost did me in.
Overall I enjoyed the game a lot. It seems like the potential is there for it to get very tough. I didn't really expect to have difficulties with the second map, considering the first map is designed as a tutorial. But I guess the D-Day landings were brutal; those beaches were fucking meat grinders, designed to have streams of good men fed into them only to be chewed up and spit out. So the difficulty is definitely keeping with the theme. I can imagine that the requirement in multiplayer that every unit reaches the bunker is going to make things tough, but there is a bit of balancing where the bunker's attack is lowered when the other units start entering it. It looks like the German rules from Atlantikwall that see you playing the overlord and activating the hazards will probably be pretty difficult as well.
I know there is a good amount of people out there who hate rolling dice because they don't like randomness. A common thing I have seen said in reviews and something I guess I agree with is that the game may be focused on rolling dice but there is a ton of strategy and planning involved. You aren't going to win if you think the only thing you need is lucky rolls. Balancing how long you can stay in the bottom levels before being forced to advance against what resources you need to be aiming to earn is super-important.
So yeah, I liked it. I'm looking forward to playing some more over the next couple days. It seems like a pretty decent solitaire game, which is something I needed. Between this and Space Hulk: Death Angel, I am in for some challenging-but-fun times at work in the near-future. Recommending it though? I don't know, I certainly can't issue a blanket recommendation. I'm sure there are a lot of Euro fans who would dislike it, or fans of in-depth war games might be disappointed with its lighter weight (and lack of counters to clip). I do plan to move on at some point to heavier war games, but at the moment I am pleased with the space I am in, the space occupied by the likes of Memoir '44 and D-Day Dice. I'm sure there are probably a couple people in here who would like it too, so maybe someone will check it out and enjoy it also.
