New Deftones single - Ohms!

On 3rd and 4th listens, I can't believe I didn't notice how much heavy keyboard there is now on large parts of the album, constantly. It's all so smoothly blended together that it just compliments and doesn't cut and stand out.

The 2nd heavy part just has high pitched lines held throughout. Then the chorus has a huge keyboard part I honestly didn't even notice, and thought it was just all guitar at first. The way he shifts it and drops on the chorus keyboard part is sickkkkkk.

I saw a local band in Beaumont Texas years ago that was basically a carbon copy of Deftones. Same sounding music and vocal stylings. I wonder if they hit the big time with that? lol

Back in the late 90s I was in love with Deftones Around the Fur. Yet I could not get into their earlier work and ignored any of their new work. Then I read an article in Revolver on them recently and decided to give them another try. I am still collecting their albums, but White Pony is ok. Around the fur is just awesome. Every single song. Hoping one of their newer albums sounds anything like Around the Fur.

You on that Black Stallion tip yet?

Amazingly ambient! I love Purity Ring and they do remixes exceptionally well.

It would be interesting to hear Com Truise do another Deftones remix this time around, I loved what he did with Prayers/Triangles after Gore was released.

I'm also interested in hearing the Robert Smith thing that was shown in the Black Stallion trailer. That is the most hype for me. The Cure x Deftones = BLISSSSS

Ohms is incredible. These guys just get better and better as time goes on. I've been a huge fan since I picked up Adrenaline on the advice of a musician friend in an actual music store in 95 :messenger_tears_of_joy:

On nu-metal: they were right to reject the label because their music predated it by a lot and I never connected them with it even though I listened to that stuff as well. I was genuinely surprised and annoyed when I read articles calling them nu-metal even back then. They shared some of the elements early on, sure, but then you listen to Around the Fur, which was released in 1997. White Pony was out in 2000 while Limp Bizkit was singing about sticking cookies up your "yeah". So I emphatically reject that label too.

I love the deftones.. haven't listened to anything newer than white pony, though.. their initial spark kinda got diluted after that, i thought..

Really not the case. You should check it out slowly, and not blow through it all. It's definitely worth a listen. White Pony was a peak for the band of course, but every album is worth listening to and putting effort into understanding.

There were a huge part of my early teens, i moved directly into tool from the last track of White Pony as you'll know :p (second last track in some locations, i believe?) They also eventually got me into Radiohead and Mogwai. Great band. Anyway I'll give it a listen when i feel the itch.

I oughtta love Mogwai

Vocals achieve super saiyan 90s - 2000s transition. Fine, we're going in. Listen to this shit and hear it.

I've seen live since the first album. He literally blew out his vocal chords singing it as honestly as he could on Adrenaline and Around the Fur. As you can hear, he hits it 100% on albums on on the beginning of tours. If he tours for a few months on end, his voice gets wrecked. But it's still there and real in studios. I flew to San Diego to see them in 2019 at the Deftones Day of the Dead Festival and believe me they do it all for real. Chino just can't do it for 12 months without blowing out his voice. Check them out at the first half of their tours and they're crushing it in 2020. San diego has an annual tour just for them.

They've got a range of sounds, they're definitely their own beast..

My favourite albums is "Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will", but most people would say their best is their debut, "Young Team" (i love Young Team too).

They went through a period in the early 00s where they were a tad pop'y, but those songs were still really good in their own way. Their most recent album, Every Country's Sun, sounds very contemporary, but has some great Mogwai touchstone features that give it extra power.

They made a live album called "Government Commissions", with amazing remixes of some of their best songs, i would almost recommend it as the first album anyone would listen to. Superheroes of BMX is a personal favourite, though others would probably put it below two or three other tracks from that album.

Finally, a shout out for Rave Tapes. It isn't quite as consistent as Hardcore, but it has arguably the greatest opening track they've made this century, and in Remurdered they repeated the hype alchemy of Rano Pano from Hardcore.

Here are some choice tracks. They don't represent anywhere near everything Mogwai does, they skip most of their middle years, so to speak, which are full of awesome tracks. It's all just my opinion too~

Note: a word on song structure, i personally am obsessed with the way they layer up tracks and with variations on a theme. They also ruin drumsets like Lovecraftian titans.

God Mode:

Note: this song is a marathon, but what a payoff~~

This is probably my favourite Mogwai track, if i had a gun to my head. Makes me feel like i can win life~

Live:

** This girl was asked to play with them for, like, a tour or something when their drummer got sick.. and I'm just totally blown away with her lol.. see how she handles Mogwai Fear Satan, it looks like a real feat:

Solid Gold:

** Featuring Rocky Erickson of the 13th Floor Elevators

Hype:

Media limit.. To be continued..

For all i know you know this better than me, but if you like Siamese Dream, you'll love Loveless by My Bloody Valentine.. it might take a couple of listens for it to really click but it is a masterpiece of shoegaze.. Sometimes is epiiiiiic. Redefines romance lol.. wonder if that's the best way to talk it up.. you might say it's their Mayonaise

Loved all three man, definitely a good source of shoe if i need it.. particularly liked the Drop Ninteens track.. the spoken part at the back reminded me of a Belle and Sebastian effort, funnily enough.. what was that song they did.. nvm, can't remember it, but on some of their rarer tracks they get a really cool effect going, another band with a drummer who is happy to get nutty

Idk anything about Belle and Sebastian
They're from a happier time in my teen years lol, they're totally different. Just a few of their rare tracks get a sort of, wall of sound effect going and get rolling. I wouldn't recommend any in this thread :p

As long as he smoke joints and turn that into inspiration for his phat riffs I don't care about what he thinks.

Also, what is a covid truther? I'm trying to keep up with these terms but it's getting hard lol

That guy gets so high that I'm wasted just watching him. He's a total goofball, and seems like one of the most laid back people ever. Check out some of his podcast appearances. I dont think anyone takes this very seriously.

Ohms may honestly be their best album. I feel like the honey moon period is over, and it fucking slaps so hard still just the perfect balance of everything the band is known for and still feels so fresh overall. I havent stopped listening since release. I forget how much I can enjoy music until I hear Deftones again. They're the best man

Agreed. So many fans are still stuck on White Pony after two decades, but I feel like they just get better and better with each album.

White Pony was a turning point ultimately. Their output since has just showed so much maturity as a band, but theres a clear difference between post and pre White Pony era Deftones. Its sorta the stop gap between the bands overall shift in songwriting maturity

My top 3 is Ohms, Diamond Eyes and Self Titled; Koi no Yokan and Saturday Night Wrist are no slouches either, and Gore is underrated by fans

Album is AOTY (maybe of the last 3 for me)

Deftones are my top 3 or 4 band of all time for me.
Deftones, Tool, The Mars Volta/At the Drive In, Nine Inch Nails, and LeButcherettes.

But Tool, to me, put out a subpar record with 10k Days, and a boring ass stinker with Fear (as I said, imo.) Fear will be remembered like a fart in the wind just like Eat the Elephant was for APC.
Maynard helping friends via his Cult of Personality 'OGT Gen-X'ers' will pay for.
Dude just wants to make wine, stay in AZ and make Puscifer shit. He has phoned it in since 2006. At this point Tool is Danny/Adam/Justin Ft: Maynard. He just helps them put by making an appearance so the albums sell and they can slang $500 tickets and merch.
Dude leaves the building once the last song is played and doesn't even attend meet and greets.
Every Tool fan site/page is basically 40 year olds 'swinging on a spiral' or 'Arizona Bay' meme'ing/lyric posting and nobody is 'Monkey Killing Monkey' 'Weapon out and Belly In' or 'Bless this Immunity' meme/lyric posting...

The Mars Volta is defunct. Cedric has wasted the last few years obsessed with Scientology. Juan has brain damage. Ikey is dead...etc..

Nine Inch Nails... I dont know, 2005/07 the With Teeth/Year Zero days is where my love starts to taper off. Fragile and Downward Spiral will always be 10/10 albums tho.

LeButcherettes are still kinda fresh but have been trending towards a more pop feel and I worry their output won't be as good as previous records going forward.

Honestly, right now, #1 is Deftones.

Most consistent band to come out the 90's and deliver albums post-2000 I would say are, at minimum, 8/10. With KNY and Ohms being solid 10/10. All killer, no filler hits from start to finish.
Adrenaline and Around the Fur are solid albums, straight FIRE in the 90's but a little much for me now at 42 lol
While a Deftones 'mix/shuffle' really means "Play all"... I find myself hitting skip on Adrenaline/AtF songs more often then not.
Don't get me wrong... Lifter...holy fuck, that shit gets max volume when it comes on. And on more then a few occasions I let Bored, Root, 7 Words, Lhbia or Head-Up knock...when I'm feeling feisty.
Be Quiet, like Change depends also how I'm feeling. Both songs have been the 'go to' Deftones tracks for radio or fair weather fan so by now I have them forever etched into my brain and can do without.
Chino is the master of the melody, Steph while tlnot technically gifted is the master of the tone+riff, Abe is all about...the groove.. Sergio has been one hell of a replacement for Chi (RIP) and Frank fills those little cracks with shapes and sounds to make it all fit.
5 guys, 5 distinct styles, who shouldn't 'work' but do.

But yeah, consistency, evolution, honest to God CARING about the music, the fans, etc.. Deftones are unrivaled if your a fan of bands you can't pigeon hole into a genre. Dark, sexy, electronic, heavy, ambiance... you can go full Kyle and punch a hole in the wall on track one, and track two make sweet love to your lady... Hell, some Deftones tracks you could do both lol (don't punch your lady tho)

"I have patience now, for expectations wow"
😎
