Majin Uub is in GT for like 3 minutes.

Seriously, Uub probably has more screentime in his fight with Goku at the end of Z than the entirety of GT.

Edit: While the placement wasn't the greatest (no subtlety whatsoever), the Bruce Faulconer soundtrack is straight SWAG.

I go back and forth on Faulconer but I certainly do like it.

For Kai, I definitely preferred Yamamoto to Kikuchi though. The original DBZ must have had some terrible music if it had to use that stuff. I don't know how anyone could prefer it to Faulconer either, except for some vague feeling of "whimsy" maybe.

Super 17 is the worst part of GT though.

No, that was Goatee Vegeta.

Hell Fighter 17 was neat because it actually built on DBZ and the some of the characters (namely, 18.) The rest of GT was just a big middle finger to any kind of character development from Z (like that aforementioned Majin Uub example.)

I don't remember much of it though, but I thought it channeled DBZ a lot better than the Baby crap.

For the most part, I agree with where you're coming from. I don't think the fight with Nappa would have been so brutal if Toriyama didn't plan for the story to continue in some capacity. I see the "Vegeta was the last boss" as more of a theory of why the power levels started getting as crazy as they did.

That Ending guide has a theory that the new editor Yū Kondō came on partway through the Saiyin saga and pushed for change, which lead to the addition of Freeza.

That I can believe, especially as Yū Kondō's watch produced what is pretty universally considered the best of Dragonball Z: Freeza and Cell sagas.

I think this editor Yu pushed Toriyama to be more serious. Note how the Freeza Saga and the Cell saga gradually become more serious until Cell has no humor at all? 16 is still the ONLY hero to die tragically and never return.

Then Yu left, and what a surprise, Toriyama quickly reverts back to pre-Yu levels of the original Dragonball's humor with Peter Parker's highschool hijinks, and boys with no eyebrows headbutting a candy-eating baby-villain.

I like the Black Star GT storyline the best. The execution is wonky, but the idea of overusing the Dragon Balls creating a negative energy was pretty cool.

I actually really like GT's score. It's very late 90s Japanese, but I like it.

Could have sworn I read an announcement for the sequel like a year after the original came out. Maybe not. But Evo only made 60 mil worldwide???? LOOOOOOL

The movie only existed due to the writer's strike and was pretty much dumped onto this world with no push. Fox was pretty scummy about it too, telling the cast it was going to be a summer tent pole with a $100 million globe trotting budget. Instead they got $30 million and went to Mexico.

Not really suprising isn't it though.

To make a succesful DB movie they didn't need to do much. Goku, Super Saiyan, Freeza or Cell, add some cool special effects, end with a mega-Kamehameha: Make millions and millions and millions all over over the world.

Still suprises me they managed to f it up so badly. Really weird.

That's a Dragon Ball Z movie you're describing. What they made was actually a Dragon Ball movie. That film has to be looked at that way but many faulted it, from reading a lot of discussions on it, for not being what they wanted it to be.

I thought DBE was a pretty fun movie. Not really any good of a movie, but far better than the hate it gets.

Wasn't that either.

But DBZ does not exist really, only Dragon Ball. If you want to make a succesful movie, you need to base it on the most popular part of the manga. It's supposed to be succesful right? Draw people in by golden hair and mega-explosions.

Which just shows how little they actually understood the fandom or the reason why it was popular.

It'd be like looking at the Final Fantasy franchise to make a movie and the director going "Well, let's start with FF1, that's the first one and that's GOT to be the one the fans clamor for, right?"

And then he is lynched by a mob of Sephy fangirls at the premier.

That's one of the worst examples ever. There's no benefit other than e-credit to purposely adapt the first Final Fantasy over one of the more popular sequels. The characters, universes, and storys are not connected what so ever. This is far from the case in Dragon Ball. You were supposed to see Goku start off from the loser dweeb and eventually become savior of the galaxy. Besides, an adaptation of Z likely would've netted a worse film, and wouldn't have given me such classics as "Cheese and rice I've scorched my nads!" as well as foreshadowing to Bulma's eventual romance for Vegeta.

Except that this was never Dragonball's story. He was an illiterate country bumpkin with a simple, honest, almost childish view of life that NEVER changes, even in the final chapter.

He's not Peter Parker, high school nerd who becomes a superhero. Dragonball Z maintains his simple, carefree attitude as he still lives in a remote farm while Chi-Chi.

So no, adapting Dragonball was not the smart decision at all. Fans wanted Vegeta and Super Saiyins, not Yamcha and Demon King Piccolo.

My example is perfectly right. If they made an FF film, they'd be INSANE to choose the early material of FF1 versus what the fans want, Cloud and Sephiroth and big acrobatic swordfights.

You can like the film all you want, that's your prerogative, but you cannot pretend Dragonball was not what the fans wanted, they wanted Dragonball Z fights, and that's why it failed miserably.

Maybe Dragon Ball Z fans whose only exposure to the franchise is via Funimation's awful dub on Toonami, but as a fan of Dragon Ball I was pretty appreciative of the fact they started at the root with their version.

You can strawman the DBZ fans all you want, but that doesn't change the fact it failed to capture anyone's attention towards the original Dragonball (which it barely resembled anyways) and it was a poor choice to not give the majority fandom what they wanted.

It's clear it wasn't what some fans wanted. However that doesn't make it a horrible film, the worse thing to ever be made, it ruined childhoods or some other over the top reaction people have had in regard to the film. Dragon Ball in terms of content (from child Goku to King Piccolo and maybe Piccolo Jr) is actually more adaptable then the Dragon Ball Z era of the story. To pull off Vegeta onward would take a budget no one in their right mind would greenlight. No one that put any thought into the situation should have expected that. Or should have even wanted that. A lot of the stuff in the DBZ arcs are so off the wall insane that even in animation I have to face palm at times. I did to a degree as a child and I certainly do now when I rewatch the show even though I still enjoy it.

Who are the majority of Dragon Ball fans according to you Jaxword? It's certainly not the Japanese since the first anime series had higher ratings than Z.

That movie's failure to strike money at the box office has little to do with it being an adaptation of the earlier portion of the story. If it was Z, and had a bigger budget to accommodate it, but still suffered through the reshoots, lack of marketing, and only being made to fulfill contracts it probably would've only done marginally better percentage wise. I'm sure a lot of people went into DBE expecting Z and didn't get that, but if it was a good enough movie I don't think that would've mattered.

Dragon Ball was as good as it got, really. The Vegeta saga and the Frieza saga in Z were decent enough, and even Cell wasn't too bad, but Buu was horrendous and I refuse to acknowledge the existence of GT.

Just let it die already. Or do a Dragon Ball movie and pretend Z never happened. I was way more interested when it was very character driven and more about martial arts rather than power levels and saving the world from space monkeys and pink marshmallows.

I have a new idea for a reboot. It's the same as before, but Chichi gets killed for being annoying so that Gohan can live up to his potential. And he also gets to actually do something when he gets his Mystic power.

I've always been partial to Cell's theme

When people mention Faulconer, that theme starts playing in my head. It might not be the best, but I love that theme.

Black Star was the first GT saga, where Pilaf and friends somehow fly up to the lookout and get hold of super powerful dragon balls that no one remembers existing (including Popo, Kami, and Dende, who all live(d) there but apparently don't look around). What you're thinking of is the Shadow Dragon saga.
