New Dragon's Dogma Preview

A previewer way back played an old build of the game and commented that the combat was weighty...much more akin to a "Souls" game than anything else.

This has been on my radar for awhile, and Im most likely picking it up.

Im just too much of a sucker for RPG's.

Day one if you can turn off the HUD just like in Demon's/Dark Souls, because that's the only way I can play those games anymore, the level of immersion is great.

But since it's Capcom, I'm guessing that won't be an option, so I'll probably wait for a while.

Potions are not free and dying often is not fun.
Skyrim sold a lot better than dark souls. It's a fact. People like skyrim but not dark souls

People like Dark Souls. If it was easier I'd imagine less people would like Dark Souls. Skyrim and Dark Souls are different games aiming to do different things, I doubt people bought Skyrim just because it's an easier game.

More games should let you change your character's height and weight and have them actually affect gameplay. This is going to be so awesome. I want an awesome fat knight as my main pawn.

You can switch off the HUD. It was confirmed in the 2hour stream from a while back.

Yeah, this game features one of the best character creators I have seen. It is going to be fun to be able to create characters that not only look drastically different, but even move differently in ways that affect the gameplay, depending on weight, posture and so forth.

Capcom seems like the only JP dev trying these days with graphics, while the art is generic western fantasy the tech looks REALLY impressive.

Getting hyped for this after watching that ign video preview.

Well that is fantastic.

I assumed it wouldn't be an option since Capcom games tend to have a lot of on-screen clutter that can't be turned off, but I'm glad to know it's possible in this one, thanks for the answer.

Im keeping my eye on this game, but not really hyped about it yet. This is coming from someone for whom the Souls series is the best thing to come out of this generation.

I dunno, I hope it turns out well, but the footage I've seen seems to be lacking... something. Maybe here are some reasons:

-The animation is choppy and unnatural a lot of the time imo

-The open world looks too open.. it basically comes across as a giant open field with monsters at preset places.

-The art style is bland and generic along with the atmosphere, and the graphics aren't very impressive (e.g. bad textures in many places).

-The combat doesn't look like it has the weight or subtle distance game of the Souls games.

That said, the combat does look like it has good variety and some interesting ideas. I really hope I'm wrong and the game is great..

It doesn't, but why should it? Souls combat is great but I think DD combat looks fun in it's own way. A lot faster and less 'natural' maybe, but nothing wrong with that.

I agree, I hope the world isn't big for the sake of being big and there's plenty of content scatter around to encourage exploration.

your analogy sucks like your user id. darksouls is like your analogy.terriable.

Are you just trolling? My point was that your post had at least 1 logical fallacy and 0 valid points.

You're totally entitled to your opinion of Dark Souls. You don't need to justify it by saying "People" agree with you. You're wrong to assume some great mass of humanity harbors any opinion you want them to have based on some completely arbitrary statistic. The only thing that sales prove is that fewer people bought Dark Souls at release. The reasons for this are as varied as the individuals. I could say that based on those unit numbers, it's possible that everyone who bought Dark Souls must have also bought Skyrim, and it'd be just as likely to be true as your assumption. Certainly, you would represent an instant example to disprove this assumption, as would the fact that I purchased Skyrim, have not yet purchased Dark Souls, but love both disproves yours.

This sounds amazing.

The Pawn system is sounding pretty interesting. It would be really nice if I could play online with other people, though. Not just their Pawns. However, I might really like it, so I'll pick this game up on the first day if possible.

Dark Souls is many things, but with the exception of a couple of the penultimate areas, cheap is not one of them.

I fucking love those character creator shit in games, even with a limited creator I could spend hours in them :lol

I'm going to be making pawns all day

I think one of the best bits of news I heard was, apparently you can change your class. That's rather awesome.

Some awesome, well thought arguments here. Very insightful.

Glad I'm not the only one who thinks this, I was pretty baffled in some other threads where people were saying it had some of the best animations they'd ever seen...

The animations and attacks are still pretty good compare to a lot of the open world action games, considering the quantity of moves there are, but yeah, it's rough around the edges.

It's not smooth interms of collisions and enemies feedbacks, it's also a lot worse in the earlier videos where you could see the character having trouble grabbing onto the boss, among other things, it has gotten better but could still see some of the stiffness.

A* post. Will read again.

Someone clearly couldn't beat the Capra Demon.

What I hope they get out of souls games are unique boss designs, since they have cross over equipments from Berserk, I'm hoping to see creepy enemies designs that resembles the ones in that series also, I want to fight more different types of mythological creatures and demons!

I would also like to fight small human bosses of different classes, etc. They've so far only shown the same 4 bosses over and over.

Hahahahahaha. Oh man.

The burg was quite tough, huh? When you develop your character and skills in the process, it gets better.

This person sounds like they may be 12 years old. Not sure. I mean equating game sales to what game is better is silly enough. Surely (insert crappy pop band here) isn't better than (insert less popular but more talented act here). This analogy is old as shit, why oblivious to it?

I basically agree with every single point. I'm still not feeling this game tbh. It looks like a weird midpoint between hack&slash spammy combat and hard, slow, unforgiving combat. The character creator looks cool though.

gave away the keys to the kingdom.
They've mentioned how big the map is several times in various articles, and they do it in this one as well.

"As the world of Dragon’s Dogma is absolutely massive, you will need to find specific locations, key items and NPCs to complete quests, which can potentially take you hours of exploration to find."

And they've said that you can go anywhere you want, if it exists in the world obviously. A developer (One of the main developers.) said it would take 2+ hours to cross the entire world, which sounds extreme for a game of this type -- but why haven't they shown off any maps, stuff you can do in the world or with the world?

The way the game has been portrayed thus far makes it seem like a very, very single minded game with (Basically) nothing to do except run around the world and engage in fights, which would get boring extremely quickly. An open world game like this obviously needs a lot of different mechanics/content/stuff to do to work, and I find it slightly weird that they haven't shown off anything like that.

That sounds... high. Skyrim's world isn't the largest, sure, but it is big for a modern open-world RPG, and completing an end-to-end journey takes, what, around half an hour? A sense of place is one thing I doubt when a developer begins touting the size of a game's open world. Bethesda got this more or less right with Skyrim, actually; no matter where you're going, there's always something marked on your compass, off in the not-too-distant horizon.

I'm going to put aside the danger of trying to hype this up as the next Dark Souls, and just say Capcom is slowly managing to convince me this might be a decent game. So they're doing something right.

This has certainly been more a hype rollercoaster than a hype train for me. Getting some more concrete info and videos has been nice. Going seemingly 1-2 months with nothing but a screenshot of a cyclops certainly wasn't doing it any favors. Now I'm enthusiastic again.

I got grudge sucked!
Game looks like a mix between Dark Souls and the old Capcom D&D games from the 90's, that the impression I got and I'm sure thats what they were going for. I'll definitely buy day 1

The more games look like Demon's/Dark Souls, the better. There's nothing wrong and no shame imitating the game with the best gameplay. Gameplay must be the first and most important factor. I can't give a fuck about games with expansive world if the gameplay is shallow and boring, it'll bore me to death

Like many have said, from the videos I don't really see any resemblance to De/DaS in the combat... Doesn't seem to be any weight, and more importantly, stamina expenditure to it.

Stamina conservation = strategic combat > mash A to win.

Stamina does play a major role in this game. That even goes into your character creation. If you make a heavier character then it'll take him/her longer to regain stamina.

I hear you. For the record, the only feasible comparison I can see is the Pawn system. Which is just a progression of the message system in the Souls series. As the article points out, they very much drew inspiration from that, but simply took it a step further. Other than that, though, I think it is very much it's own game. I am not even expecting it to be some huge hit, either. I just know it is hitting all the right notes for me.

Hmm? I'm pretty sure Itsuno said you could toggle the HUD in the last stream.

So Dark Souls with a dash of Monster Hunter?

I'm not seeing the Monster Hunter.

I think it's just that individual article that's trying to hype it as "the next dark souls", I could be wrong, but I think the core is really Oblivion with a decent and flexible combat system, all the interviews mention that they were heavily inspired by oblivion, and other open world games in the west. So yeah probably better not to think it would resembles the souls games too much outside of the pawn system.

I think a lot of the connection they're seeing is in difficulty. I think it's kind of silly to associate two games with each other purely because they're both difficult.

i'm looking forward to this. i'm a big sucker for open world games and even a bigger sucker for customization characters.

i was just checking out the website and saw the different classes and videos of their attacks. the combat looks fun and interesting for all classes. looking forward to the rest of the character classes as there's no info on them. i'm especially interested in the assassin class.

I was set on the fighter as my first class, but after watching the stream I am leaning towards the mystic archer now. The mechanics of that class look really cool, and I loved how his bow didn't even have a string or arrows. He makes his string and arrows out of fucking magic.

Yeah, Mystic Archer is cool, but don't forget that you can't start as one.

It's the second time I've entered this thread thinking that it's about Dragon's Crown... Damn.

As for DD, I'm really curious how it turns out. Too bad there's no online mp, aside from the Pawn thing, but who knows, maybe it's for the best.

I'm probably going to do Strider. Esnare + quick combos + range sounds like fun, I think it's the best character to climb around too, and you could attack aerial enemies.

I have a feeling using mages will miss out on a lot of fun, but then I don't know what spells are available in the game. I remember reading the ign preview and they said they got their ass kicked because they're trying to beat a cyclops by climbing and meleeing it...

Question- Can you switch your class mid-game? For example, you start as a warrior but after you unlock new classes can you choose them? Or do you have to beat the game in full with one class before you choose another?

Yeah, it's been confirmed that you could switch classes, I don't know the details though.

While I think most of the Monster Hunter comparisons are being drawn due to the large boss monsters you can fight together with your pawns, the one aspect I'm hoping to see from MH is the item customization, crafting, and variety.

All the characters have looked quite bland so far, and that's alright. I get the vibe they're going for.

Yet for a game that's going to be so huge and grandiose, I sure would love to see some neat looking items show up as the game progresses. I want tricked out armor and magical weapons!

Otherwise I'm just going to have to settle for hurling wildlife and pedestrians at whatever threats I may face.

Has there been any word on whether we can attack our own pawns? Can I go do some parkour with my buddy and then kick him off the roof for cramping my style? Will he even be able to make some of those jumps if he's a big overweight slob in heavy armor? I can't wait to find out!

Anyone play AC:Rev? There's a part where you travel to a new location and on the coast, it has a very grey, gloomy look to it. Even Ezio is wearing a long, grey cape and hood. It feels like a more fantasy setting, especially that of Dragon's Dogma. Can't wait.

I really love the look of this game. As far as the Demon/Dark Souls comparison goes, the atmosphere and feel of the game is the reasons I love it, not necessarily the difficulty. DD seems to have nailed it as well.

I'm totally with you. I also liked how it was in the first area. I'm a sucker for the subdued grey look.
